Harvard Runs eHarmony Vs Match Survey On Misrepresentation

Posted on May 3, 2011

Eharmony match loga OPW – May 3 – A little birdie tells us that Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet & Society is running a survey on iDating on Survey Monkey here.

1. What online dating sites do you currently subscribe to?
2. Why did you subscribe to this/these site(s)?
3. Do you think eHarmony subscribers have a greater likelihood to be more honest in their profiles because of the extensive survey questions they’re required to answer versus users on a site like Match.com where subscribers can say whatever they want in their profiles?
4. Do you think the format of user profiles — and the extent to which users can choose which information they want to fill out in these profiles — affects how honest or deceptive people are on the dating site you use currently?
5. Based on the current dating site you subscribe to, do you think the structure (the way the site is designed) influences fellow subscribers to be more honest or more deceptive in their profiles?
6. How accurately does the content in your profile represent you?
Answers (scale: 1 to 5: 1 being inaccurate, 5 being 100% accurate)
7. Are you satisfied with the dating site you currently subscribe to?
8. On the site you currently subscribe to, do you believe others misrepresent themselves to any degree?
9. Do you think the site you currently subscribe to uses false (i.e. paid actors to talk about their dating services) advertisements in their marketing campaigns?
10. How would you identify your gender?
11. How would you identify your current relationship status?
12. How would you identify your sexual orientation?
13. Are there any dating sites you refuse to subscribe to?
14. Do you have any comments or feedback regarding this survey, the site you belong to or anything else regarding online dating?

Update – this was for a Harvard Extension School course.

92% Live Together Before Marriage

Posted on April 26, 2011

Eharmony-logo UKPA – Apr 25 – Nine in 10 British newlyweds have lived together before their wedding day, a new survey has suggested. The survey by eHarmony.co.uk polled 505 married adults of 25 years or more, and 530 married adults of one year or less. It found it was more common today for couples to separate at some point during their relationship, then get back together at a later stage and marry.

How You Meet Your Spouse Matters

Posted on April 12, 2011

Eharmony-logo EHARMONY BLOG – Feb 10 – Online dating has become the third most-popular way for newlyweds to have met over the past five years. Lately we’ve been asking ourselves a basic question: Does where you meet your spouse make a difference in how happy the marriage is and if the relationship lasts? It turns out that eHarmony couples are more satisfied with their marriages than those who met on Match.com, via friends or family, or at a bar/social event, according to eHarmony study. People who met on eHarmony were 66.6% less likely to get divorced, those who met through school were 41.1% less likely to get divorced, those who met through some other means were 16% more likely to get divorced, and those who met at a bar were 24% more likely to get divorced.

Scary New Dating Site: The Real World

Posted on March 29, 2011

Online dating keyboard WSJ – Mar 19 – For generations, people met at parties, in church or synagogue, through friends. But then we went online. We began making friends on Facebook and trolling for potential partners on websites like Match.com and eHarmony. Sometimes it works. That's, of course, if anyone bothers to email back. A lawsuit filed in Dec and seeking class-action status alleges more than half the profiles on Match.com are "inactive, fake or fraudulent." Match.com GM Mandy Ginsberg says the site's full-time fraud-prevention team works to identify and block fake profiles, including IPs that are in specific countries where fraud is prevalent or that try to set up multiple profiles. There are 1.7M paid subscribers on the site, Ms. Ginsberg says, and fraud happens to very few of them.

Mark Brooks: Sure, the real world is nice.  But online dating is nicer.  Why?  More selection, more safety, and dating sites allow people to get the tough questions out of the way up front.

Internet Dating Use Up 500% In Ten Years

Posted on March 7, 2011

Eharmony-logo EHARMONY BLOG – Mar 6 – An Oxford Internet Institute international study has revealed that 30% of men and women who use the Internet and are interested in starting a relationship have tried online dating sites. That’s up from 6% in 1997. The Oxford Internet Institute (OII) conducted an online questionnaire with 12K couples from 18 countries. Middle-aged men and women (aged 40-69) were the most likely to use online dating sites, with 36% revealing that they met their current partner online.

Dating Sites Should Eliminate Ability To Select Racial Preference

Posted on March 7, 2011

Interracial couple SKIFF.COM – Mar 3 – According to a report in Time that examined racial preference in dating sites, whites were more likely to state they had no racial preference but still only communicated with fellow whites. On the other hand, black people were more likely to state they were interested in other blacks on their profiles but were also more likely to communicate with whites. Psychologist Jerry Mendelsohn said in the report that segregation has become a social norm and "is sort of built into the social scene for the time being." eHarmony and Match.com subconsciously encourage stereotypes in their advertisements. When Americans see couples on TV that feature two individuals of the same race, they ultimately accept that portrayal as a norm.

Dating The Second Time Around

Posted on February 14, 2011

Gian Gonzaga CNN – Feb 11 - Gonzaga is the senior director of research and development at eHarmony.com. His book, "Dating the Second Time Around: Finding Love That Lasts," is packed with practical advice for people eager to give dating another shot.

Q: How do you define second-time love in your book?
A: Most of the people we talked to are divorced, but we think it's any significant relationship.

Q: What are some of the obstacles to dating after a long-term relationship or divorce?
A: Simply access. Where can you find single people who are also looking for relationships?

Q: What about the emotions that may still be lingering from a previous relationship?
A: That's the other really big challenge. People feel like they aren't good at it because a relationship of theirs hasn't worked out.

Q: Can there be lessons learned from the previous relationships?
A: They know the things they absolutely have to have in a partner.

Q: Do you have any advice on how to approach a new relationship?
A: The first part is assessing yourself.

Q: How can you get over the stigma of the internet?
A: There are a lot of people who have met their spouses and partners online and you will find them all around you.

Q: What are the dos and don'ts of a first date?
A: Make sure you're comfortable with wherever the meeting is going to be. Spend more time getting to know the other person rather than trying to get them to know you. Don't share too much about yourself and don't try to sell yourself.
