Match Group’s CEO on Innovating in a Fast-Changing Industry

Match group mandy ginsberg linkedinHBR.ORG – Aug 5 – The speed of change is one of the things I love about this industry. Companies need to innovate constantly – with technology, pricing, product features, and business models – to stay ahead of competitors and continue to grow. I ran Chemistry.com from 2006 to 2008. It was my first general management job, and I loved building the team. We grew the site quickly. As Chemistry.com expanded, the company's flagship Match.com seemed to be plateauing. So in 2008 management asked me to move over to Match.com and try to reenergize that brand. Two important shifts were under way that hurt Match.com. First, OkCupid and Plenty of Fish, had pioneered a new ad-supported business model. The second shift involved algorithms. By 2008 companies were getting more sophisticated about analyzing and understanding users' preferences and behavior. In 2009 Match made its first big acquisition, in the form of a company called People Media, that had a variety of smaller sites aimed at specific demographics. Facebook and Twitter were bringing more people onto social media, which sparked more interest in online dating, especially from older people. The biggest technology shift came after 2008. That's when Apple introduced the App Store. Within a few years that completely changed the face of our industry – a change sparked largely by Tinder. Last year Tinder's revenue topped $800M, demonstrating that many people are willing to pay for features. Right now we're working on several new strategies that we expect will drive our next phase of growth.

Can We Trust the Match Group Cartel With Our Dating Data?

Match group brands 2019PROPRIVACY – June 6 – Nearly half of the Match Group's subscribers are not aware of the other dating platforms owned by IAC. 61% of subscribers across Match.com, Tinder, OKCupid, Plenty of Fish and Hinge are concerned about the amount of data they share with the platforms. 65% don't know who owns their dating service. In order for online dating services to be effective at finding compatible partners, they require data. The more personal data they feed into the platforms, the better chance they have of finding a match. But many users don't realize just how much data they're giving away or exactly how these companies use that data once it's handed it over. This lack of awareness is by design. Tinder states in its privacy policy, "…we do not promise, and you should not expect, that your personal information will always remain secure."

US Singles Are Crossing Party Lines Again After 2016 Elections

Match Group Mandy Ginsberg 2018ABC NEWS – May 23 – Many Americans have dated people with a different political affiliation, but that changed after the 2016 election, according to Match Group. In fact, in 2016, there was a period when Americans seemed less interested in dating in general. "For a couple weeks after the election, our traffic went down significantly," said Match Group CEO Mandy Ginsberg. "We saw our female traffic going down. It was a little bit worrisome because you need women on the apps," Ginsberg said. But over time things have gone back to normal. Ginsberg said that in general, people tend to date over political, socioeconomic, racial and educational divides. However, different apps within Match Group tend to attract people with certain political leanings. Tinder doesn't ask for any political affiliation information. PlentyofFish is considered more "red state" app, according to Ginsberg, OkCupid is a "blue state app."

POF Founder Markus Frind Sets His Sights on B.C. Wine Industry

Markus frind vineryTHE GLOBE AND MAIL – Apr 29 – Markus Frind sold POF for $575M in 2015 and is now establishing his Frind Estate Winery in the Okanagan region. With famed winemaker Eric von Krosigk – co-founder of Summerhill Estate Winery and winner of 300 wine medals – overseeing the operation, the business is set to bottle its first product in May. It will start selling in June at its production facility, located on the 13-acre West Kelowna lakeside estate once owned by former premiers W.A.C. Bennett and son Bill Bennett that Mr. Frind purchased for $7.2M in 2017. B.C. has 280 wineries and the provincial industry is dominated by three giants: VMF Estates, Arterra Wines Canada, and publicly traded Andrew Peller. But Mr. Frind maintains his business "will be a serious winery, one of the biggest in B.C." Central to Mr. Frind's plan is turning 300 acres of hilly grazing land in Kelowna into terrain suitable for vineyards. With no water on site and no opportunity under provincial law to subdivide for development, the land sat on the market for years before he bought it for $3.7M in Sep, 2017.

Disney Fans Are Luckier Finding Love Online

DisneylandUSA TODAY – Apr 11 – Data from Plenty of Fish reveals that singles who have expressed an interest in Disney are 3.6 times more likely to leave the app in a relationship compared to singles who more generally list interests in music and movies. POF uncovered the Disney love connection after analyzing ~ 7M user profiles. Women interested in Disney are 25% more likely to receive messages on POF compared to females who list more common interests.

And some 49% would stay on a date even if they felt unsafe. A third of people don't tell friends or family when they go on a date, or where they are going.

10 Years Ago, Match.com Was Dying, According to Markus Frind

Blast from the past postOPW 'BLAST FROM THE PAST' – Jan 3 – This month, 10 years ago, Match.com launched a free dating site DownToEarth as an answer to ever growing threat from Markus Frind's free dating site – PlentyOfFish. DownToEarth only lasted 10 months when Match.com decided to relaunch it as Stir.com, a service that would recommend the best places to go and meet like-minded people. Mandy Ginsberg, back then GM of Match.com, commented: "It became obvious that DownToEarth resonated with 18-25 years old. Based on feedback, we are evolving the site experience to be more relevant for that audience which includes suggestions for places to hang out as well as people to go there with." Match needed to create a product to draw in and warm up a new generation of Match.com users. Stir seemed like a good idea at that time but little did they know that the real game changer (Tinder) was yet to come. In the meantime, money kept on rolling in for PlentyOfFish.com. The site was bringing in $10M annual revenue with 50% profit. "Yahoo is a complete joke, Google is a cult, and Match is dying," said Frind in an interview with INC. in January 2009. Fast forward 10 years, Match Group is an $11B dating empire which owns 50+ dating brands including PlentyOfFish which Frind sold to Match for $575M in cash in 2015. Meanwhile, Markus Frind, happy to keep every single penny from the POF sale, is venturing into the wine business by opening Frind Estate Winery in West Kelowna, Canada.
