FAST COMPANY – July 16 – Her, a lesbian UK based dating app, is launching in US. The app was founded two years ago under the brand name Dattch. Her was designed to encourage conversation between users until they know enough about each other to meet in person. While Dattch was a pure dating app, Her expanded to become a digital place for queer women to converse. While Her raised $1M in March, they’ve yet to nail down a monetization strategy.

In a new Channel 4 documentary, How To Be A Young Billionaire, Robyn admits: 'I want to raise a million dollars.' She managed to impress founder of Bebo – Michael Birch and raised $1M from him and other investors. He said: "She identified an area that we feel was being under served. The app has the potential to be the market leader. Good time to invest."

Robyn Exton has also revealed a seed round that will see the company expanding in the US market, while going increasingly global. The investors include Alexis Ohanian, founder of Reddit, Michael Birch, founder of Bebo, and Andy McLoughlin from Huddle.

FORTUNE – Feb 26 – Robyn Exton wanted to help a gay girlfriend who had gone through a break-up get back on the market. She created Her, a free app for women looking to date other women. The idea is to create a community for lesbians looking to make friends, chat, and date. Dating apps specifically for gay women are limited. The most prominent is Brenda, an app similar to Grindr that was created by a man. Exton herself is gay, and says her San Francisco-based team is made up of four queer women and two straight guys. Exton originally named the service Dattch, a blend of the words “date” and “catch.”

FORTUNE – Feb 10 – Women have been subjected to harassing comments on dating apps, like Tinder and OkCupid, which have been created by largely male teams. Several new dating apps have been created by women such as Coffee Meets Bagel that has attracted $2.8M in funding, and Bumble. On Bumble, only women can initiate the conversation. Three Bay-Area sisters, Arum, Dawoon and Soo Kang launched Coffee Meets Bagel. It uses Facebook info to match users with friends of friends. They get one match a day. If both parties decide they want the introduction, the app sends an ice-breaker question to both. Dattch is a dating app aimed at lesbians. Dattch features a pinterest-like layout which is heavy on pictures. The pictures remove the need for self-description and instead drive conversation towards interests and hobbies.

Based on the Pinterest model, where users upload pictures of things they like, Dattch allows users to create a kind of personality mood board, making profiles much more revealing. A new member has to verify her account by linking it up to her Facebook page.

TECH CRUNCH – Mar 1 – Aimed exclusively at lesbians, bisexual and/or bi-curious women, the Dattch dating app is now launching in SF. The app emphasises photos, and thus draws comparisons with Pinterest in user interface. Dattch does not emphasise proximity-based social networking. It incorporates Facebook Connect and makes a point of weeding out fake profiles created by straight men. Dattch targeted London and other UK cities initially. Australia is also on its roadmap. The mostly female team has closed a $160K Angel round.
