Winter is #1 Break-Up Season

Posted on January 18, 2008

Yahoopersonals_logo PRESS RELEASE — Jan 17 — Research conducted by Yahoo! Personals shows that we are now in National Break-Up Season. The survey revealed some major faux pas to avoid when it comes to breaking up: Digital Don'ts – 28% of the respondents selected "sending a text or instant message" or "through e-mail" as the worst methods for breaking up. 19% considered Monday the best day to break up with someone. 37 % selected "a public place" as the worst location to break up. A complete National Break-Up Season survival guide can be found online at http://personals.yahoo.com/breakup.

Yahoo! Personals, Egon Smola, GM Interview – Delight Your Users!

Posted on January 1, 2008

EgonsmolaOPW INTERVIEW — Jan 1 — Yahoo! Personals ranks as the top internet dating site in the U.S.A. according to Comscore Mediametrix and Nielsen//NetRatings, and #3 on Hitwise. Egon Smola is the new General Manager at Yahoo! Personals after Anna Zornosa's ~two years as GM. I met with Egon for breakfast in Mountain View for this interview. – Mark Brooks

Egon, congratulations on your new role as GM of Yahoo! Personals. What's your background with Yahoo! Personals?
I've been with Yahoo! Personals for the past 4½ years and what an amazing ride its been. I initially joined to lead international expansion before moving into the lead product management role, where I spent time learning more about our users and translating that insight into a vision and road map. Then I shifted my focus to driving customer acquisition from various channels and increasing customer satisfaction. One of the things we did to increase conversion was tweak our search and browse requirements. Non-registered members must now register and create their own profile before viewing multiple profiles. As a result of all our efforts, the most-often-cited reason why subscribers leave Yahoo! Personals is that they "found someone." Now, in taking the general manager position, I truly feel blessed to have such a strong leadership team in place to continue driving innovation focused on enhancing our customers' experience.

How do you think the social networking industry affects the Internet dating industry?
What we see today are people using social networks to find friends, stay in touch and occasionally meet new people. Online dating services such as Yahoo! Personals have a clear advantage in our value proposition. We provide access to a pre-qualified number of people who are serious about finding a mate. We offer anonymity, safety and security up to the point where the user is willing to reveal his or her personal information to someone else. We capture the relevant information of interest to online daters, and we provide users with the tools to make establishing a relationship efficient and fun. Finally, we charge for our service. In interviews with consumers we found that price is a signal of quality, both of the service and of subscribers to that service. Today, social networking services provide none of these advantages and I think they will be hard pressed to do so in the future.

Do you think in the future we'll see online personals services costing $100 a month or more?
I think the prices we see today, in the $20 to $40 range, is the sweet spot for the market. There will always be an opportunity for premium services that appeal to a very niche segment. What we're focused on is both satisfying our existing customers and appealing to potential users. This requires listening very carefully to the customers and making enhancements to the site that best meet their needs. This is no longer a game where we can look at our customer base as a homogeneous mass. Every dater is unique in their own way and requires a personalized approach to dating. We want to leverage our technology so that different subgroups have different user experiences, but the process is still fun.

What's important for online personals companies to bear in mind to make sure they are still around in 2012?
2012 is a long way off, and just look at how the industry has changed and matured in the past five years alone. The way for any online dating service provider to succeed going forward is by delivering a customer experience that truly delights. It delights by providing profiles that are easy to browse, a search algorithm that hones in on people that are of most interest, and tools that allow members to make contact. Scale is also tremendously important. Good services must offer a large number of potential dates in a geographically constrained area. Anyone who is doing this in a straightforward and honest fashion while providing users with safety and security will still be around in 2012.

You seem to be implying the largest sites will ultimately win the game. Yet there a number of niche dating sites emerging and doing quite well. Why is this?
What we're finding is that online dating has rather low points of entry. There are a lot of niche providers that can break-even. However, because these sites are not generating as much revenue, they are finding it is very hard to drive acquisition or reinvest in their businesses. In addition, some of them are employing tasteless and inappropriate tactics that Yahoo! Personals would simply not employ.

What is Yahoo! Personals doing in regard to Reverse-Search?
What we've invested in most recently is new search technology that allows us to highlight more relevant potential dates then ever before. We've added a number of new search features, two of which are We Match and I Match. I Match is what you refer to as reverse search. You can now search for anyone who is already looking for someone exactly like you. To give an example, if you are a single parent you may limit your search to include people who are specifically interested in people with kids. The We Match functionality is a mutual match. It searches for people who are looking for someone like you, but only if you are looking for someone like them.

Is Yahoo! Personals working with the academic world?
We are benefiting from the relationships that Yahoo! has established with a number of top universities across the country, particularly in the search field. We also have a specific relationship with the University of Berkeley. We initiated a research project that was so interesting that the National Science Foundation actually gave the doctoral student that we're working with a grant.

What features on your site have been the most successful?
This summer we launched new functionality that allows users to add captions to photos. This allows daters to identify the individuals in pictures that could otherwise be misinterpreted. For example, is that man seated next to that woman her brother or her ex-boyfriend? In addition, the captions allow for more context to be added to the photos, drawing attention from other users with similar interests. The photo and captions features made a big difference for our users and we've seen a four-fold increase in the photos that are added to our service. Again, most people are looking for someone else who has posted a photo so it makes a big difference because it opens up new potential dates.

We've also launched a feature called Who's Viewed Me, which tells users who has looked at their profile. Users like this feature because they know people on this list are likely already interested in them. We've also launched Side by Side, which allows users to quickly compare what they are looking for in a mate with characteristics of a particular profile, side by side, in an easy to read chart. At the end of the day, we focus on enabling our daters to make connections in a safe, fun and easy-to-use environment. And we are proud to have achieved the highest customer satisfaction rating among the major online dating service providers!

A Kiss-Off To Online Dating

Posted on November 21, 2007

BUSINESS WEEK — Nov 20 — The era of Web 1.0 is over, online dating is dead. Going on sites like Facebook or MySpace it's like going to a bar with your friends, whereas a dating site is like walking past a bunch of animals in cages at the zoo. According to comScore, the number of people visiting online dating sites dropped 6% in September. Unique visitors to Yahoo Personals and eHarmony fell 21%, Match.com had a 16% drop, and True.com's visitors plummeted 46%. ComScore does show some names like Plentyoffish.com growing, but these are new sites with far smaller user bases. I doubt PlentyofFish will ever get to the size or valuation of a Match.com.

The full article was originally published at BusinessWeek, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: Match had $89.1 million revenue in Q3. That's ~$360 million a year.  PlentyofFish is now making $10 million+ a year. I doubted Markus would ever get into the top 10 when I met him in 2004. I underestimated him. PlentyofFish is #2, Match #4 on the Hitwise USA rankings.  On Comscore USA rankings, Match is #2 and PlentyofFish is #8.  In the UK, Hitwise ranks PlentyofFish.com as the #2 dating site, and Match comes in at #5.  And PlentyofFish comes in at #1 in Canada according to Comscore, with Lavalife at #2 and Match at #13. See the full rankings here. (Disclosure: PlentyofFish is a client of Courtland Brooks)

Yahoo! Personals Clorox Study

Posted on November 1, 2007

Yahoo_personals_logoY! PERSONALS — Nov 1 — A study with Yahoo! Personals and Clorox found that 58% of Y! Personals respondents considered cleaning compatibility to be as important as having a shared interest. ~32% found that a person's domestic cleaning habits are very important or a deal-breaker when it comes to selecting a partner. More people would rather date a germ freak (65%) than a complete slob (35%). Most surprisingly, responses did not vary by gender.

Yahoo! Advised To Break Up

Posted on October 9, 2007

YahooINTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE — Oct 8 — A Sanford C. Bernstein analyst estimated the combined value of Yahoo!’s display advertising, search engine, and subscriptions business at $39 a share. Radical actions – like outsourcing services, cutting employees, and revamping advertising – could raise shares to $45, whereas a stay-the-course strategy would likely drop them to $25.

The full article was originally published at International Herald Tribune, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: Yahoo Personals is doing direct ad buys on properties other than Yahoo, and has become bolder with it's business development. Should it come out from underneath its mothers wing, completely. Your comments please.

Yahoo! Personals Settles Class Action Suit

Posted on August 28, 2007

YahoopersonalslogoOPW — Aug 28 — Yahoo! Personals has settled Robert Anthony vs Yahoo Inc. (reported on by AP, and Reuters in Nov. '06). This is the date baiting case, you might recall, which Yahoo! Personals has vigorously denied from day one. Rather than draw things out, Yahoo has settled.  In short: "Yahoo! does not believe it has done anything wrong and continues to deny all claims and allegations of wrongdoing asserted in the case, but came to an agreement with the Plaintiff to ensure it could focus on key priorities for the company."

Here's Yahoo!'s Statement and Settlement: Yahoo! denies the claims in the suit but agreed to pursue a settlement to avoid long litigation that likely would have interrupted our focus: building a great dating service. Our efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment are rigorous and are constantly improving:

  • We set high standards through a code of conduct to which customers must agree and which requires that they be truthful;
  • We invest in customer service and technology tools that help us identify and reject false profiles;
  • We review all profile elements; and
  • We review all complaints and respond to identified problems.

(a) Yahoo! will maintain the "Report a Complaint" link on the profile detail pages.
(b) Profiles that have been inactive for a period of 120 days will be rendered unsearchable.
(c) When a user cancels their subscription, a screen will be presented giving them the option to delete the profile, render it unsearchable or keep the profile active. If the user makes no selection, the profile will automatically be deactivated.
(d) Yahoo! will maintain mechanisms to detect duplicate photos, abusive language and the revealing of improper personal information.
(e) Additional Terms of Service will be updated to inform users that that they may see profiles or other content which they feel were created by third parties, contrary to obligations in the applicable terms of services, guidelines and code of conduct, for purposes other than dating, including spam and commercial profiles.
(f) Yahoo! will modify its Additional Terms of Service to include disclosures regarding searchable Yahoo!-created test profiles that may be used when necessary to ensure service quality. The modifications will disclose how searchable test profiles, if any, are designated so that they are readily identifiable to users.

Mark Brooks: All internet dating sites are susceptible to cheats.  The upper echelon sites put many measures in place to filter out the negative elements.  Yahoo is also awarding up to $35 back to paid subscribers (from 10/1/04-8/3/07) who submit a claims form. All such members are being emailed. Here's a copy of the settlement.

The Many Faces Of Online Dating

Posted on August 3, 2007

ComscoreTECHNEWSWORLD — August 2 — The U.S. online dating market will reach $932 million in 2011, according to JupiterResearch. More than 20 million Internet users visited such a site last December, reported comScore, with the top destinations being Yahoo! Personals, Match.com, True.com, Spark Networks and Singlesnet.com. But, mainstream dating site memberships are stagnating or, in some cases, shrinking. The proportion of paying customers (5%) has stayed the same over the last five years, according to Jupiter. Furthermore, only 10% of Internet users visited an online dating site in 2006 — a decrease from 16% in 2005 and 21% in 2002. Specialized dating sites, as a result, are increasing in numbers. It is speculated, though, they they too must keep evolving to prevent stagnation. FULL ARTICLE @ TECH NEWS WORLD

Hitwise – Yahoo Personals And PlentyofFish Up, TRUE Down

Posted on July 12, 2007

Hitwise_logo_2OPW — July 12 — TRUE was #1 all year through May, when it moved to #2, now it's #6 for June. TRUE pulled the plug on ad spends and CPA commissions. Word is they're concentrating on their most profitable ad spends and reeling in profits. Singlesnet holds on to its #1 position and Yahoo Personals takes TRUE's #2 position.  PlentyofFish moves up again, to the #3 rank. HotorNot moves down one spot to #10. – Mark Brooks
