MADISON.COM – Aug 12 – Match.com doesn't break out data of those 65 and older on its site, but more than 6% of Match members are over 60, said Jaklin Kaden, the company's public relations coordinator. Meanwhile, 22% of Match.com members are in the 50-plus demographic. "In fact, within the last five years the 50-plus age group is Match.com's fastest growing demographic," Kaden said. "It's grown over 50% in the last five years." Match.com also owns a website for older adults called SeniorPeopleMeet.com. FULL ARTICLE @ MADISON.COM

Q&A With GameCrush PlayDates And Co-founder Eric Strasser
PC WORLD – Aug 12 – GameCrush is an online service that offers to connect paying customers with bona fide gamer girls, known simply as PlayDates. GameCrush is essentially an online dating service that substitutes gaming for dating. The private beta launched in March. The service involves voice chat as well as live video streaming. Here is the interview with co-founder Eric Strasser and two of the PlayDates, Gina "SuperVillain" (SV) and Katie "Joybutton" (JB)
Q: How did you come up with the concept of GameCrush?
Eric: GameCrush was conceived two years ago. We saw the transition of people’s relationships online and the interactions people were having on Facebook. And we saw that the gaming community was far behind in social networking. We also felt that there was a big segment of the gaming community that was completely ignored, which was the female gamer.
Q: How many people are registered so far?
Eric: We have ~5000 registered PlayDates and over 2000 players.
Q: So how does one become a PlayDate?
SV: I read a gaming blog and saw Gamecrush.com; basically as a community of girls playing games. I thought it was the best thing for me, because it’s very rare for me to run into another female gamer in the real world who actually knows what she’s talking about.
Q: What is the female-to-male PlayDate ratio?
JB: Predominantly females.
Q: Do you have any horror stories you can tell us about your time at GameCrush?
SV: I have not had any bad experiences. People who play on GameCrush are a lot more respectful compared to the people you’d see on other live gaming platforms.
Q: How does GameCrush protect PlayDates from getting verbally abused?
SV: I can end a session any time I want. I can also flag a person.
Eric: Before the game starts they can see respectful rating of the player.
Q: So what are some of the changes coming up with the upcoming GameCrush public beta?
Eric: There is so much. I can’t go into details just yet. I just want to say it is really going to be cutting edge and we’re pretty excited about it.

Craigslist Under Fire For Kids On “Adult Services”
READ WRITE WEB – Aug 11 – Last week, craigslist was the subject of a primetime CNN story that criticized the site for "not doing enough" to prevent child sex trafficking, quoting a youth rights advocate who said craigslist is the primary venue for selling minors for sex. Craigslist later responded that it works "tirelessly" to prevent ads for minors in the adult services section and works with law enforcement and non-profits to fight child sex trafficking. Craigslist isn't legally responsible for any of the content uploaded by users. But advertising for illegal services is against its terms of use and craigslist says it screens all ads and rejects those that are about sex.

Skype, Going Public, Hopes For $100 Million From First Offering
NY TIMES – Aug 9 – Skype hopes to raise $100M in IPO. Analysts have speculated that Skype’s sale, planned for the Nasdaq market, could be the biggest initial offering in the technology sector since Google went public in 2004 and raised $1.67 billion. Skype has ~124M users a month worldwide. In the first six months of this year, those users made 95 billion minutes worth of calls, the company said. But only 8.1M Skype users are paying customers. Video calling represents 40% of total calling time on Skype, and analysts say this could grow further as the proliferation of smartphones enables more people to place such calls while on the go. FULL ARTICLE @ NY TIMES
Mark Brooks: Fascinating. 40% of Skype users use the webcam. So people are becoming more comfortable using their webcams, it would seem. However, growth for the webcam based dating site leaders Speeddate and Woome growth has stagnated in the USA according to Compete. Have you considered adding webcam based dating to your dating site?
The Relentless Visionary Behind Match.com, Sex.com – With Gary Kremen
MIXERGY – Aug 6 – Gary Kremen got Jobs.com, Autos.com, Housing.com,
Sex.com and other domains for free by recognizing that the internet
would be a powerful business platform long before there was even a fee
for acquiring domain names.
Q: You were one of the first people to get domains, right?
A: Yeah. I guess sometimes luck is good. It’s better than being smart. I just was earlier than others.
Q: You bought Match.com for how much? My research says for $ 2,400.
A: That’s an accurate statement. What I bought more of was the email addresses. I saw the value of email addresses. I started noticing, in the early ’90s, more women on email and I said, “Hmm. I wonder if I could convince those. women to get their pictures scanned as an attachment at Kinkos and I could sell access to them.” Just like the 900 numbers. That was the genesis of the idea. I was doing a lot of dating using the 900 numbers in the newspapers. I met a programmer and I said, “I want you to build an email-based dating service. I had an implementation of that running in 1994 and it was growing. Then we were forced to sell it.
Q: Why? Tell me a little about that.
A: I raised some Angel money first in early ’95. Later, I raised venture capital and I think they saw the content and got embarrassed. Venture firms have limited partners who are conservative institutions and people were a lot conservative back then.
Q: What happened at the end of Match.com?
A: The board, over my objections, decided to sell the Match business unit for $7M to a company called SendIt. SendIt, nine months later, sold it to Citysearch/Ticketmaster/IAC for ~$15M. One of the things that we created was this idea of web pages that change based on who you are and web pages that change based on a database. We got an issued patent for that.
Q: What drove you? What was the drive that just kept you going when there’s so many setbacks here in your history from Sex.com being taken away from you to Match.com being sold for a penny?
A: I think it was an older desire and a continuing desire to prove myself. Now I am less driven. Until recently, I would never, ever hire a married person.
Q: Frankly, when you are a single person and it’s your only thing in life, you’re so much more productive than when you’re married. Aren’t you?
A: I would never hire a developer who has a girlfriend or smells good. If they have time for a girlfriend, to go to concerts, they’re not focused on the PHP.
Q: What was your most successful hit?
A: After I left Match, I co-founded a company called Net Angels with two guys. We merged that with a company called Firefly and sold it to Microsoft. Then I made some small investments and started company called Resonate, that went public.
Q: What are the big lessons you've learned?
A: I would’ve done some more early exits if I could have, even if I would have left a bunch of money on the table.
Q: One of the things I admire the most are these brilliant ideas. Is that just a gift or is there a system? Is there something you could teach us from that?
A: It’s a curse. It’s not a gift. Everyone has ideas. Implementation is a different thing.
Q: Last advice for entrepreneurs out there?
A: Don’t give up. I think a lot of people are close and they give up their ideas. They give up. Go get the free book “Patent It Yourself.” I can’t speak enough about that. Harder in the software world, but if you’re thinking of a physical thing, good thing to do on your own. You can do it pretty cheaply.
Q: So, what’s coming up next for yo?
A: I am thinking a lot about the energy space. A lot bigger than the Internet. I got some investments already.

Shaadi.com, A 20-million-strong Indian Matrimonial Site
THE GLOBE AND MAIL – Aug 6 – Unlike Lavalife and eHarmony users, members on sites such as Shaadi.com often have a parent looking over their shoulder – if not running their profile outright. About 30% of the Canadian profiles on Shaadi are made by parents for their sons and daughters – and scrutinized routinely. Among other criteria, the site lets members search by community, religion, caste and sub caste. The company recently teamed up with FastLife International, which organizes speed dating and singles' events around the world. About two years ago, FastLife launched events for Hindus, Christians and Jews, as well as East Asians. For this community, they host four events monthly in Toronto and two a month in Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa.
