Dating App Study Shows What Apps People Delete On The First Day
FORBES – Feb 14 – According to Ogury study, Sunday night is Grindr night in the U.K.; in the U.S., women appear to be swiping hard on MeetMe on Saturday, while men step up their MeetMe usage on Sunday. The only day of the week that both seem to be on the same page was Monday, with both hitting POF. Internationally, Thursday is the most popular day with 27 minutes and 32 seconds spent on dating apps across all tracked platforms. Most uninstalls of all dating apps happen on the first day. Grindr had the lowest first day delete rate. Women seemed to keep MeetMe around a bit longer, deleting that on the second day.

How Markus Frind Bootstrapped His Million-Dollar Company
ENTREPRENEUR – Jan 27 – How'd you like to sidestep the VC crowd altogether and still see your company pull in $10M a year? Markus Frind did just that. Bootstrapping is difficult. To thrive, most companies rely on cash they obtain from venture capitalists. However, fewer of these deals are being made these days. Also, the more money a startup raises in its seed and Series A rounds, the more likely it is to fail, according to top investors. Markus Frind went it alone, from start to very profitable end, selling his dating site POF for a $575M in 2015. Because he bootstrapped it himself, he got to take home the profits. In 2003, Frind managed to master ASP.NET, at the time a brand new language. After quickly teaching himself, he created his site, and within two weeks, people were signing up. As time went on, Plenty of Fish by 2007 was outcompeting Match.com for traffic fourfold. And even then, Frind was employing just three people. A year later, his site was raking in $10M a year. Search engine traffic accounted for 2% of all his site's traffic. Instead, people were finding the site via word of mouth. So, Frind barely had to do any advertising.
Plenty Of Fish Adds New Conversation Features To Differentiate Itself From Tinder
TECH CRUNCH – Dec 14 – POF was founded in 2003, then sold to Match Group in 2015 for $575M. It has since remained fairly quiet. That is now changing. POF is set to launch a collection of new modern features, called "Conversation Powers". It includes voice messaging, video calling, and the ability to share photos in chats. In the near future, it will also include the ability to share GIFs in conversations and add illustrations to photos, like doodles and stickers. POF will trigger the "Conversation Powers" after users have chatted with a match for a period of time. POF aims to differentiate itself from Tinder and others going forward by doubling down on conversations – something that's already a key focus for the company. POF claims 150M registered users worldwide. The company also says it was seeing $80M in revenue at the time of its acquisition, and has been growing that in the double-digits since.

APP DEVELOPER MAGAZINE – Dec 7 – Tech buy-back site Decluttr has crunched some numbers, looking at just how much money apps like Tinder, Bumble and Match are making every minute. Tinder is making ~$1,500 per minute. Bumble makes $172 per minute. Match and Plenty of Fish come in at third and fourth place, earning $134 and $78 per minute, respectively. Ashley Madison has struggled to recover from its 2015 data breach controversy, now making just $28 per minute. New startup Huggle is currently making just $0.10 per minute. However, with over 45M places logged in the app already, and a growing number of celebrity fans, we may see Huggle climb the rankings in 2018.
