TECH CRUNCH – June 30 – Consumer spending on mobile apps grew significantly during H1 2020, in part due to the COVID-19, according to Sensor Tower. In H1, consumers spent $50B worldwide across the App Store and Google Play, up 23.4% from the H1of 2019. In addition, first-time app installs were up 26.1% YOY to reach 71.5B downloads. During the H1 2020, Tinder generated ~$433M in spending across both app stores, combined. However, this number does represent a decrease of ~19% YOY. It's unclear how much that decline is related to consumers' changing behavior and spending habits during the pandemic. TikTok was the most-downloaded app, the No. 2 and No. 3 apps were WhatsApp and Zoom, respectively.

The company couldn't comment on whether or not video dating was in the works for Tinder, but in the post-COVID era, it would be almost bizarre to not offer such feature. Other dating apps have also launched video dating, including eHarmony. Facebook says the feature will roll out in the months ahead.

Mark Brooks: The Meet Group got video right before most dating apps in the West. They were inspired by Momo in China for one-to-many video and refined it on MeetMe, then acquired and powered up a number of brands around the world with video, including Skout, Tagged, Lovoo and now more recently Growlr. Their platform also powers POF's video (ref: March, 2020 press release). Full Disclosure: TMG are a client of Courtland Brooks

App Revenue Climbs 23% YOY to $21.9B in Q3
TECH CRUNCH – Oct 11 – In the Q3 of 2019, consumer revenue grew 22.9% YOY from $17.9B to reach ~$21.9B across both the App Store and Google Play worldwide, according to new data from Sensor Tower. The App Store continues to account for the large majority of this revenue, making up 65% of total spending compared with just 35% on Google Play. App Store users spent $14.2B, up 22.3% from $11.6B in Q3 2018. Google Play generated $7.7B in revenue, up 24% from $6.2B in Q3 2018. Despite the overall growth, one big app market – China – saw a slight decline. Its installs dropped 6% YOY to 2.2B. But its revenue grew by 26.9% to $4.1B. This could be attributed to the nine-month game license freeze in China which, though now lifted, had slowed momentum. The top money-making (non-game) app in the quarter was again Tinder, which generated $233M in consumer spending, up 7% over the prior quarter. Netflix was No. 2 and YouTube clocked in at No. 3, at $164M in Q3.
