Valentine’s Day Is A Lonely Time For Dating Apps

Posted on February 5, 2015

Zoosk smart pickSF BUSINESS TIMES – Feb 4 – Early February is not a strong month for looking for a partner online, said Dawoon Kang, co-founder of Coffee Meets Bagel. "Those that aren't matched up usually wait until after the holiday." Zoosk's internal numbers back that up. Last year, there were 16% more messages sent on Zoosk in the two weeks following Valentine's Day compared to the two weeks before. However, the big day itself had the least profile views of any day in February 2014.

Zoosk Emphasizes Like, Rather Than Love In Its New Campaign

Posted on November 6, 2014

NY TIMES – Nov 5 - Zoosk is introducing an advertising campaign that makes no assertions about marriage, or even love. Rather, the campaign is based on the slogan “First Comes Like,” intended to highlight the moments when daters discover each other’s qualities.

Mark Brooks: Meetic is one of Europe's leading dating services (owned by IAC) and its founder took the same approach. They said, they promise a date, but not love. They can't. That's too high and lofty a promise surely. It doesn't work to promise love in Europe. But I think in the USA, where we're more bullish and explicit about love, we can get away making such aspirational promises with our services. This is an area where Europe is a little less forgiving in general. Do you agree? Whats your thoughts? Do you think I'm blowing smoke? Then please comment? 🙂

Mark Brooks: Remember Dan Slaters book, Love In The Time Of Algorithms. Well, it got renamed to Data, A Love Story. Personally, I don't think users give two hoots about algorithms and data. These words are a huge turn off to users actually. What they care about is insight. And that's what Zoosk, and the rest of the industry, would do well to serve up more of. I applaud this new feature from Zoosk. So you have data, and algorithms, but users don't care until you show them what you can do with it!  :-)

Zoosk IPO: Offering Price Is Everything

Posted on October 16, 2014

Zoosk logo new Dec 13SEEKING ALPHA – Oct 16 – Despite a great product, the large marketing expenses (72% of revenue in fiscal 2013) and expected premium valuation of $8-$16 raise investing concerns. The question: Is any price in that range a good incentive to purchase shares, or could this be a short candidate once it goes public? Acquisition offers may be unlikely with limited IP and a game like user experience similar to OkCupid or Tinder, specifically if the company is priced at a premium in its IPO.
