Can Online Dating Burnout Be Stopped?

Posted on June 30, 2022

Online dating burnoutBBC – "Decision fatigue", also called "dating app burnout" is a prevalent phenomenon in the app-based dating world. People grow tired of the endless scroll of potential dates. A recent Badoo survey showed more than three-quarters of singles felt burnt out by unrewarding interactions and inappropriate matches from platforms and apps. Hinge also found that 61% of users were overwhelmed by the dating process, which sometimes feels like "a second job". The design of dating apps can also create frustrations for burnt-out users. Many useful features are behind a paywall. It's also tricky to navigate multiple dating apps at once. Hopping between different interfaces can cause problems. Bumble's relationship expert Caroline West suggests approaching dating apps with more intention and to focus on quality over quantity. Bumble has a feature allowing fatigued users to "snooze" their activity so they can take a break and alert matches that they're doing so. For some people, a dating pause is exactly what they need.

Whitney Wolfe: “My Goal Has Been Undermined”

Posted on June 27, 2022

Bumble Whitney Wolfe HerdFORTUNE – Whitney Wolfe Herd founded the Bumble dating app so women can live 'healthier and more equitable lives.' She says the Supreme Court just undermined that goal dramatically. The U.S. Supreme Court officially overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that guaranteed federal abortion rights on Friday. "When your ability to choose if, when, and how to have children is taken away, so is your bodily autonomy," Wolfe Herd said. "Reproductive rights are human rights." Sheryl Sandberg, the former CEO of Meta (Facebook), also spoke out on Friday. "This is a huge setback. For ourselves, our daughters, and every generation that follows, we must keep up the fight. Together, we must protect and expand abortion access."

What if There Were One Less Thing to Worry About Online?

Posted on June 14, 2022

Bumble Payton IhemeNEW YORK TIMES – Payton Iheme, the head of public policy for Bumble, is working to advance legislation that penalizes "cyberflashing," or the act of sending unwanted sexual images.Payton Iheme's wide-ranging career has taken her from collecting intelligence in the Army to advising the White House on science and technology. As Bumble's head of public policy, Ms. Iheme has found a cause that synthesizes her past experiences. A YouGov poll in Britain found that 40% of millennial women have received an unsolicited photo of male genitalia. Working with Bumble, Virginia recently passed a law that entitles a recipient of an unwanted lewd image to $500 in damages. In Wisconsin, State Senator Melissa Agard, a Democrat, worked with Bumble to introduce an anti-cyberflashing bill in January. It was not voted on in this session, but she said she will push the bill again in January. Bumble began pushing for anti-cyberflashing legislation in 2019 in Texas. With each state that Bumble enters, Ms. Iheme and her team have to reintroduce the concept of cyberflashing, explain what it means, find stakeholders to partner with and figure out how to frame the legislation for the local voters. Nima Elmi, who oversees public policy for Bumble in Europe, said that the United States poses particular challenges to getting laws passed.

The Teens Slipping Through the Cracks on Dating Apps

Posted on June 8, 2022

Online dating trapTHE ATLANTIC – Most dating apps mandate that users be at least 18 to join. When signing up, users must provide their birthday or link a social-media profile that includes their date of birth. But they are not required to provide any proof of their age. A representative for Bumble shared that the company uses "automated and live verification procedures" to block users under 18 and prevent them from rejoining. Match Group said that the company uses "technology including AI" to search for suspicious language "that indicates a user may be underage". The GBH News Center for Investigative Reporting found that from 2015 to 2021, ~100 men were charged in the US with crimes related to sexually assaulting minors or attempting to engage in a sexual act with a minor through Grindr. Governments have started to take notice of reports like these.

The Obstacles of Non-binary Dating

Posted on June 2, 2022

Non binary datingBBC – In the US, ~1.2M LGBTQ adults identify as non-binary, according to a 2021 study by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law. Identifying as non-binary means, simply, not defining one's gender within the male versus female binary. While many dating apps allow users to identify as non-binary, their profiles still get lumped in with men or women when it comes to how other users of the app can view them. Users on Bumble can choose who they'd like to be seen by on the app, like if they want to be seen by "women, men, non-binary people, a selection of two options, or everyone". Then there are dating apps such as Lex, which primarily target users who identify as "queer, trans, gender non-conforming, two spirit, and non-binary".
