FORTUNE – Match Group CEO Spencer Rascoff revived the company’s canceled Tinder internship program, receiving ~30K applications for 27 positions. The internships will begin June 1 and run through August across engineering, product, design, marketing, and analytics teams. Rascoff said the company is increasing investment in early-career hiring and Gen Z talent, despite broader cuts to internships and entry-level hiring across the tech sector. He also said Match Group plans to hire more workers who are already experienced using AI tools in daily workflows.

Match Group's Spencer Rascoff

FORTUNE – The CEO of Match Group set up an employee hotline where staff can DM him anytime: ‘No hierarchy. No filters. Just real input.’ Spencer Rascoff has broken down the barriers of command, encouraging transparency, so he asked all his employees to start DMing him with feedback, ideas, questions, or concerns. Rascoff reads every message and takes action when employees raise concerns or give valuable feedback. He recognized Match Group needed a reset, and is rebuilding trust and focus. Ideas now progress faster. Rascoff’s admiration of Gen Z’s talent is a breath of fresh air for young staffers.

George Arison: Hardship Fueled His Rise to Self-Made Millionaire

Posted on October 2, 2025
George Arison

FORTUNE – Grindr CEO George Arison immigrated to the U.S. from the Soviet Union and graduated college with just $500 before becoming a self-made millionaire. He says he wants his kids to develop grit rather than grow up sheltered in Palo Alto. To do that, he plans to bring them into the office around age 10 to watch him work 12-hour days. Arison, who previously founded Taxi Magic and has led Grindr since 2022 with a $1M salary plus stock options, believes involving children directly in work and sport builds character and prepares them for life’s challenges.

Gen Z “Throning”: Dating Higher-Status Partners to Boost Social Standing

Posted on September 26, 2025
What is ‘throning’ Gen Z’s shameless new dating trend is gold-digging - with a twist

FORTUNE – “Throning” is Gen Z’s term for dating someone higher status to boost one’s own standing. Plenty of Fish reports ~30% of singles try it, and a Science Advances study shows users aim about 25% “above” their own desirability. Inspired by celebrity pairings (e.g., Kim Kardashian/Kanye West), it’s less about money than access to networks and reputation. Experts say it can pay off long term, even after a breakup, because connections and credibility often stick, but it’s driven by social media status culture and only works if you treat people respectfully rather than using them.

Shareholder Sues Match Group Over Alleged Safety Failures on Tinder and Hinge

Posted on August 11, 2025

Match Group for social mediaFORTUNE – Match Group is facing a shareholder lawsuit alleging its leadership failed to act on long-standing safety issues on Tinder and Hinge, allowing some users accused of sexual assault to remain active for months or years. The suit cites a Pulitzer Center investigation claiming Match has tracked reports of rape and assault across its apps since at least 2016 through a system called Sentinel, yet some offenders evaded removal. One cited case involved cardiologist Stephen Matthews, who was reported in 2020 but stayed on the platforms until his 2023 arrest. The lawsuit, filed ahead of strong earnings in which Match reported rising revenue and user growth, accuses executives and board members of breaches of fiduciary duty, securities violations, and inadequate risk oversight. It seeks corporate governance reforms, restitution of executive pay, and damages payable to the company. Match says it combats violence, removes violators, and invests in safety measures, but has yet to release a promised public safety report.

South Korea’s Fall in Marriages Is an Opportunity, Says Match Group’s Asia CEO

Posted on April 29, 2025

Pairs logoFORTUNE – South Korea's marriages fell by 40% over the last decade, with only 222,400 marriages recorded in 2024, down from 322,807 in 2013. Fertility rates also dropped to 0.75 children per woman. Match Group sees this demographic crisis as an opportunity, launching a Korea-specific version of its Pairs app focused on serious relationships. In Japan, Pairs already accounts for an estimated 10% of marriages. Despite a 6% decline in Asia revenue to $284M in 2024, Match reports a 9% increase in paying users in the region, reaching one million. Beyond South Korea, Match is targeting India next, where acceptance of love marriages is growing rapidly.

Wolfe Herd Returns to Reinvent Bumble as ‘Love Company’

Posted on March 27, 2025

Bumble Whitney Wolfe Herd Mar 2025FORTUNE – Whitney Wolfe Herd is back as CEO of Bumble after 14 months away, following a 90% stock drop, user backlash, and leadership missteps. She admits burnout and an "ego death" during her break and now wants to transform Bumble from a dating app into a "Love Company" focused on self-worth, joy, and personal growth. Her new vision? Shift from "women make the first move" to "make the first move for yourself." She plans to add self-help features, like a Duolingo-style coaching tool, and overhaul the app's rejection-heavy dynamics. She's candid about men's struggles on the app and wants Bumble to serve both genders better. Wolfe Herd says she no longer chases external validation or stock price. She's rebranding Bumble around purpose, not pressure – and says the misery in modern dating (and leadership) stops now.

Netflix Documentary Sparks Surge in Ashley Madison’s Popularity in India

Posted on February 17, 2025

AshleyMadison Netflix documentaryFORTUNE INDIA – Netflix and Hulu documentaries have fueled a surge in Ashley Madison's popularity in India, pushing the country from the eighth to the sixth spot globally in new signups. Despite the platform's controversial history, including a massive 2015 data breach, its membership has now grown to 85M users worldwide, with 1.4M signups from India as of December. Chief Strategy Officer Paul Keable attributes this rise to increased exposure from streaming platforms, noting a 20-30% jump in global signups following the Netflix series.

Hinge CEO Says He Bribed Students With KitKats

Posted on September 25, 2024

Hinge Justin McLeod 2024FORTUNE – Justin McLeod, founder of Hinge, started the dating app while at Harvard Business School. Initially struggling to attract users, he bribed students with KitKats and managed to attract only a few dozen sign-ups daily. To fund the app, McLeod collected checks of $5K to $10K from anyone willing to invest. He even deferred a job offer from McKinsey with a six-figure salary to focus on Hinge, eventually turning it into a success. By 2015, Hinge raised $26M before being acquired by Match Group. Today, McLeod remains Hinge's CEO, with the app earning $396M in 2023. He advises Gen Z entrepreneurs to balance idealism with practicality, encouraging them to take action rather than overthink their career paths.

Gen Z and Millennials Are Leaving Tinder for Hinge in Search of Serious Relationships

Posted on September 6, 2024

HingeFORTUNE – Tinder is struggling as its user growth flatlines, while Hinge is gaining popularity, especially among Gen Z and millennials seeking serious relationships. Hinge's daily active users increased by 17% YOY, while Tinder saw a 10% decrease. Hinge's appeal comes from being perceived as a platform for meaningful connections, while Tinder struggles with its reputation as a hookup app. Match Group faces the challenge of revamping Tinder to attract more serious daters without overlapping too much with Hinge's audience. Tinder is offering new tools like AI wingmen, developed through a deal with OpenAI, to help Gen Z users with flirting and profile design. Hinge focuses on features like limiting active conversations to promote quality interactions and its "Designed to be deleted" strategy, encouraging serious relationships. Tinder also offers "Super Boosts" and more affordable paid features to attract users, though these have seen limited success.
