Dating Apps As The New Social Networks
MASHABLE – July 22 – Dating app Hater, which matches people based on the things they dislike, has discovered that a lot of users just don't seem to care where their potential matches are located — because they have no intention of ever meeting them IRL. So Hater launched Global Mode for those who want to be matched with people around the globe. ~20% of their user traffic is in Global Mode, and those people are mostly using the app just to hang out and talk. The younger a user is, the more likely they are to be on Global Mode. Plenty of people use the major dating apps as a way of expanding their social circles. In an effort to capitalize on this, Bumble added BumbleBFF in early 2016, and Tinder launched Tinder Social a year ago. But they haven't exactly taken off as the premiere way of finding new pals.

Hinge Is Available On Android
MASHABLE – July 11 – Hinge did a total relaunch in October and since then has only been available on iOS. Hinge says they are now seeing fewer connections, but there are more chats happening and numbers being exchanged. They report that a "like" is now 20 times more likely to turn into an IRL date that it was on the old app. The Android app should make it easier for international users to access the apps.
‘Real Conversations Of Grindr’ Reveals HIV Stigma
MASHABLE – July 10 – A new campaign called “Real Conversations of Grindr,” put together by the HIV Foundation Queensland in Australia, got people to read real-life exchanges on Grindr. It starts off with the usual titillating fare, but then descends into discrimination and hatred. “You should be ashamed, you’re a walking disease,” reads one comment. “For people living with HIV, the stigma can often be more damaging than the virus.”
Happn Launches Matching Game – CrushTime
MASHABLE – July 6 – Happn is launching a new feature called CrushTime. It's an addictively simple little game that's being tested in Spain and will be rolling out globally throughout the summer. It works by showing users four different profile pictures of people they've recently been near. One of them will be a person who's already liked them, and they have to guess who it is. If users guess right and they're interested, they can connect right then. Users can't decide when they want to play this game. It just appears by chance. When it comes they have to take it.
Hinge Is Adding Video
MASHABLE – June 27 – Hinge is launching a new video feature that will allow users to add clips to their profile. Hinge's CEO Justin McLeod says, "it adds more texture to profiles, so people can really get a good sense of you." They're not the first of the major apps to go in this direction. Match is launching Stories, a tool that lets users stitch together photos, videos, and voice to tell people about themselves. Back in January, Bumble announced it was adding disappearing snaps, but it has not yet made that feature available. So that makes Hinge the first to actually roll it out.
Match.com To Launch Video Feature – Match Stories
MASHABLE – June 21 – Match Stories will launch this summer. The tool will let users stitch together short profile videos. These stories will be limited to 60 seconds, and it could be a combination of photos and videos. Users can also throw a voiceover on top of that, to talk through what's happening. "Hearing someone talk about their photo is far better than just seeing the photo. Seeing a video and hearing their voice is the holy grail in terms of figuring out your attraction," says Match CEO Mandy Ginsberg.
“First” – A New App That Sends Users On A First Date Immediately
MASHABLE – June 13 – On First users post a date idea and a time, and people can submit to join them. They pick a winner, and then just show up for the date. The app, which launches nationwide for iOS today, is the brainchild of Truman Kain, a 25-year old from LA. His goal is "getting people off of their phones and onto the date."
Someone Uses A Fidget Spinner To Conquer Tinder
MASHABLE – May 24 – One day, Holden Ellis, a 22-year old from Virginia, was bored on Tinder and "chewing on the spinner." He decided to see what happened, and it turns out the silicone reacted with his phone.
Appetence – The World’s First Slow Dating App
MASHABLE – May 11 – New dating app Appetence wants people to take things slow. The app forces users to talk to each other before they can see each other's profile pictures. Upon downloading the app, users are asked to select a bunch of their interests and tastes. The app's "slow matchmaking" algorithm then shows them compatible profiles based on their interests. The app won't show any photos. Users have to chat and like messages first, and they need 50 likes in order to see each others photos. The real question is: Do people really have the time and patience to invest in a protracted conversation with someone you might not actually fancy?
