Dating Sites Aim For A Novel Idea: Actual Dates

Posted on July 30, 2012

Howaboutwe logo newBUSINESS WEEK – July 27 - HowAboutWe.com is a startup that offers a platform to suggest first dates. The site has arranged ~1M dates and users must purchase a subscription ($70/6months). “We focus on getting you offline to see if there is real chemistry,” says co-founder Brian Schechter. That’s one reason Schechter says he hardly considers HowAboutWe to be an online dating site at all. Getting would-be daters offline is the industry’s No. 1 trend, according to OkCupid co-founder and CEO, Sam Yagan. Online dating sites have become a $1.3 billion industry during the past decade, according to researcher Marketdata Enterprises. But revenue is expected to slow this year, growing just 7.5%, as the market has become saturated with ~1,500 sites.

Problems Dating Sites Are Facing & Their Solutions

Posted on July 4, 2012

Online dating - heart on keyboardFAST COMPANY – June 28 – Online dating has ballooned to a $4 billion business. Now the industry faces new players and challenges.

oneGoodLove
Problem: Dominated by hookup sites like Grindr and Manhunt, the gay online-dating space underserves relationship-minded folks.
Solution: OneGoodLove, a sort of eHarmony for the gay and lesbian community, is evolving its matching system.

OkCupid
Problem:  To improve matching algorithms, sites need to know who goes on dates with whom and how those dates turn out.
Solution: OkCupid Labs wants to advance its mobile platform to gather new kinds of data on real-world dating behavior. Via the app, users will be encouraged to give instant feedback about their dates with other OkCupiders.

Badoo
Problem: As online daters become conditioned to screening potential mates via in-depth profiles, the process of meeting new people online grows further from how offline attraction really works.
Solution: A social discovery app, Badoo facilitates meetings on the fly by encouraging users to find people right around them based on nothing more than a photo, an age, and an interest or two.

HowAboutWe
Problem: A happy customer is a lost user.
Solution: HowAboutWe, a site that connects people based on user-suggested activities, is launching a service for couples.

Dating Site for Married Couples

Posted on March 9, 2012

Howaboutwe logo newNY TIMES – Mar 9 – HowAboutWe, which until lately targeted only singles, has been a success, attracting ~700K date ideas. But its founders quickly discovered the commercial paradox of the dating site: The better you are at finding love for a client, the faster she signs off and ceases to pay you. “If you succeed,” Mr. Schildkrout says, “you lose.” Later this year, Mr. Schechter and Mr. Schildkrout will release a new dating portal focused on committed couples. It will seek to get them out of their routines, off their feet and on the town for frequent dates.

Operation Match Version 2012

Posted on March 6, 2012

Online dating - couple walking on keyboardUNLIMITED MAGAZINE – Mar 6 – In 1965 a group of Harvard students started Operation Match that used questionnaires to identify compatible matches. When the students sold it three years later they had received ~1M responses which resulted in a few marriages. Today North America’s dating sites attracts 22M users a month, says online dating industry analyst Mark Brooks. Online daters have upwards of 1,000 dating sites to choose from, aside from industry giants Match, eHarmony, OKCupid and PlentyofFish. "Starting a dating site is like starting a restaurant," Brooks says. "It’s very attractive but there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye."

Brian Schechter and Aaron Schildkrout created HowAboutWe.com in 2009. The site is built around going on "awesome dates," with users able to see a list of date proposals in their immediate area. The company has raised ~$19M. Another site Sparkology is invite-only dating site. Other startups include Soul2Match, which links potential dates based on their photos and facial features, and Luv@FirstTweet, which uses Twitter to match singles. At TheJMom.com, matchmaking is left up to parents.

In a report in the Journal of Psychological Science in the Public Interest, a team looked closely and critically at the online dating industry. The researchers found that while online dating has great potential to improve meeting potential romantic partners, the exclusive matching formulas many online dating sites claim to have are unsubstantiated and likely little more effective than randomly approaching strangers at a bar. Sites and apps can facilitate face-to-face interactions quickly. Mark Brooks agrees. "I don’t think people want to come home and spend hours and hours tappity-tapping on the keyboard. They want to be in front of people," he says. "Computer-mediated communication is not gratifying enough for the human soul." Brooks thinks three trends will define the future of the industry: location-based services, mobile services and behavioral matchmaking. "Dating sites that do well will be serving their users’ interests, which means a little more immediacy, a little more help and going mobile," he says.

That instant face-to-face interaction is what MeetMoi, a location-based mobile dating company led by CEO Alex Harrington, has been facilitating since 2007. Users are matched with one another based on preferences and proximity, through application-based and mobile web-based dating.

HowAboutWe To Launch Deals For Couples

Posted on February 29, 2012

Howaboutwe screenshotBANGSTYLE – Feb 28 - HowAboutWe Couples, which will launch in three weeks, is a free service that will send users popular date ideas from the singles’ side of the site. Couples can then use the site to “coordinate on date plans and track places they’ve been. As an added bonus, HowAboutWe Couples will receive “deals and experiences” tailored to dates. Co-creator Aaron Schildkrout is hiring a sales team to source local deals, which will be more Gilt City than Groupon,” he says. “The company doesn’t want to deal in discounts, which is a fully saturated market, but in unique or exclusive "experiences".

Eater.com And HowAboutWe Launch ‘Eater Dating’ For Foodies

Posted on January 19, 2012

Eaterdating screenshotGIGAOM – Jan 18 – The popular blog network Eater.com has teamed up with the online matchmaking service HowAboutWe to launch “Eater Dating”, bringing foodies together for dynamic first dates. HowAboutWe has a simple solution to online dating – instead of choosing your date based on a profile, they allow you to choose your date based on their brief description of a first date event they would like to do. For Eater Dating, they allow you to choose your date based on foodie-centric dates, such as “Sit outside and eat oysters at the Ferry Building”. Both individual sites have gained traction amongst the urban professional crowd, and Eater Dating will allow this group to kill two birds with one stone: meeting someone new for a first date while trying out a new restaurant or bar you’ve been dying to check out anyway.

Instant Date With An App

Posted on November 3, 2011

Dating1-articleLargeNY TIMES – Nov 3 - The idea of meeting someone through a mobile app may seem like a risky proposition. But the operators of these services say they are aware of the potential pitfalls and allow users to control how much information they divulge. Some of the apps are stand-alone, while others are new features of established dating sites; including Blendr, OkCupid Locals and HowAboutWe. OkCupid Locals is part of OkCupid, a larger dating site, which says a tenth of its 2.5M active members use the location features in the mobile app. HowAboutWe began a little over a year ago as a site where people post suggestions for dates they would like to have. The trailblazer among these services is Grindr, which is geared toward gay men and has signed up 2.6M members. In late summer its creators released Blendr, aimed at a broader audience.
