Investors Are Not in Love With Lesbian Dating Apps

Posted on June 15, 2019

Her logoMIC – June 13 – In the early days of dating apps, there was a rush of interest in creating a "lesbian Grindr" – apps like Sizzr and FindHer quickly hit the scene, but neither of them ever got off the ground. Only one app found some success: Dattch (now known as HER), which launched in 2013. But despite HER's popularity, most queer women hadn't heard of it. Robyn Exton, the founder of HER, said that lack of money is the primary roadblock in increasing the app's growth and recognition. She said that a queer-founded business is never going to have the same funding as other apps because many investors don't see queer women as a profitable demographic, despite women's proven spending power. Although HER raised several million dollars in funding in its first few years, the app has always been an indie shop – a bootstrapped entity run on a minimal budget – and that has dramatically impacted both the app's functionality.

Team Behind Dating App HER Takes Pride in Supporting “Womxnhood”

Posted on February 8, 2019

Her icon 2019CNET – Feb 8 – HER bills itself as "the world's largest and most loved free dating app for LGBTQ+ women". "From the outset, what makes HER feel different is that it's designed by a diverse team of LGBTQ+ people for the LGBTQ+ community," said CEO & Founder Robyn Exton. "Other dating apps are typically built by men and then copied and marketed for the broader queer community. Because we're part of the LGBTQ+ community, we know the importance of inclusivity and being made to feel welcome and well-thought-of in this space." When HER first launched in 2015, it was initially only open to female-identified and non-binary users. But in 2016, the app began welcoming all identities other than cis men. HER use the term "womxn," a more progressive nomenclature than women, that's also both intersectional and inclusive, in their user interface copy. All accounts must be verified by phone, Facebook or Instagram first. There are 20 sexual identities to choose from. HER offers a premium membership, with pricing starting at $14.99 per month.

Dating Now Dominates The UK’s Top Grossing Lifestyle Apps

Posted on October 23, 2018

Niche dating appsELITEBUSINESS MAGAZINE – Oct 21 – "Online dating used to be an absolute mystery, even at times a socially ostracised behaviour," says Robyn Exton, founder and CEO of HER, the app for lesbian, bisexual and queer people. "According to Statistic Brain, one fifth of all current committed relationships began online," Exton says, while calling it "normative." A 2017 study from TSB, the bank, found dating pumped £14.5B into the UK economy and dating apps accounted for ~£11.7B of the sum. As of Oct '18, dating dominates the UK's top grossing lifestyle apps on the App Store, accounting for half of the top ten, according to App Annie. Tinder, Bumble and happn also account for the top three grossing lifestyle apps on Google Play. According to Didier Rappaport, CEO and co-founder of happn, the location-based dating app that crossed the 50M user milestone in June 2018. Despite the various players entering the market, the pay-off is growing alongside it. How HER Became The Queer Woman’s Answer To Grindr

Posted on June 28, 2018

Her feedBRIT.CO – June 25 – Robyn Exton, founder and CEO of the dating app HER, names the year 2012 as a turning point in her professional life. Back then, Exton worked at a marketing agency, where she spent the year assigned to a client in the online dating business. She couldn't help but notice some serious holes in the industry: where was the dating service for women, trans, and gender non-conforming folks? Exton quit her job, moved home with her father, and started to learn how to code. In less than a year, she released her first dating app, Dattch (now HER) – a blend of "date" and "catch" – dedicated solely to lesbian, bisexual, and queer folks. The first version of Dattch came out in September 2013, but Exton reveals that it just didn't work the way she had hoped. She went back to the drawing board and started over. Exton and her team spent six months testing their product with users to understand what they really wanted in an app. With 3M users to date, HER is flourishing.

The Dating Elite In China Are Caucasian, Not Asian

Posted on January 8, 2018

Picking people on dating appGLOBAL TIMES – Jan 8 – Lovoo, Badoo, Tinder, Grindr, Her, Tantan, Momo, Blued and LesPark have proliferated both in the West and the East. They have enabled people to meet across social milieus, increased intercultural marriages and has led to more marriage stability, according to the MIT Technology Review magazine. But does it benefit everyone equally? The short answer is no. The nature of the dating apps favors those who are considered "attractive" by society's terms. "Society has been conditioned to see Caucasian people as the standard of beauty" the magazine Study Breaks wrote. Data analysis by OkCupid from 2009 to 2014 proved that people of color and Asian men are marginalized the most in the dating market. To find out more about the role that race plays in online dating in China, the Metropolitan launched a social experiment on the Chinese dating app Tantan. The platform has mainly Chinese users. Surprisingly, the results were similar to previous findings in the US. The Asian man scored lowest with a 3% match rate, while his Western counterpart reached 12% match rate. Meanwhile, the Asian woman received 15% match rate, while the Western woman received 66%.
