Tinder and Bumble are Tanking Because They Treat Men Badly, Grindr CEO Said

Posted on July 22, 2024

Grindr George ArisonFORTUNE – Grindr CEO George Arison criticized Tinder and Bumble for neglecting their male users, who constitute 70% of their user base, at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference. Despite men often paying for premium services, their experience remains frustrating, leading many to quit online dating. Connell Barrett, founder of Dating Transformation, echoed these sentiments, noting that only 20% of men receive most matches while the rest struggle. Both suggested improvements like AI-generated dating advice and in-app dating therapists. Arison also highlighted that dating apps focus more on women's experiences, which he finds offensive, and called for a more balanced approach to benefit all users.

Tinder Executive Melissa Hobley Champions Both Digital and Real-Life Dating

Posted on July 19, 2024

Tinder Melissa HobleyNEW YORK TIMES – Melissa Hobley, Tinder's CMO, balances her role at the dating app with being a real-life matchmaker. She is the chief marketing officer of Tinder, a position she’s held since August 2022. Before that she worked for OkCupid for over five years. Despite Tinder's success, Hobley acknowledges the value of in-person connections. She believes dating apps are crucial for those who can't easily meet people offline, like single parents or individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. Research shows only 8% of offline daters find it easy to meet someone in real life, highlighting the need for alternative ways to connect. She advocates for a mix of digital and real-life dating methods.

Tinder Wins Legal Battle Against Hoccer in Germany

Posted on July 9, 2024

TinderJUVE PATENT – Match Group, owner of Tinder, has successfully avoided a shutdown of its dating service in Germany after the Federal Court of Justice invalidated a key patent held by Hoccer, a Berlin-based company. Hoccer had sued Match Group for patent infringement, aiming to secure a licensing agreement for Tinder. Initially, Hoccer won an injunction in 2019, temporarily halting Tinder's operations in Germany. However, the Federal Court of Justice declared Hoccer's patent, which covered a system for transmitting data between communication devices, invalid. This ruling ended the legal dispute and allowed Tinder to continue operating in Germany. Hoccer, whose app focuses on encrypted data exchange, will not receive any licensing fees from Match Group and must withdraw its appeal.

Tinder Writes Its Own Romcoms for the Dating App Era

Posted on July 9, 2024

Tinder rom com adsADWEEK – Tinder's new ads reimagine classic romantic movie moments to show how modern love starts on dating apps. In one ad, a library scene with actors Lana Condor and Evan Mock plays out like a romcom but reveals the interaction actually happened on Tinder. The ads are part of Tinder's "It Starts With a Swipe" campaign, aimed at challenging unrealistic expectations of romance. The campaign highlights that real connections happen on Tinder, even if they start differently than in movies. These ads, inspired by real Tinder messages, will run globally and promote Tinder's singles events. Tinder's goal is to change its image from a hookup app to a platform for meaningful relationships.

Singles Are Fed up With Dating Apps and Returning to the Real World to Meet Their Match

Posted on May 31, 2024

Online datingTHE GLOBE AND MAIL – From Gen Z to seniors, many are tired of online dating due to mind games, ghosting, rejection, scammers, and increasing costs. App downloads for Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble have declined since 2020. Pew Research Center found that 11% of hetero couples and nearly 30% of LGBTQIA+ couples met online, but many now find online dating too much work with little payoff. In response, Tinder and Bumble have added features, but user dissatisfaction persists. Speed dating and matchmaking services are making a comeback, offering real-world interactions and personalized matchmaking, often at a premium cost. This shift reflects a desire to return to more traditional dating methods.
