Interview With Whitney Wolfe, Founder Of Bumble

Posted on February 19, 2016

Bumble whitney wolfe officeKITANDACE – Feb 19 – Whitney Wolfe, a co-founder of Tinder and the sole founder of Bumble, is now working to change the way women and men interact in this space.

Q: How would you describe yourself?
A: Twenty-six, hard working, never sleep, brain goes a million miles an hour, very dedicated to Bumble.

Q: How do you think apps have changed the way we approach dating and relationships?
A: These apps really give you access to things that are outside of your normal reach in your day‑to‑day life.

Q: Bumble stands out because it only allows women to start a conversation. How has this changed our ways of interacting?
A: At the moment, women feel that society judges them for making the first move even though it’s an obvious desire for both sexes. Bumble is striving to empower women to make themselves equal to men in the dating world.

Q: Tell us about founding and running a company as a 26‑year‑old.
A: It's hard but fun when you're passionate about your business.

Q: You refer to your company as being feminist. What is your interpretation of the modern feminist?
A: We want equality for both sexes. We're not trying to put women above men.

Q: What was the best decision you've made to get where you are now?
A: The best decisions I've ever made have been the ones that my gut said yes to or no to immediately.

Whitney Wolfe: People Want Dating Apps Where Women Can Feel In Control

Posted on February 15, 2016

Bumble whitney wolfe1TELEGRAPH.CO.UK – Feb 14 – Whitney Wolfe is 26 and she has already been at the helm of two major dating apps – Tinder, which she accused of sexism on her departure, and now Bumble. She always held back in dating. "When it came to guys I had to sit on my hands. I wasn't allowed to text them first according to my friends and society. That's really broken." She launched Bumble, a dating app where only women are allowed to make the first move. A year in, Wolfe and her team are working on ways to expand the app's influence. They're trialing a reward-system that will benefit "well behaved" users – people who have used the app consistently, interacted with their matches and never been abusive or rude.

Posted on January 14, 2016

Bumble-ages-13-17VANITYFAIR – Jan 13 – A glitch in the dating app Bumble was appearing to limit some adult users to only matching with users between the ages of 13 and 17. For several months, users have been reporting that they're stuck in an uncomfortable, illegal position. Whitney Wolfe, the app's founder said that that issue is a result of back-end confusion that has only impacted ~100 users. Wolfe and her team decided to ban all minors from using the app.

Latest Trend In Online Dating: Matches Don’t Last Forever

Posted on November 29, 2015

Dating appWASHINGTON POST – Nov 28 – Hinge is the latest dating app to add time limits; after a match, users have 24h to start a conversation or the match disappears. If they start chatting, they have 14 days before their conversation vanishes. Bumble also puts a 24h limit on matches; JSwipe matches disappear after 18 days if no one says hello. "Time limits give users that extra momentum to meet up in person," thinks Eli Finkel, a social psychologist. Hinge saw a 70% increase in chats started, and a 50% in how often matches exchanged phone numbers.

Whitney Wolfe Explains Bumble App Concept

Posted on October 13, 2015

Bumble logoBBC NEWS – Oct 12 – Whitney Wolfe, a co-founder of dating app Tinder, says she wants her new company to disrupt the sector, and cut back on the amount of online harassment directed towards women. She says the restrictions in the app which block men from driving the conversations are pushing social change. The word feminism has been co-opted and contorted, she says, but "what it really means is equality between men and women". When women make the first move, she says, men are often flattered and behave much more politely. Bumble isn't the only female-friendly app. Siren, a dating platform made by women, allows women to control their visibility, so they can block their profile from other users.

Users are then suggested matches, and much like Tinder, have the option to swipe right or left. Bumble And The Grade Are Leaving The Online Creeps Behind

Posted on August 17, 2015

Thegrade developmentIBTIMES – Aug 14 – In 2014, Cliff Lerner created an app called Mutually that would connect people by the act of mutual swiping but it also recommended date spots, powered by Yelp reviews. The app didn’t take off, but he learned from it. "The real opportunity was to build a product that catered to women," Lerner said. "Our users asked for something that would help them handle men who were hostile and offensive." So he started The Grade — an app that grades users based on their behavior. Another app, Bumble, announced its own verification system. The app will soon grant checkmarks to users who maintain a quick response time and message ratio, and have never been reported for inappropriate behavior. This type of vetting is not new. OkCupid has a red-yellow-green light system based on response time, but Bumble and The Grade are digging more into user data as a way to increase transparency.
