The app is like a combination of Tinder and Craigslist's missed connections. Happn, which is already live in New York City, Paris, London, Berlin, Barcelona, Sydney, was founded by former Daily Motion COO Didier Rappaport. It boasts 2.5M users worldwide. It offers users a form of digital flirtation called "charms" which they can purchase – 10 charms for $1.99.

But in reality, who comes home after such an instance and immediately hops on Craigslist to see if the other person has written a post about them? Probably, almost no one. This was one of Paris-based entrepreneur Didier Rappaport’s inspirations behind founding Happn, a new app that’slike Craigslist missed connections and Tinder rolled into one. The app was launched in Paris in early 2014 and has since been expanded to several major cities in Europe and South America, and also L.A., Boston, and San Francisco. There are 2M Happn users to date.

BUSINESS INSIDER – Feb 10 - Happn is the latest addition to the app-based dating scene. It secured $8M, and now boasts ~2M downloads and 700K active monthly users. Around a third of those are in London. Happn uses GPS to connect users who cross paths within a 250 metre radius. There’s no swiping. If users want to grab someone’s attention they can send a “charm.” A small fee is involved for men who want to send out charms. Happn is already in Paris, London, New York, Sydney, and parts of South America, and the team wants to see it expand internationally in the next year or so.

A: When you show to investors that you are able to scale a business in three different cities in Europe, it means that you know how to scale.
Q: How does it make money?
A: It is a freemium model.

A: The idea, but the team who will execute it is even more important.

A Dating App, Happn, To Find A Match Nearby
NY TIMES – Dec 31 – French dating app called Happn started in New York in September. Happn works by simple geolocation. It scoops up every prospective partner within a couple of blocks, or roughly a 275-yard radius. The matching process is very similar to Tinder; if both parties signal interest, the app connects them. If users are interested in someone who has yet to notice them, they can send that person a notification called a “charm.” Though the app is free, charms must be purchased — 10 for $1.99. Happn has just reached 80K users in New York.

TECH CRUNCH – Dec 11 – French dating app Happn just raised an $8M Series A round from Alven Capital and DN Capital, as well as business angels, such as Fabrice Grinda. Happn uses phone’s location to show users potential matches. Happn is now available in Paris, London, Berlin, Barcelona, Madrid and New York. Out of its user base of 1M people, 200K people use Happn every day.

The potential couple can't communicate unless both people are interested. Happn has already taken off in France, with major growth in other European. It has more than 350K members and 100K daily active users. As with any app that uses geolocation, privacy is a concern. Happn CEO, Didier Rappaport, says that the app doesn't track people and only shares profiles and the approximate location of where paths were crossed. Users can only register for the app using their Facebook accounts to avoid fake accounts.
