Appliance Of Science In Finding Love Online

Posted on September 7, 2009

Eharmony-logoTELEGRAPH.CO.UK — Sep 5 – eHarmony, which is launching a major advertising push into
the UK this month, claims 236 of its successfully-matched couples get
married every day in the US. eHarmony used the research to create a
patented algorithm to match up potential lovebirds' core traits and
personalities. "This is real scientific stuff, we've got the UCLA
marriage lab and six PhDs working on this," says Dr Warren Waldorf. The
company has expanded into Canada, Australia and the UK and is "actively
looking" at opening in several other countries. It is also exploring
the possibility of specialist ethnic and religious sites. Since its
launch in the UK a year ago, eHarmony has attracted just 400,000
members, compared with 6.5m at rival Match.com. FULL ARTICLE @ TELEGRAPH.CO.UK

Recession Boosts Online Dating

Posted on January 5, 2009

Online_dating_070615_ms TELEGRAPH.CO.UK — Jan 5 — Match.com reported pre-tax profit of £3.67m in the year to 12/31/07, compared with a loss of £2.19m a year before. Last year, total revenue for Match worldwide rose 12% to $348.7m (£240m) and operating income rose 13% to $65.8m. The international growth was driven by the UK and Scandinavia. British dating sites in general are seeing a rise in members despite the credit crunch. Nielsen Online indicate a 15% rise in unique users visiting online dating sites in Nov compared with the same month last year. Match and EasyDate, which owns the SpeedDater, DatetheUK and BeNaughty brands, say they have seen some of their best days of trading since the collapse of Lehman Brothers ramped up global financial turmoil in September. Ross Williams, founder and chairman of WhiteLabelDating.com, says its database of members has grown by 250% to over 1m in the UK, and overall annualised revenues have increased by 450% to over £12m in the past 12 months as the dating sector booms in the economic gloom. Mark Brooks, an internet dating analyst, says: "The entire industry, with the exception of more marginal traditional matchmakers, is doing better despite the downturn." founded in 2003. You can start a new

But while the house and the heels stay in Second Life, the real
people behind the avatars carry their heightened emotions back into
their first life – sometimes with devastating consequences for their
marriage or relationship. FULL ARTICLE @ TELEGRAPH.CO.UK

Shaadi.com: A Match Made In Cyberspace

Posted on June 9, 2008

Shaadi_logo
TELEGRAPH.CO.UK — June 7 — Boasting
10m members and a million marriages in 11 years, Shaadi (400 employees)
has
been a runaway success. Shaadi.com was launched in 1997 by Anupam
Mittal, a business graduate of Boston College in the US. Now Shaadi is
one of India’s five most popular
sites. It boasts 300m page views
each month and 6,000 new profiles are added every day (60% of
which are male). Despite having the second fastest-growing economy in
the world,
India remains a deeply conservative society, especially where marriage
and relationships are concerned. A recent magazine survey revealed that
more than 60% of young unmarried Indians disapproved of the
idea of sex before marriage; 40% said they wanted to marry
within their own caste. An estimated 95% of all marriages in
India are arranged, usually after lengthy negotiations between two
families. Shaadi.com also provides additional services: a
directory listing of wedding-related services; a lifestyle website, shaaditimes.com, with features on travel, fashion and health; and a sister site, secondshaadi.com,
for divorcees and widows. There are also more than 150 Shaadi.com
Centres in 87 Indian cities, where parents and children can sit down
with a relationship adviser and trawl the company’s database. FULL ARTICLE @ TELEGRAPH.CO.UK

Mark Brooks: Bharat Matrimony is Shaadi’s main competitor in India. I interviewed Bharat Matrimony’s CEO/Founder here (Dec’ 2006). Both companies use a network of agents to service those without computers and the internet across India.
