The Internet Dating Conference Agenda :: My Top Three Picks!
OPW – Dec 22 – iDate Miami is happening January 25-26. Are you going? The top people in the dating business will be there. Marc tells me there's a great representation from senior management this year. That's good. So here's my top picks from the agenda. Here's the sessions I'll definitely be sitting in on and taking notes on.
- Geoff Cook, the CEO of publicly traded company MeetMe is speaking first on the 25th. His company is doing well, and they bought the hallmark early mobile dating service Skout this year. Amazing. Got to see that. They're going from strength to strength and their stock is way up. Doubled this year!
- The marketing director for Zoosk is giving us his thoughts on marketing to a relationship on mobile. Great! Zoosk gets 20 million hits a month on their website, and way more on mobile. They're doing well again. Why? How? What's next? Let's find out.
- I'm interviewing the CEO of Hinge. Justin McLeod is going to give us insights on mobile dating for the people looking for meaningful relationships. i.e., the other end of the market to Tinder. Does it work? How's he doing it? I'll also be visiting Justin's office in NYC the week prior. Watch OPW. I'll run a video review on OPW prior to my iDate interview with Justin.
Also, Brandon Wade is speaking. He's talking about how he went from niche to mainstream. We're talking SeekingArrangement here. Highly controversial of course. What's inside this man's brain? What's he going to do next? I certainly will be listening in and asking some tough questions.
So there we have it, and here's the agenda in full. Hope to see you there. This will be the 41st iDate that I'm speaking at! Prices go up December 23rd so best to pick up your tix now, so you can write them off in this tax year. ;-)

Kelly Steckelberg Has Fallen In Love With Creating Opportunity At Zoosk
SBN ONLINE – Sep 1 – Kelly Steckelberg didn't grow up with aspirations to become a CEO. She has a background in finance and accounting and hoped to one day be a CFO at a public company. She was named CEO of Zoosk in Dec 2014. "It was certainly a stretch and I've learned a ton in the last year and a half", she said. "One of the things I promoted is to be transparent," Steckelberg says. "We're going to be transparent about financial results and the issues that we face." As she looks to the future, Zoosk is both confident and curious about what the years ahead will bring to Zoosk and the world of online dating. She is confident the number of people who do online dating will only continue to grow.

How Marketers Changed Online Dating
MARKETING NEWS – June 2 – No dating site has found the magic method of creating a love connection. "This is a total virgin science," said Mark Brooks who runs Courtland Brooks, an agency that works with online dating companies. There are 2,5K – 8K online dating platforms worldwide. While it's growing, the industry is "sort of being squished," with the majority of growth seen at large businesses and smaller apps, leaving a large middle section open, Brooks says. According to Brooks, Tinder's explosive popularity changed the face of internet dating. The app grew from college campuses, Brooks says, as the company used a marketing program to entice "campus connectors" to spread the word. "It doesn't take much," he said. "It's such a hotbed on campuses that you can get these things to take off on campus with the right story and the right product. Tinder is a very, very compelling product. It's one of the few dating apps that's truly sharable. For some reason, apps are more sharable in online dating. You wouldn't generally talk about Match, but on Tinder, you'd just show it around and talk about the experience." How do these dating platforms grow? Brooks says the traditional way is via pay-per-click ads and paid acquisition. Companies with more money are able to advertise on TV. Grant Langston, eHarmony's VP of brand marketing refers to TV as eHarmony's "magic formula". Now, TV accounts for ~70% of eHarmony's lead generation. For Zoosk, Facebook mobile app is one of the most successful distribution outlets. The conversion rate for Facebook mobile, from click to install, is ~5% and 10%. Years ago, Brooks says he predicted that "we'd go Star Trek" in online dating, meaning he foresaw the impending mobile boom. In his recent research, he found that 73% of all visitors to dating services are on mobile devices. Brooks believes larger screens, five-to-six inches, will come into prominence in the near future. Users want larger pictures for their online dating needs and Brooks says larger phones and small tablets will serve that need. After that, he believes wearable technology will play a larger role in the industry. People often tell white lies on their dating profiles, but Brooks says sites may be able to take advantage of a customer's FitBit data by matching people who run seven miles per day. Online dating is here to stay with little chance of evanesce. Brooks notes that the availability of people, within the click of a button, has created an addictive element.
