David Cliff, Internet Dating Affiliate – OPW Interview

Posted on October 11, 2008

Davesmallercopy OPW INTERVIEW — Oct 11 — David Cliff is an internet dating affiliate. Rather than just be an affiliate of traditional dating sites, he’s started up his own sites under a white labeler. Its going well for him. Here’s his story. – Mark Brooks

David, tell us how you got started in the online dating industry and how your business has been performing since then?
I joined a dating site myself as I was interested to see how the site worked. I joined Singles365.com which is run by WhiteLabelDating.com.

There was a box in the corner of the page inviting people to start their own dating site. So I thought this was a good idea because if I start my own dating site it would be cheaper for me to be a member. I started up my own site and invested about 100 pounds on some ads with Google in the UK. There was only 30 or 40 pounds return after the first month so I thought it didn’t work too well and I wasn’t going to invest any more. Then more revenue came in as people, once they joined, stayed for a second month and then a third month. So I thought it might not be so bad after all. I got some advice from WhiteLabelDating.com and started investing more money.

InstantFriends.co.uk went from strength to strength and I started setting up some more sites from other markets which WhiteLabelDating.com offered, including adult dating. InstantHotDates.co.uk was the next one I set up, then InstantGayFriends.co.uk and a few more. I also did one for military dating and one for senior dating.

When WhiteLabelDating.com got into the U.S I thought well let’s give this a go as well. So we’ve now got InstantFriends.us, Dates4Sex.us, SeniorDating4Fun.us and MilitaryDating4Fun.us. There are now 15 sites in total.

What are your thoughts on WhiteLabelDating.com? How they worked out for you personally?
After I set up the first site InstantFriends.co.uk with WhiteLabelDating.com, I looked at other providers. One of them was the FriendFinder Network. I did see some quite favorable results but the big difference I experienced with the WhiteLabelDating sites was in the retention rates. The members were staying for much longer. I was receiving a residual income each month from the WLD sites which I wasn’t receiving from any of the others.

Are you happy with the support the company provides you?
I’m very happy. I’ll be 55 in November and I was 50 before I sent my first email. So computers are all rather new to me although I have a sales and marketing background. I didn’t know anything about computers so the support that I received from WhiteLabelDating.com was excellent.

Is the online dating business a hobby or is it your primary income?
This has now become the largest part of my income. We’re looking at about $20,000 a month from InstantFriends.co.uk of which I’m receiving about $10,000. And that’s just from one site. I do also work in a local radio station in London which is very much a hobby and I love doing it. My income is coming from the dating sites.

What made you decide to enter the U.S. market?
I had seen the success of the sites I’m operating in the UK and I’ve seen a lot of the American sites trying to get subscribers in the UK. So I thought it would be interesting to see what happens with a British site in the U.S. We have to wait and see what the results are because its too early, it’s only been 14 days. In the first month of operating InstantFriends in the U.K., I thought it was a waste of time. I have to give it a couple of months, certainly 3 months before I know whether I’m going to make it in America or not.

White Label Has Taken Off

Posted on September 11, 2008

Whitelabeldating_logo STARTUPS.CO.UK — Sep 10 — White labelling is one idea which has taken off in recent years – selling your product to a larger business so it can slap branding on it and call it its own. The best thing about it is that white labeling can work for any product or service, from cornflakes to cakes to software. It has even worked for dating websites – whitelabeldating.com provides the software, membership database, and technical support, you provide the brand. In 2005, the white label market was worth £29.2bn, and it's predicted to exceed £36bn by 2011.

WhiteLabelDating.com On The Track

Posted on August 31, 2008

Whitelabeldating_logo WLD BLOG — Aug 28 — If you have watched our Partner Testimonial Video, you will see that we have a fantastic relationship with our partners, so, in celebration of this and everyone’s recent success as business is booming, we decided it was about time for a little get together. So off we went to Northampton’s International Raceway, thrashing stock cars around a racetrack! The day included racing Formula 2 stock cars, off-road Capri bangers and the Dell Boy challenge in Reliant Robins.

Mark Brooks: Nothing is more compelling than testimonials, especially in video format. Besides eHarmony, I've yet to see a dating site offer up testimonials in video format. PlentyofFish.com has the most text testimonials of any dating site, followed by ChristianCafe.com. Match has a great testimonials section as well. Courtland Brooks is responsible for MatchmakerSuccess.com for The Right One and Together Dating. (Disclosure: WLD, PlentyofFish and The Right One & Together Dating are clients of Courtland Brooks.

Three New White Label Dating Sites

Posted on August 18, 2008

White_label_datingOPW — Aug 17 — Adaptation Dating, a company run by two 22 year olds, has launched three new UK casual dating sites today, on the White Label Dating platform.  NaughtyOverForty, FilthyOverFifty and DirtyOverThirty (not suitable for work). Philip Harris has a background in graphic design and advertising and Thomas Fide has a film and media degree and is a web designer.

Mark Brooks: White labeling is taking off in the UK. 4 of the top 10 dating sites (per Hitwise, June '08) are sites run on white label dating platforms.  But there still seems to be minimal white labeling competition in the USA.  None of the top 25 are white labels (per Hitwise, June '08) (Disclosure: WLD is a client of Courtland Brooks and OPW sponsor)

Brief encounter: Steve Pammenter, MD, WhiteLabelDating.com

Posted on August 13, 2008

Pammenter NEW MEDIA KNOWLEDGE — Aug 6 — According to dating software company, WhiteLabelDating.com, having a relevant web site will always encourage relevant people to dip their hands into their pockets. We speak to Steve, Pammenter, managing director about profiting from niche.

Q: What's WhiteLabelDating.com?
A: WhiteLabelDating.com enables partners to set up their own branded, online dating sites.
Q: So is it quite similar to Ning.
A: Yeah, however, for our partners we also offer a database of contacts, and obviously the market it is targeted at is different.

Q: What are the differences between the online dating sites that you have in your portfolio?
A: The main difference are the networks within the database, some of which include: Adult, General, Over 50's, casual etc. Traditionally, these specialised sites produce a lower volume of members but have higher conversion rates.

Q: Do you do anything differently to target the various demographics?
A: We provide the tools for our partners and they can create what they think will appeal to their target audience.

Q: What other forms of communications will you be looking at implementing into your offering?
A: We already use a range of communications tools such as instant messaging and video chat. One of our main focuses will be in improving the personality profile matching.

Q: Will microblogging and blogs be integrated into the offering?
A: To a certain extent our members already have the ability to blog on their profiles, using the Diary facility we provide for them. They also have use of chat rooms, which is used as a main 'community' chat facility.

Q: What is your business model?
A: Our business is a white label service. It allows partners to drive traffic to the database and take the revenue share of subscriptions. Our additional revenue streams include mobile technology and Lifestyle Facility (i.e. personality matching, horoscopes etc). We are currently exploring other services.

Q: And what are these?
A: We have our own currency on the sites which can be used to purchase virtual gifts. We are looking at how we can improve this application and integrate it into the customer experience.

Q: But aren't we all bored with throwing sheep? On Facebook these are free, why would people pay for them?
A: Gifts on Facebook are little more than token gestures – send them to everyone. However, on our dating sites, people buy gifts for a reason.

Q: What sets you apart from other dating sites?
A: For our partners, our conversion rates and stickability are much greater. Our members generally remain much longer than other dating sites and use the site more often.

Q: Because of the niche markets?
A: In the last year we have seen the niche sites vastly outperform the more general sites, in some cases having doubled the rate of retention.

Q: How do you see online dating integrating with social networks or will they remain completely separate?
A: In my opinion they will remain separate.
