When Tall and Handsome Turns out Short and Pudgy

Posted on August 2, 2006

CHICAGO TRIBUNE — July 30 — Lawmakers and Web sites clashing over legislative proposals to keep clients from being scammed. "You guys can either be part of the solution or feel like you're victims of someone taking over your business," Florida state Rep. Kevin Ambler told industry insiders at a conference in SanFrancisco this month. "But this is going to come … like a freight train roaring down the track."  New York already has passed a consumer statute to regulate dating sites. A half-dozen other states–including Illinois–are considering similar laws to require matchmaking services to conduct criminal background checks, or at least post a notice alerting clients that they are on their own.  Eric Straus of Cupid.com stated: "Government is sticking its nose where it doesn't belong."  Still, during the last year, Yahoo Personals and Match.com were sued for allegedly posting phony profiles and using "date bait"–sending employees to act as members–to keep subscribers from bolting. While no background checks can be foolproof, they can go a long way to deterring scammers, supporters say. Some say the dangers are exaggerated and that the response is an overreaction. Others say that a basic check–about $1.50 each–would be inadequate, plagued by out-of-date information and riddled with inaccuracies. A first-rate search, on the other hand, would be more expensive.

Mark Brooks: Truedater.com allows singles to enter the member id's of online daters after a date, give feedback on them, and verify that they represent themselves accurately in their profile.

Mobile Dating Proving a Hit

Posted on August 2, 2006

NEWS — July 20 — Mobile dating applications are proving to be amongst the most profitable data services for mobile operators according to SmartTrust and application developer Landmat. Landmat monitored service usage across two European and one Asian operator for a period of 12 months. Surprisingly, although the majority of users were 25 or under, more than 50% of revenue actually came from users over 25 years of age, with those over 30 representing the most profitable user group.

Mark Brooks: Webdate has a great mobile service that is live on Sprint and due to go live on other major services shortly.  Match is working on a downloadable mobile phone dating app.  You'll have to go to Japan to see it though.

Gather.com to Launch Online, Cable Advertising Campaign

Posted on August 2, 2006

Logo_gatherMARKETING VOX — July 31 — Boston-based Gather.com, which gives its writers a share of ad revenue, is launching its first major advertising campaign this week, running ads online and on cable networks. Three spots cover Iraq, the environment and immigration. Each begins with a black screen and audio, and ends with the tagline: "Join the conversation." In the "Iraq" ad, viewers will hear soldiers' voices, then an explosion, and will then see "Iraq" on the blank screen as the voiceover says, "Join the conversation at Gather.com." Gather.com is aimed at an older demographic.

San Francisco iDate Photos

Posted on August 2, 2006

Idate_1OPW — Aug 2 — The photos from the San Francisco Internet Dating Conference in July are live at idate2006.com.  Here’s the link.  This specialty conference covered background checks and payments.  I gave the keynote and suggested some alternatives to background checks.  Representative Kevin Ambler gave as good an argument for background checks legislation as I’ve heard yet, which was then debated on the final panel.  As usual the lunches were a hive of activity and networking and the media were in attendance.  The event was visited by SF Chronicle, local TV and others.  Amsterdam is next.  See you there in September. – Mark Brooks

Boomer’s Social Web Site Comes With Death Alerts

Posted on August 2, 2006

EonsREUTERS — July 31 — A social networking Web site for Americans aged 50-plus went live on Monday complete with an online obituary database that sends out alerts when someone you may know dies. The founder of Internet job site Monster.com, Jeff Taylor, launched Eons.com, a similar site to the popular online teen hang-outs MySpace or Facebook for the 50-plus crowd complete with interactive games to build brain strength, news on entertainment and hobbies for older people, a personalized longevity calculator and tips to live longer.

Mark Brooks: Social networking is splintering into a myriad of niche sites. The big sites will continue to control 95% of the market, but in just the same way singles join 2 or 3 dating sites, social networking users will also join 2 or 3 social networks.

PlentyofFish Speed Dating Record Attempt a Success

Posted on August 1, 2006

PofOPW — July 31 — On July 22nd PlentyofFish attempted to establish a world record for the largest speed dating event held under one roof. I asked Markus how the event went.  It was a success. Markus said, "the hosts will have the count in the next few days, they have to count all the registrations.  Someone at the door counted 251 couples holding hands and leaving at the end of the night. We had too many women so they had to turn a few away." The Guinness world record event rules were incredibly stringent. The whole event had to run like clockwork. Here are the pictures from the event. What’s even more amazing is the teamwork that was required to bring the event together. It was all completed by volunteers. PlentyofFish is the last remaining, absolutely, really, no REALLY, completely free internet dating site. (Others such as OKcupid are mostly free but still have membership options with added features available for a few bucks a month).  It continues to move up the internet dating site rankings and is currently ranked #2 in Canada (Comscore) and #6 in USA (Hitwise). – Mark Brooks

videMobile Dating Gaining Popularity

Posted on August 1, 2006

OPW — July 31 — Here’s a Fox News New York segment on mobile dating that I helped out with. Sprint and Webdate are featured. Users of mobile phone dating services are younger than online dating users, and they’re more likely to be of a minority race. There will be a conference in Amsterdam on 25th-26th September which will cover the European online dating industry and mobile dating. See idate2006.com – Mark Brooks

Social Network Sites Face US Ban

Posted on August 1, 2006

ChildrenBBC NEWS — July 31 — Many schools have already banned social network sites. The Deleting Online Predators Act tries to limit the access paedophiles have to social networking sites primarily at schools and libraries. The act has already been approved by a large majority in the House of Representatives on 26 July. Critics say the act is too broad and could mean a huge number of websites are cut off from users.  MySpace, Bebo, Facebook, Friendster and many others count large numbers of children among their users. The DOPA Act leaves the final definition of what counts as a social networking site to the FCC.  Some MySpace users have created an online 'Save your Space' petition and aims to gather more than one million signatures in a month. FULL ARTICLE @ BBC NEWS

Mark Brooks: Too little, too late. MySpace has been laying low on this subject. Looks like the 'head in the sand' approach didn't work. Constant press attention has morphed into political attention and now into legislation that looks like it will pass. I was surprised the new MySpace Chief Safety Officer didn't show up at the recent San Francisco Internet Dating Convention that was focused on background checks and safety. This bill is getting ramrodded through to the Senate and is a political hot potato.  Child safety…who's going to vote against that? What repercussions will the rest of the online personals industry need to deal with in the coming years? Online personals safety is now front forward and on the minds of a lot of politicians. I can see this political attention manifesting. The State Attorney Generals will be on the prowl next. DOPA will be useful only in the short term (3-5 years). Kids use cell phones. Cell phones have internet access. Will cell phones be blocked next? Hey, check out helio.com for MySpace enabled sexy cell phones. MySpace has already circumnavigated school and library computers. Friendster Patent on Linking

Posted on August 1, 2006

Friendster_logo_5WSJ.COM — July 27 — Friendster could wind up making enemies among its peers. Last month it was awarded a patent related to searching for people online based on their relationships and it expects another patent to come through soon that covers technology that lets users upload their own content, like photos, onto a friend's page. "We want to protect our intellectual property," says Kent Lindstrom, Friendster's president. "We're evaluating what we should do. The attorneys we've talked to say the patent is very strong." Lawyers are encouraging Friendster to consider "taking people out from a litigation standpoint." But he says he is also weighing less extreme approaches, like asking for patent-licensing fees or not taking any legal action at all.  Friendster is overhauling its management team and has modified its strategy.

The full article was originally published at WSJ, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: I'm looking forward to seeing Friendster make a comeback with Kent at the helm. Kent was one of the original investors and earliest advisor to Jonathan, from when he was still working out of his apartment.
