How Happn Founder Came Up With Great Ideas

Posted on January 9, 2017

Didier-Rappaport-founder-HappnTELEGRAPH.CO.UK – Jan 9 – Didier Rappaport explains how an obsession with the internet led him to co-found video website Dailymotion and the Happn dating app.

Q: What's your business background?
A: I worked as an international textiles trader for almost half my professional life. But when the Internet arrived, I became completely obsessed. I was also one of the three co-founders of Dailymotion, which we sold in 2011. I eventually started Happn in 2013. I spend three hours a day reading and monitoring what's happening in the world. People ask me from where I get my great ideas. It's simply from working and reading.

Q: How did you develop Happn?
A: We started by asking consumers what they didn't like about dating apps. They told us that they were too virtual, deceptive and time-consuming. We wanted to bring the real world into the dating space. So when you open the app, your timeline shows people who are currently around you. We have 25M users worldwide. We want to make it profitable by the end of 2017 and we're pursuing a freemium model.

Mark Brooks: Everyone is pursuing a freemium model. But that runway will run out soon. Media costs are rising. Dating apps will probably lose their luster. More paid acquisition will be necessary.

Tinder’s Competitors Are Banking On Its Sleazy Image

Posted on November 7, 2016

Tinder hateBUSINESS INSIDER – Nov 5 – When Tinder launched in 2012, every match felt like an adrenaline rush. But those matches are no longer quite as exciting. A 2016 study looked at the user reviews of 97 dating apps and analyzed how their quality scores have changed over the past year. Tinder experienced the largest YOY decline. In a 2016 survey by Consumers' Research, 13% of Tinder users reported relationships lasting longer than one month. Its photo-based interface probably contributed to its hookup image. Apps like Bumble, Hinge, Happn, Coffee Meets Bagel, Siren, Her are not heavily photo-based. Bumble has a similar interface as Tinder, but doesn't have the reputation of being a hookup app. That's because only women can message their matches first on Bumble. Men seem to like the app because women seem to take more initiative in starting a conversation. Siren, which launched in late 2015, abandons the swipe interface entirely. It features a daily question and a feed that displays users' answers.

Trending: Dating Apps Adjust For ‘Swipe Culture’

Posted on October 17, 2016

Hinge before and afterKNOXVILLE NEWS SENTINEL – Oct 17 – Apps like Tinder, Happn and Bumble have been known to be used more for hookups. This influenced Hinge to rebrand as the "relationship app," which launched last week. Now for a fee of $7 members have access to users who are looking for more than just a hookup. Hinge refers to the new app as "Instagram profiles for dating." The app encourages conversation. When the user opens the app, they see the people with whom they have already matched, making the experience about the existing connection, not the next one.

Dating Apps Court Older, Wealthier Users

Posted on October 14, 2016

Tinder downloadedWSJ – Oct 12 – After becoming popular among college students, dating apps Tinder, Happn and The League are now welcoming singles in their late 30s and beyond. The reason? Their money. People 35 and older contribute 30% of The League's revenue, though they make up only 20% of its users. "Once you've stocked the shelves, you can start monetizing," said Mark Brooks, CEO of Courtland Brooks, a company that helps dating companies with business development. Daters aged 35 and up, he says, "know what they want and are willing to pay for it." In the US, recurring payments bring in more than 80% of the dating industry's $2.6B in annual revenue, according to Mr. Brooks's estimates. The League's revenue jumped 10% when the company allowed users over 40 to purchase memberships. Tinder charges users 30+ twice what it charges younger users for premium features.

How Are Brands Marketing Through Dating Services

Posted on July 20, 2016

Match starbuck campaignECONSULTANCY – July 19 – A coffee shop is a common location for first dates, so when Match.com announced a "Meet Me at Starbucks" feature in 2015, it made sense. It allows Match.com users to invite each other to Starbucks for a date. Users can also display a Starbucks badge on their profiles. Tinder allows companies to set up profiles to promote their wares to Tinder users. When users match with a branded profile by swiping right, a marketing message can be sent. Dating app Happn has snagged advertisers like Fiat, which used branded profiles to promote the launch of the Fiat 500.

CEO Of Happn, Founder Of Dailymotion, On Success

Posted on July 11, 2016

Happn didier rappaport1ECONOMIC TIMES – Jul 11 – Didier Rappaport defines experience as, "the sum of all the mistakes we have done in the past." He believes that companies should have only one leader. "I started a company in partnership in the past, around 10 years ago. That failed because we were sharing everything, including the way we were leading the company. So, now I have partners. But I have told them that as the CEO, my job is to protect your shares and investments. When you share power, you destroy power as a CEO. A CEO must be surrounded by clever people, who challenge and help him understand the world. You must be open minded, but know at what point you must take decisions. And this, you cannot share," he said.

Huggle Survey: Tinder Is Making People Self-conscious

Posted on July 4, 2016

Huggle logoBUSINESS INSIDER – July 2 – A new survey, carried out by social app Huggle, has found that 62% of people say dating apps like Tinder make them feel self-conscious and depressed about their appearance. Huggle doesn't use "face-swiping" and matches people based on the locations they go to. It works in a similar way to French dating app Happn. Huggle has received investment from Andrey Andreev, the Russian entrepreneur who cofounded dating app and social network Badoo. Huggle was founded by model Stina Sanders and gardening blogger Valerie Stark.

Dating App Happn’s Answer On Safety Concerns

Posted on June 27, 2016

Happn iconHERALDSUN.COM.AU – June 25 – Dating site Happn has 290K users in Australia and 19M globally. The app keeps track of a person's movements to within a 250m radius of each other so there are serious concerns the app could be a stalker's paradise. Happn's head of trends, Marie Cosnard said the "privacy and security" of users was critical when the app was created. "It never shows anyone's exact location," she said. "Happn doesn't record the exact journeys of users either, we just register the crossing points."
