The dating app is bringing the Snapchat camera to video calls and video messages, so users can access AR lenses directly in Bumble. Bumble is also adding video messages, which users can now send with lenses like hearts or effects like fox ears.

Tinder Releases ‘Are You Sure?’ Feature to Stop Harmful Messages
MASHABLE – May 20 – "Are You Sure?" or AYS? is a real-time warning that utilizes AI to detect inappropriate language. The machine learning was based on what members have reported in the past and, according to Tinder, will evolve and improve over time. When a user types a message that the AI flags, the AYS? prompt pops up. It notes that what they're saying may offend their match, and asks them to pause before sending. In early testing, AYS? reduced harmful language in sent messages by 10%. Tinder also reported that since Does This Bother You? launched, reports of inappropriate messages increased 46%.
Tinder Launches Vibes, A Compatibility Check Feature
MASHABLE – May 5 – Vibes is a new way to test compatibility. Tinder users will be informed when Vibes has kicked off in their area via push notification or when they open the app. They'll be asked to answer a series of questions on any number of topics like pop culture, personality traits to see whether they'll vibe with a possible match. Vibes will be rolling out globally in late May.
OkCupid Predicts August 1 as the Hottest Dating Day of the Year in UK
MASHABLE – Feb 23 – According to OkCupid, Aug. 1 will be "the hottest day for dating in 2021," after Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged to offer all UK adults the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by July 31. Vaccines are a hot topic among online daters at the moment, according to OkCupid data. The dating app reports a 137% increase in the mentions of 'vaccine' on OkCupid profiles between November 2020 and January 2021. 42% of OkCupid respondents said they'd cancel a date with someone who didn't want to take the vaccine.
Bumble Bans Fatphobic Messages and Body Shaming
MASHABLE – Jan 28 – Bumble will be modifying its terms and conditions to prohibit unsolicited, pejorative, disrespectful comments about someone's body shape, size, health, or appearance. Comments that are fatphobic, ableist, racist, colourist, transphobic, or homophobic will also be prohibited. The ban will apply to comments made through the dating app's chat function.
Hinge Rolls out New Features Including Roses
MASHABLE – Dec 7 – Dating app Hinge is rolling out some new features globally. One of them is Roses which works like Tinder Super Likes. In addition to Roses, Hinge is introducing Standouts, and a new feed featuring Prompts and Photo Prompts from possible matches. Standouts will refresh everyday to show users new Prompts curated based on their previous likes and comments sent to possible matches.
Bumble Report: How Single Indians Dated in 2020 Amid the Pandemic
MASHABLE – Dec 3 – The pandemic has led to a paradigm shift in people's lifestyle where everyone is now working, socializing, and dating from home. Bumble has recently conducted a study to understand how dating in 2020 has been redefined and what the trends have been like for daters in India this year. 40% of daters in India said that they are no longer confident about dating successfully and 70% of single Indians say they are not comfortable navigating dating in 2020, while one in two claim they are ready to go on a date in-person. Bumble daters in India are increasingly open to virtual dating with 1 in 5 up for using Video Chat heading into the New Year.
Bumble Has a New “How to Date” Guide
MASHABLE – Nov 21 – 40% of daters don't know how to date anymore, according to Bumble. Also, 2 out of 3 daters aren't comfortable navigating the dating landscape COVID has left in its wake. This is the reason Bumble created Dating 101 to help boost daters' confidence as the new year rapidly approaches. It includes articles and videos on important topics, like having the "COVID conversation" with a potential date, or how to navigate sex and intimacy during this time.
Dating App Usage Is Changing for the Better
MASHABLE – Nov 11 – Between September and October, according to Apptopia, major dating apps grew considerably. Match grew 21%, OkCupid +21%, and Bumble +16%. Tinder and Hinge grew more modestly. "As people become more isolated, the desire and need to establish some sort of intimacy may also be increasing as a coping mechanism," said Dr. Ash Nadkarni, MD, Associate Psychiatrist and Instructor at Harvard Medical School. New positive dating habits are emerging. Match's CEO, Hosseini foresees singles taking their dating app usage more seriously and Match was already seeing a slower shift from hookup culture to more intentional dating. Match's Singles in America survey, released last month, (5k+ people), found 58% of single app daters shifted toward more intentional dating due to the pandemic. 63% said they're spending more time getting to know potential partners. 70% said they're being more honest in their interactions. 45% of Hinge users reported developing new healthy dating habits during the pandemic, such as being up front about what they want. Hinge dates went up 17% this summer, ghosting went down 27%.
Hinge and Headspace Launch Free Pre-date Meditations
MASHABLE – Oct 6 – From today, daters can access Hinge and Headspace's pre-date guided mediations on hinge.co/headspace at no cost. The meditations last around five to six minutes and they tackle a number of emotions singles might be feeling before a date, from self-doubt to negative self-talk.
