How Dating Apps Master the Art of Marketing Matchmaking

Posted on November 30, 2022

Bumble It started with helloCAMPAIGN – According to Data.ai, dating app global downloads have increased 173% from 293M in the H1 2017 to 799M in the H1 2022. Global consumer spending on dating apps increased 320%, from $643M to $2.7B. "Dating apps give singles 'the paradox of choice' – when we have too many choices, we end up not making any," says Violet Lim, co-founder and CEO of Lunch Actually Group, the largest dating agency in Southeast Asia. Lunch Actually differentiates itself from others by focusing on handpicked matches and real dates rather than casual dating. Other apps, including Coffee Meets Bagel, are entirely dedicated to helping daters find serious relationships. Coffee Meets Bagel continually celebrates their #CMBcouples – couples who have met and formed serious relationships on the app – and this continues to drive word of mouth. Bumble has seen success with campaigns like 'It Starts With Hello' that ran in the Philippines and Singapore. The campaign was driven by the insight that some women might be overwhelmed by the idea of starting the conversation on Bumble, so the campaign encourages them to overcome their hesitation by making it as simple as typing 'hello'.

AI Will Transform Online Dating

Posted on November 29, 2022

Woman-swiping-onlineTHE SUN – AI will transform the way people around the world find their matches online, according to Christopher Gulczynski, one of five Tinder's founders and the CEO of the social media platform Niche. "People are hungry for more quality interactions rather than quantity," he said, adding that Tinder and Bumble are more focused on the latter. People could soon carry their online profiles in a chip that would work like a digital wallet. AI could then be used to match people based on factors such as the networks they are in or the hobbies they enjoy.

Google Play to Pilot Third-party Billing in New Markets

Posted on November 11, 2022

Google PlayTECH CRUNCH – Google is expanding its user choice billing pilot, which allows Android app developers to use other payment systems besides Google's own. The program will now become available to new markets, including the U.S., Brazil and South Africa, and Bumble will now join Spotify as one of the pilot testers. Google additionally announced Spotify will now begin rolling out its implementation of the program starting this week. Developers interested in adopting user choice billing have to follow certain UX guidelines set by Google that detail how to implement the feature in their apps. While the general terms offer a 4% reduction in commissions paid to Google when user choice billing is used, Spotify wouldn't comment on its confidential deal with Google, but notes it meets the company's standards of fairness. It's unclear if the streamer has been offered more favorable terms as an early adopter.

A Dating App Subscription Isn’t a Bad Idea at a Time of High Inflation

Posted on November 9, 2022

Dating app screenshotQUARTZ – Like Match, Bumble is set to report an uptick in paying users. Tinder, which accounts for the lion's share of Match's 100M active users, posted a 6% growth in revenue and 7% increase in paying users. Bumble is expected to post a rise in Q3 revenue driven by a surge in paying users. The apps, which weathered the pandemic just fine, don’t seem to be shaken by economic woes either.

Is It Profitable for Dating Apps to Assign Women as Their Head?

Posted on November 9, 2022

Bumble Whitney Wolfe HerdED TIMES – Up until last year, the two most influential dating apps, Tinder and Bumble, were both headed by women. While Whitney Wolfe Herd is currently the CEO of Bumble, Tinder was run by Renate Nyborg until August 2, 2022. Both the female CEOs of the online dating world are targets of media sensationalism. Renate Nyborg became an example for the users of Tinder after she found her husband on the app. She is celebrated as the first female CEO of Tinder, and a write-up in Fortune Magazine calls her "the ultimate testament to Tinder's ability to create healthy, long-term relationships." Under her chairmanship, Tinder won several awards, which include the award for Best CEO for Diversity, and it was categorized as one of the most innovative companies by Fast Company in 2022. However, she was let go of her post within a year.

Indian Dating Apps Take on International Rivals

Posted on November 1, 2022

Aisle logoAFAQS – Though the end goal is the same – to find a partner, maybe get married, Indian and international dating apps are positioned distinctly. When it comes to advertising and marketing messages, Tinder and Bumble focus on the fine nuances of relationships, such as compatibility and consent. Whereas local dating apps like QuackQuack and Aisle have simpler messaging – focussing on finding a life partner. Aisle takes cheeky digs at Tinder and Bumble in its campaigns that highlight that it is not a 'casual' app at all. Tinder and Bumble tend to focus more on urban audiences. A Tier-II or III audience may not even understand the ads. 70% of QuackQuack's users now come from Tier-II and III cities, and there's an 11% increase in the app's female user base. The company has been around for 12 years now but, thanks to the smartphone boom and cheaper Internet access, it has added 10M users over the last two years alone.

Bumble Is Cracking Down on People Making Discriminatory False Reports

Posted on October 27, 2022

Bumble for social mediaCNET – 90% of reports made on Bumble that are directed at daters who happen to be gender nonconforming get dismissed by moderators. In short, Bumble has discovered that some daters will report a profile as a means of discrimination, not because that profile violates any rules. Those who make intentionally false reports could find themselves booted off the platform.
