Yahoo! Personals UK pinpoints ‘National Break-up Day’

Posted on June 30, 2006

Yahoo_personalsPR WEEK UK — June 29 — With approximately 1,000 online dating agencies in the UK, many of which boast sponsorship deals and hefty advertising budgets, Yahoo! Personals was struggling to get noticed. Yahoo! appointed Cohn & Wolfe to build brand awareness and attract a bigger share of the six million Britons who use online dating services. The agency worked with research company Skopos to identify attitudes to relationships and 'the day they are most likely to end'. It discovered that 12 January was the most likely day for couples to split, and named it National Break-up Day. Hazel Thompson, head of UK PR at Yahoo! UK and Ireland, says the campaign was 'a huge success for us'.

Mark Brooks: Match now powers Yahoo Personals UK.

Reunion.com and Yahoo! Personals ‘Get Hitched’

Posted on May 11, 2006

Yahoo_8BUSINESS WIRE — May 10 — Yahoo! Personals and Reunion.com (nearly 25 million users) are increasing their distribution and marketing channels and offering content to users. Reunion.com members who are looking for past connections and focused on dating will be directed to Yahoo! Personals. Yahoo! Personals' users will be directed to Reunion.com to find, reconnect and stay in touch. "Yahoo! is constantly looking for strategic and creative ways to get our services in front of the right consumers," said Anna Zornosa, GM for Yahoo! Personals.

Mark Brooks: Smart move. Yahoo Personals also recently teamed up with Starbucks for a campaign over Valentines. Heck, who wouldn't want to team up with Yahoo. It's a great brand that can offer some great branding affinity (rub-off) to other top levels brands.

SMS Text Search Smackdown

Posted on April 19, 2006

Yahoomobile_1MEDIA POST — Apr 17 — Keith and I are standing on the corner of 4th Ave and 13th Street. Our destination is Pop, a lounge located right across the street. We decide to have a an SMS search contest. (You simply send an SMS text query to either Google 46645 or Yahoo 92466). Google query: "pop new york." Yahoo query: "pop 10011," his zip code. In a quick jab, Keith shows me his screen, complete with the right address, cross-street and link a Yahoo map.  Google sends me a listing for a different establishment: Pop Burger, located clear across town.

Mark Brooks: Utilities like this help drive user sophistication.  SMS search is a great starting point.

Yahoo Social Networking Riff

Posted on April 12, 2006

Yahoo_3Apr 9 — Watch for Yahoo! to increase its investment in enabling social networks. So what is the future of social networking likely to look like? One login, many networks, with an individual's profile altered for each network. The social networking killer app will be the tools for users to create their own myspaces that can connect (with different networks) easily and fluidly and CONTROLABLY through a single interface.

The full article was originally published at Internet Search Engine Database, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: Yahoo wants to drive more eyeballs and loyalty to it's social networking products.  It has considered making online dating free, but has understood the difference in nature between internet dating and social networking.  They are different animals and never the twain shall meet. Let's take this single login idea one step further.  The central tenet of social networks is to help people maintain contact and communicate with friends…and discover new ones.  I'd like to see a desktop app that aces Outlook and helps me connect into my social networks.  I think this is a long way off, but this is the killer app.

Perils of Online Dating Prompt Safety Efforts

Posted on March 22, 2006

Myspacecom_3REUTERS — Mar 21 — Josie Brown never had a chance against her 6-foot-6-inch killer.  John Gaumer, confessed and led Baltimore County police to Brown's body on February 7, listed his height and other attributes in his quest for dates on MySpace.com.  "There are millions of people we're dealing with here and somehow people think they are all preachers," said Paul Falzone, CEO of Together Dating, a brick-and-mortar company that performs background checks on all members. Falzone says background checks result in 10% of applicants being rejected.  For most of the 40 million people using Internet sites for dating and socializing each month, a disastrous 15 minutes over coffee at Starbucks is the worst they will suffer.  Only a small percentage of "intimate partner violence" — nearly 700,000 such incidents were reported to the U.S. Dept of Justice in 2001 — originate from Internet dating, according to Mark Brooks, editor of Online Personals Watch, which monitors the dating industry.  "To think a felon could find a victim, especially for a heinous crime, gives me the heebie-jeebies. I do all I can do to prevent that," said Herb Vest, TRUE.com CEO.  So far, California, Florida, Texas and Michigan have considered (background checks) legislation.  Yahoo! and Match.com, the industry leaders with 6 million and 15 million monthly visitors respectively, continually stress dating safety.  "The Internet has its dark side and they are not doing everything they can to keep sexual predators and gold diggers off these sites. If you don't police yourselves, the government will come in and police you," said Michigan state Sen. Alan Cropsey.  "There are other ways to get to who that person is, rather than have the government ram a business model down your throat," said Abe Smilowitz, CEO of Webdate.  Webdate uses real-time video as a safety measure, allowing prospective dates to chat and get a look at each other via Webcams.  Companies like Safedate and Honestyonline are springing up to run background checks for individuals. According to Dr. John Gray, education is the solution.  "The warning signs often come out right away. Beware of someone who can solve all your problems or who comes on really strong," said Gray.

Best Way to Date: Collaborate?

Posted on March 20, 2006

collaboradate  WIRED NEWS — Mar 17 — Collaboradate does for online dating what Trillian does for instant messaging: It combines multiple services so you can manage everything from one place.  When you create your Collaboradate profile, you enter the user names you registered at other dating and social networking sites. Then when someone searches Collaboradate and finds you, she can click through each site on your list to view your dating profiles.  If the external dating site requires membership to view profiles, she'll have to sign in. But if it doesn't — like Yahoo Personals, Friendster and MySpace — she can see your page immediately.  Andy believes the subscription model for dating is doomed, and suggests that Collaboradate will be a positive force for online dating as a whole.

The full article was originally published at Wired News, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: Paid subscriptions help sort out the more committed online daters.  When you're paying $20-$50 a month, your attention is pretty much ensured.  I'd like to see more sites where ONLY paid members are visible and can play.

It’s Not Just Your Kid’s Internet: Online Dating Appeals to More Mature

Posted on March 16, 2006

Matchcom_15ASSOCIATED PRESS — Mar 15 — The main reason more mature singles are going online for love is simple: more widespread access to the Internet, hence more familiarity with online dating. And dating sites are catering to older members. Yahoo Personals, for example, has an advice column for users over 50.  Another reason: "Baby boomers are seeing their children use online dating, and watching their success at finding mates," says Rochelle Adams, spokesperson for Yahoo Personals. Match.com says boomers (age 45-59) are its fastest growing segment — they've increased by 350 percent since 2000, now numbering 1.7 million. Spokesperson Kristin Kelly says older users tend to be much clearer and more realistic about what they want: "There's no substitute for the wisdom gained with age."  FULL ARTICLE @ TMC NET
