Facebook Dating to Launch Video Dating

Posted on April 26, 2020

Facebook dating video chatTECH CRUNCH – Apr 24 – Facebook is planning to introduce video calling on Facebook Dating to connect and video call over Messenger. Many rival dating apps are adopting video. Bumble, for a year. Match Group recently rolled out video: Match, Hinge, PoF. Tinder has not yet embraced live video dates, but offers video in profiles. The company couldn't comment on whether or not video dating was in the works for Tinder, but in the post-COVID era, it would be almost bizarre to not offer such feature. Other dating apps have also launched video dating, including eHarmony. Facebook says the feature will roll out in the months ahead.

Mark Brooks: The Meet Group got video right before most dating apps in the West. They were inspired by Momo in China for one-to-many video and refined it on MeetMe, then acquired and powered up a number of brands around the world with video, including Skout, Tagged, Lovoo and now more recently Growlr. Their platform also powers POF's video (ref: March, 2020 press release). Full Disclosure: TMG are a client of Courtland Brooks

Facebook Says Its Dating Service Is Hot, But It’s Probably Not

Posted on February 17, 2020

Facebook dating secret crushFORTUNE – Feb 15 – About two and half years after it first debuted, Facebook's dating service has shown limited signs of progress. Instead, indicators suggest the service may be having difficulty challenging major dating rivals and rolling out in certain countries. Facebook Dating, which the company first introduced in Colombia in 2018, debuted in the U.S. in September and is currently available in 20 countries. Facebook Dating recently hit an unexpected roadblock when it tried to expand to Europe. Former CEO of Match Group Mandy Ginsberg, who announced plans to step down last month, says the company hasn't seen Facebook Dating impact any of its brands, which in 2019 collectively attracted ~ 9.8M subscribers. Gary Swidler, Match Group's CFO who recently also took over the role as chief operating officer said: "You can't underestimate them. But the reality is they're in 20 countries, and when you look at our numbers, there's no impact."

Facebook Dating’s Launch in Europe Postponed

Posted on February 13, 2020

Facebook dating logoTECH CRUNCH – Feb 12 – Facebook has been forced to call off the launch date of its dating service in Europe because it failed to give its lead EU data regulator enough advanced warning – including failing to demonstrate it had performed a legally required assessment of privacy risks. Facebook said dating would arrive in Europe by early 2020 but it just didn't think to keep its lead EU privacy regulator in the loop, despite the DPC having multiple ongoing investigations into other Facebook-owned products at this stage. The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) had sent agents to Facebook's Dublin office seeking documentation that Facebook had failed to provide. The DPC said Facebook first contacted it about the rollout of the dating feature in the EU on February 3.
