Can MySpace Pull in Revenue Rast Enough for Rupert?

Posted on April 6, 2007

Myspace_2 BUSINESS WEEK — Apr 5 — Last year MySpace users called up 31.5 billion unique page views per month and yet racked up a paltry $90 million in ad sales. This year MySpace could generate $271 million according to Merrill Lynch & Co. analyst Jessica Reif Cohen. Though page views were up 79% last month over the previous year, growth is slowing. Plus MySpace is aging: 41% of the traffic comes from people over 35 vs. 35% a year ago according to Hitwise.

IwantU.com to Deliver Free Dating Number Service

Posted on April 6, 2007

IwantuPR NEWSWIRE — April 5 — IwantU.com will deliver free dating phone numbers to their 7 million members. Active members of IwantU.com will be able to contact each other via CallDigits.com. The dating phone number will ring to any phone of the member's choice and ensures privacy while enhancing the dating experience. The basic service which includes voicemail will be provided free of charge. Members may choose to upgrade to local phone numbers throughout the US and Canada. According to Keith Bussey of IwantU.com, "The phone is a natural part of the dating experience and our members will be able to enhance their online dating experience like no other service. We are the first online dating service to allow our members to actually talk to each other as part of the online dating experience."

Mark Brooks: Voice is getting a foothold in the online personals world, at last. Match launched MatchTalk powered by Jangl first. I've guided Vumber to what I think is the best service for singles. They can not only forward calls, but they can call out from their Vumber on any phone, anytime, anywhere.

Lying In Your Profile

Posted on April 4, 2007

EVAN MARC KATZ — Apr 3 — My father got cancer and I am helping care for him. I am 45 living in NYC with "Parents/extended family." How do you put that in a profile? – Alan

Great question, Alan – one that defies an easy answer.
Reasons to tell the truth:
1) It's easier to remember
2) You won't have to explain yourself later
3) It's the commonly accepted and ethical thing to do.
4) You wouldn't want someone to lie to you.

Reasons to not tell the truth:
1) It sounds like a big red flag
2) It requires a lot of explanation
3) It falls under the category of "Too Much Information"
4) It will eliminate most potential candidates right off the bat

Living with your parents falls in the same tricky category as a 71 year old woman or a 5'2" man. Just being who you are – when people feel like they have infinite options – is not always the most effective strategy. In fact, for people on the extremes of height, weight, age, etc – online dating is not going to be your best bet. You probably do better in real life based on charm, kindness and personality as opposed to that "checklist" people use when searching online.

I hate going on record to advocate for anything less than full disclosure, but that's what I'm going to recommend to you. And while all the hypocrites can complain that lying is always wrong, I'll still believe that it's the best course of action.

The full article was originally published at Evan Marc Katz's Blog, but is no longer available.

Mark Brooks: Hi Evan, :-)  …I'm still going to recommend telling the truth. Sugar coat it, but tell the truth Alan. Women will always be drawn to honest men. There's a shortage of them. Your comments please…
