The League Launches In Boston

Posted on October 21, 2016

The league logoBOSTON GLOBE – Oct 17 – The app officially debuts in Boston on Oct 26 but has already accepted 2K local founding members, a diverse group of singles from businesses, academia, the medical field, and the nonprofit sector. An Ivy League degree isn't necessary to get in, but it helps. The free app's algorithm screens applicants' Facebook and LinkedIn profiles to identify their university degrees, title and employer, preferences, size of their network, and other relevant variables.

Dating Apps Court Older, Wealthier Users

Posted on October 14, 2016

Tinder downloadedWSJ – Oct 12 – After becoming popular among college students, dating apps Tinder, Happn and The League are now welcoming singles in their late 30s and beyond. The reason? Their money. People 35 and older contribute 30% of The League's revenue, though they make up only 20% of its users. "Once you've stocked the shelves, you can start monetizing," said Mark Brooks, CEO of Courtland Brooks, a company that helps dating companies with business development. Daters aged 35 and up, he says, "know what they want and are willing to pay for it." In the US, recurring payments bring in more than 80% of the dating industry's $2.6B in annual revenue, according to Mr. Brooks's estimates. The League's revenue jumped 10% when the company allowed users over 40 to purchase memberships. Tinder charges users 30+ twice what it charges younger users for premium features.

Dating Apps: Tech Doesn’t Matter, Says Sex Columnist

Posted on October 10, 2015

Dating appsNYMAG – Oct 6 – Users choose dating apps the same way they choose bars – based on the people. The make-or-break factor in whether users stick around, is the crowd. With new apps getting launched every few months,  the dating app people will like best is the one that happens to have a user base that fits the demographic of people they want.

Here's a breakdown of some of the dating apps Maureen O'Connor, a sex columnist, have experimented with:

  • Tinder: Single people who hang out at bars.
  • OKCupid: Single people who hang out at coffee shops.
  • Match: Squares.
  • JDate: Jewish squares.
  • eHarmony: Christian squares.
  • Ashley Madison: Horny married guys.
  • Blendr: Horny single guys.
  • Happn: People with nice jeans who live near your subway stop.
  • Coffee Meets Bagel: Risk-averse nice guys.
  • The League: Hedge funds and Hamptons.

Dating apps, like all social situations, are malleable. They're whatever people want them to be.

Are Black Dating Apps Necessary?

Posted on October 1, 2015

Soulswipe screenshotFUSION – Oct 1 – Bae, a dating app which stands for Before Anyone Else, is aimed at black singles. Bae is not the only one but with ~100,000 downloads since April, it may be the biggest. A competitor, Meld, intended for more serious-minded black professionals, doesn’t disclose its user base, but says it has matched 3K couples since its debut last year. There’s also Soul Swipe and The League. According to an experiment by Anne Helen Petersen at Buzzfeed last year, the "more" black a user registers as, the less likely he or she will get a right swipe. Education and wealth help, but users of color still appear to be at a disadvantage.
