Kingdom Of The Online Cupids

Posted on July 31, 2007

Plentyoffish_logo FINANCIAL POST — July 28 — Dating sites rake in $700-million annually in North America. Canadian companies — from Lavalife to plentyoffish.com — could argue Canada is the capital of the online dating business. Lavalife, sold in March 2004 to U.S.-based Vertrue Inc. for about $150-million, was the start of it all in the late 1980s. The Canadian dating site making the biggest splash is Plentyoffish.com. The site pulls in more than US$5-million a year from text ads that appear beside user profiles.

Courting Singles, Lavalife Wants Phones To Ring

Posted on July 25, 2007

LavalifeDM NEWS — July 24 – Lavalife launched a direct response television spot created by Northern Lights Direct Response Television for Lavalife Voice service. Lavalife has experimented with 30- and 60-sencond spots and found the 30-second spot is the most efficient in cost per metrics. The new commercial, titled "Called Met," focuses on customers calling Lavalife Voice and meeting other singles shortly after. Airing in English and French, the spot is running throughout North America on syndicated and local spots.

Lavalife Online Personals & Social Networking Site for Baby Boomers

Posted on May 31, 2007

Lavalife_2PRESS RELEASE — May 30 — LavalifePRIME is exclusively for mature singles 45+ and offers a mix of online dating and social networking. FREE for a limited time while in BETA or testing mode! "There are more than 85 million Baby Boomers in the U.S. and Canada," said Marina Glogovac, Lavalife's CEO. "As we created lavalifePRIME, we did extensive research that confirmed that Boomers are tired of competing on mainstream dating sites where the overall users are much younger and the emphasis is primarily on looks. This group of mature singles is seeking a place not only to connect with other like-minded singles, but also to uncover important life information, explore new interests, exchange ideas and to maximize their busy lifestyles."

A few interesting statistics on single Boomers:
• 30% of Boomers are single
• 70% of Boomers are internet savvy*
• 70% of single Boomers are dating regularly*
• Of those, 45% of men and 48% of women have sexual intercourse more than once per week*
• Only 14% of Boomer women and 22% of Boomer men are looking to get married or live with someone.* (For the younger groups these numbers are a significantly higher, ie. ages 30-39, 60%.) FULL ARTICLE @ PR LEAP

Mark Brooks: This is an interesting turn. I’ve always associated Lavalife with a sexy young audience and now they are pursuing an older clientele that don’t emphasize looks.

Posted on May 10, 2007

Lavalife_logoOTTAWA CITIZEN — May 9 – Lavalife (1.2 million users) is testing (May23rd launch) lavalifeprime.com as a place for those 45+. "It's meant more for social networking (than dating), so if you want to meet someone in the same city who shares your interest in flower arranging or whatever, you can," said Lally Rementilla, VP of planning. "They may not necessarily be of the opposite gender. They may just be someone you can do things together with."

Lavalife Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Posted on May 1, 2007

Lavalife_logoPR NEWSWIRE — May 1 — Lavalife, originally called Teleclassifieds, was founded in 1987 by five young Toronto-based entrepreneurs who had been experimenting with IVR technology. A brief timeline outlining 20 years of Lavalife:

  • 1987  Teleclassifieds began with phone-based classified services that included personals, pets, furniture and apartments
  • 1988  Teleclassifieds becomes Telepersonals, with only a phone-based personals service that allows singles to meet and talk via phone
  • 1994  Traditional dial-up systems (CompuServe, AOL, Prodigy) begin to provide Internet access. The World Wide Web begins to enter private homes.
  • 1997  Webpersonals launches, allowing singles to come together online in new ways.
  • 1999  Telepersonals expands during the 1990s from its home in Toronto to over 40 cities in North America and Australia.
  • 2001  The Lavalife brand launches across Canada, the United States and Australia.
  • 2004  Lavalife Mobile debuts, allowing singles to expand their interaction to mobile devices.
  • 2006  Lavalife Magazine launches, offering a new style of magazine on the internet with special content just for singles.

The full article was originally published at Free Press Release, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: Webpersonals.com was started in 1994 by Dr Andrew Conru who sold it and then went on to start FriendFinder. Lavalife is strong in Canada, but it's top spot as the country's leading dating site has been supplanted by free dating site PlentyofFish.com

Lavalife Now Charging Monthly Dues

Posted on April 2, 2007

Lavalife_logoOPW — Apr 2 — Lavalife has been unique amongst top tier dating system for the longest time, offering members a credit based billing system. That's now changed, as of mid-March. Lavalife membership is now $29.99 a month. The credits based billing system was especially appealing to twenty somethings and, I think, to those more interested in casual relationships. The youngsters are more likely to be on social networks these days. Older people are more likely to pay for online dating. Lavalife is shifting it's focus, ever so slightly, by changing it's billing system.
