Zoosk Resets Some User Accounts Following Password Dump

Posted on March 12, 2013

Zoosk passwordsARS TECHNICA – March 12 – Zoosk.com is requiring some users to reset their passwords. The move comes after someone published a list cryptographically protected passcodes that may have been used by subscribers to the website.
A small but statistically significant percentage of the 29-million-strong password list contained the word "zoosk," an indication that at least some of the credentials may have originated with the dating site. Jeremi Gosney, a password expert at Stricture Consulting Group, said he cracked ~90% of the passwords and found ~3K had links to Zoosk. The cracked passcodes included phrases such as "logmein2zoosk," "zoosk password," "myzooskpass," "@zoosk," "zoosk4me," "ilovezoosk," "flirtzoosk," "zooskmail."

Outsourcing The Algorithm Of Love To Online Dating

Posted on February 14, 2013

Ffn logoFORTUNE MAGAZINE – Feb 14 – There are thousands of sites out there, many with an incredible degree of specificity in their target audience. The personals sites for The Onion and Salon are both powered by a service called FastCupid. That company is a property of FriendFinder Network. FriendFinder Networks, formerly called Penthouse Media Group, operates ~40K sites. FriendFinder does not mix together all the profiles of all its branded sites. Because people from BigChurch.com for Christian singles for example, may not get along with those from another, say, Bondage.com. Many established online dating operators eschew the practice altogether, but it's fairly common, particularly in the U.K. where it's standard practice. Today, four companies control 77% of the $1.22 billion online dating market, according to research from IBISWorld. IAC controls 41% of the market, eHarmony is next, with 23.5%, in third place is Zoosk at 7.7%, followed by Spark Networks at 4.9%. Despite the competitive advantage conferred by niche markets, big data-driven dating clearinghouses may be the way of the future for much of the online dating industry. "Strategically, bigger is best," says Brooks, industry analyst and editor of Online Personals Watch. "If you consider what would be the perfect model for an Internet dating site, in theory it would have all the people in the world who are single on it, and you could find your perfect match within a day's work." A single major U.S. service that controls more than 50% of market share is "inevitable," Brooks says. In theory at least, a bigger pool means more happy matches, even if they're from unlikely sources. Data confirms: "It's kind of a waste of time anyway asking people what they want anyway," Brooks says. "Because they don't really know."

Has Internet Dating Made People More Disposable?

Posted on January 3, 2013

First datesTHE ATLANTIC – Jan 3 – Most of the online dating CEO's agree that the rise of online dating will mean an overall decrease in commitment. “The future will see better relationships but more divorce,” predicts Dan Winchester, the founder of a free UK dating site. “Historically,” says Greg Blatt, the CEO of Match.com’s parent company, “relationships have been billed as ‘hard’ because, commitment has been the goal. You could say online dating is simply changing people’s ideas about whether commitment itself is a life value.” “I think divorce rates will increase as life in general becomes more real-time,” says Niccolò Formai, the head of social-media marketing at Badoo. “Societal values always lose out,” says Noel Biderman, the founder of AshleyMadison. “Premarital sex used to be taboo,” explains Biderman. “So women would become miserable in marriages, because they wouldn’t know any better. But today, more people have had failed relationships, recovered, moved on, and found happiness. Even at eHarmony, Gian Gonzaga, the site’s relationship psychologist, acknowledges that commitment is at odds with technology. “You could say online dating allows people to get into relationships, learn things, and ultimately make a better selection,” says Gonzaga. “But you could also easily see a world in which online dating leads to people leaving relationships the moment they’re not working—an overall weakening of commitment.

In 2011, Mark Brooks, a consultant to online-dating companies, published the results of an industry survey titled “How Has Internet Dating Changed Society?” The survey responses, from 39 executives, produced the following conclusions: “Internet dating has made people more disposable, and may be partly responsible for a rise in the divorce rates.” “Low quality, unhappy and unsatisfying marriages are being destroyed as people drift to Internet dating sites.” “Internet dating has helped people of all ages realize that there’s no need to settle for a mediocre relationship.”

Alex Mehr, a co-founder of Zoosk, disagrees. “Online dating only removes a barrier to meeting,” says Mehr. Surely personality will play a role in the way anyone behaves in the realm of online dating, particularly when it comes to commitment and promiscuity.
