How Match Found Love Among Boomers

Posted on January 29, 2007

Matchcom_18_8WSJ — Jan 27 — Match has been reaching out to singles over 50 and divorcées, pitching itself as a destination for mainstream daters who want serious relationships. Its TV ads feature a 71-year-old with the user name DanishBeauty22. Although Match made up less than 5% of IAC's $6.5 billion in sales over the past 12 months, it contributed more than 10% of the company's $464 million in operating profit. In the past two years, Match has boosted the number of paying customers by a third. At Match, 23% of subscribers are over 50, more than double the number two years ago. Yahoo Personals has seen double-digit growth in the number of users over 50 in the past two years, thanks in part to a new service that provides extra control, privacy, and security. eHarmony's fastest-growing age group last year was the over-50 segment. CEO, Mr. Safka asked his staff to check the behavior of older daters on the site and to pinpoint their difficulties in using it. For example, many were stopped cold while filling out their online profile by the fourth question, which asked their views on body art and piercings. Match developed a variety of one-click buttons: "How It Works" to help new users navigate the site, "See More Like Him/Her" to help users find other candidates that might catch their eye, and most important, a "No Thanks" button to ease the awkwardness of turning down electronic suitors. Mrs. Williams likes Match's "Connections" button, which takes her to a set of pictures of the men with whom she corresponds. Match hired "Dr. Phil." Match is policed by a staff of 12, who review each profile before it is posted, removing explicit photos and working to keep out prostitutes, financial schemers, agencies offering foreign brides, and liars.

Mr. Safka is also trying to repeat his stateside success internationally, challenging Match's chief international rival, Meetic, which has 80% of the French market and attracts young daters with sexy, fast-paced ads. Based on its experience in the U.S., Match is aiming at over-40s seeking someone to "share life's journey," not younger ones looking for hookups.

Mark Brooks: Match is wringing more money from each customer, targeting the users that are more likely to be paying customers, and expanding abroad. A winning combination for revenues and the bottom line. They have also just started charging for MatchTalk and are testing different pricepoints.

Digital Matchmakers Get Down to Business

Posted on January 18, 2007

Logo2007_6MIAMI HERALD — Jan 16 — The online dating industry needs to start stealing tricks from younger and nimbler websites. That seemed to be the message floating through the hallways at iDate, the annual conference of the Internet dating industry. 350 participants were at the iDate (and Social Networking Conference). Dating sites (think Yahoo Personals and Match.com) are seeing users poached by social networking sites. While those sites are not specifically designed to find a date, that is how they are being used, said Michael Jones, CEO of Userplane. ''Traditional online dating sites are feeling the pinch,'' he said. Of the Top 10 dating sites in the United States, seven saw a declining number of unique visitors throughout 2006, according to Nielsen//NetRatings. At the same time MySpace overtook Yahoo as the world's busiest website. But the poison is the antidote, said Jones. By stealing pickup lines from social networking competitors — such as allowing users to link to their MySpace profile or upload slide-shows from sites such as Flicker and Rockyou — the industry can woo back admirers. Just a few years ago, anyone with a server, a black book and the verve could launch an online dating site, said Mark Brooks, the publisher of Online Personals Watch. Now the market is crowded and competitive, and the only hope for newcomers is to generate heaps of buzz and tap unexplored niches. Or, as Brooks sums it up: "Word of mouth marketing and differentiate — or die.'' Date.com CEO Meir Strahlberg said he didn't see any need for a radical reinvention to keep up with the MySpaces of the world.

Mark Brooks: iDate2007 was hands down the best internet dating conference yet. I felt there was more energy at this conference than last year. The halls were full of top level business schmoozing. The Royal Palm Hotel was more expensive but far more comfortable than last year. Worth the extra, and the location was perfect. It was walking distance to the convention center, and right on the beach. The convention center was a higher standard venue in many ways but we need to change the room orientation next year. Wide rooms work better than long rooms. The keynote presentations were packed out and the multi track system worked well. However, next year it would be great to have a distinct social networking track and a distinct internet dating track. That would encourage greater SNS participation and 500+ attendees. I think 75% of the attendees were dating focused this year. We'll see more social networking interest at the July conference in California. Your comments please…

National Break-Up Season Has Arrived

Posted on January 12, 2007

Yahoopersonalslogo_1BUSINESS WIRE — Jan 11 — Valentine's Day is just over a month away but according to new research from Yahoo! Personals we are now in National Break-Up Season. The period between the December holidays and Valentine's Day when people are more than twice as likely to think about breaking up than at any other time of the year. "'Find a new love' is up there with 'lose weight' and 'save more money' as a New Year's resolution," said Anna Zornosa, GM, Yahoo! Personals. The primary reasons leading to a break-up were not having a shared view of the future with a partner (48%) and feeling unfulfilled or in a rut (41%). Yahoo! Personals has created a Survival Guide offering advice on how to make a break-up less painful for everyone.

Mark Brooks: This is a great example of joint P.R. and word of mouth marketing initiative. I'm looking forward to see what Yahoo Personals does this season with their relationship with Starbucks.

Which Dating Sites Convert the Best?

Posted on January 3, 2007

OPW — Jan 2 — Online Personals Watch is for online personals marketing managers and executives to stay ahead of the news, and for the press to research the industry. It's not really designed for end users. Having said that, I make a few bucks from affiliate text links. $5k last year. Not too shabby. I thought I'd share the conversion numbers with you, for open discussion. I'm listing companies with which I had more than 1000 click throughs. I'm told affiliates will usually send an affiliate program 300 clicks before drawing initial conclusions on conversions. Here's the rankings drawn from stats for January 1st 2005, through December 25th 2006.  I'll redo them for a smaller date range later this quarter.

Dating site Affiliate System Total Commission Total Uniques Income per Unique
#1 PerfectMatch Commission Junction   $899 2567    35c
#2 SexSearch In House   $1,580 4690    34c
#3 TRUE Commission Junction*   $1,459 5626    26c
#4 AdultFriendFinder In House   $1,523 6144    25c
#5 Yahoo Personals Commission Junction   $1,595 6780    24c
#6 eHarmony Commission Junction   $502 3536    14.2c
#7 American Singles Commission Junction   $285 3591    7.9c
#8 Match Link Share**   $503 4887    7.7c
#9 Cupid Direct Track   $210 3334    5c
#10 Joint: Webdate
and Love Access
Both In House   $0 2923/1916    0c

  * I switched out to TRUE under Primaryads.com and they are paying out a little better.
** I've not had a good experience with LinkShare.

All the sites pay out slightly differently.  Where I had an option, I opted to be paid by % of revenue generated. I've focused on Dollars per Unique for this comparison.  If you want the full spreadsheet, email me at mark@onlinepersonalswatch.com and I'll send you the stats including the number of registrants, paying members, revenue and additional ratios. Your comments please…

The Real Top Dating Sites

Posted on December 29, 2006

COMPETE — Dec 28 — Ranking online dating sites purely on visitor traffic is flawed; membership is a prerequisite to use the services, and member activity is the foundation of successful matchmaking. Looking at how members use a site gives a clearer picture of the online dating landscape, and changes rankings dramatically. Member visits start to reveal actual engagement.

Yahoo Personals grabbed the top rank. While TRUE placed 2nd in visitors, its 8th rank in member logins indicates that much of this traffic came from TRUE's intense advertising efforts on youth oriented social networking sites. In addition True members represented a mere 8% of total visitors. Plentyoffish.com showed that free services can be successful; 9th in terms of visitors, the site leapt to 5th in member interaction. More importantly, it was one of 5 sites with more than 10 million member visits, putting it in a class with much higher trafficked sites and besting its next competitor by a multiple of 2x.

Yahoo Upgrades Personals

Posted on December 20, 2006

YahoopersonalslogoTECH CRUNCH — Dec 20 — Yahoo Personals has a new feature called Quick View, designed to let users scan for potential mates more quickly. Instead of scrolling up and down to view profile information, members can simply select from fifteen different traits (non-smoker, enjoys traveling, etc.) and call them date "makers" or "breakers." They can then view profiles organized by whether or not they include a deal breaker. It's a good way to weed out those undesirables more quickly. FULL ARTICLE @ TECH CRUNCH
