Why Games Are The Killer App For Social Networks [And iDating?]

Posted on August 19, 2010

Ravi mehta viximo OPW – Aug 19 – In 2009, $2.2 billion in virtual goods were sold to consumers globally, and that number is expected to rocket to $6 billion by 2013. Although virtual worlds and MMOs have historically driven the growth in virtual goods, today the fastest growing segment is social games. Social gaming got its start in mid-2007 with the launch of the Facebook Platform. In 2009, social games generated $500 million revenue, primarily from social games on Facebook. There are nearly 150 social networks with over 1 million monthly uniques. When it comes to social games, smaller social networks, paradoxically, often have the benefit of size. Users of multiple social networks tend to split their time between Facebook and another social network. To these users, Facebook is an indispensable communication tool, but the other social network is essentially the local pub: A close knit community woven around shared affinities and experiences. Unlike advertising, which detracts from the social experience of a site, a successful social games strategy will simultaneously increase a site’s stickiness and significantly increase revenue.

Mark Brooks: Full disclosure. This article was written by Ravi Mehta, VP Product for Viximo, who are a former client of Courtland Brooks.

New Study Claims “Cougars” Do Not Exist

Posted on August 19, 2010

Absolvent cougars TIME – Aug 19 – Michael Dunn, a psychology researcher at the
University of Wales Institute, has released a study
that he insists renders the cougar craze a "myth." After examining the
age preferences expressed in 22,400 singles ads on dating sites, he
found no
sizable cohort of women seeking younger men. A 2003 study by the
American Association of Retired
Persons (AARP) found two-thirds of U.S. men 40+  were dating younger
women, and 34% of 40+ women
were dating younger men. And 35% said they preferred it to dating
same-age or older men. But Rich Gosse, executive producer of
CougarEvents.com
,
said his business wouldn't be growing. Gosse, author of his own book on
the subject, The Cougar Imperative,
acknowledges that Dunn's website research is probably accurate. But
"What's changed so dramatically in the past few years is how
much more open women are to the possibility of looking for younger men,
and vice versa," says Gosse. FULL ARTICLE @ TIME

Infidelity Rises When She Makes More Than He Does

Posted on August 19, 2010

Infidelity picture1 BUSINESS WEEK – Aug 16 – A new study by Christin Munsch, a graduate student at Cornell University, finds that men are more likely to cheat if their income is much lower than what their wife or female partner makes, while women are more likely to fool around if they make more than their husband or male partner. However, Helen Fisher, an anthropologist, said it makes sense that men with more money would be more likely to fool around. "He probably travels a lot and drives nicer cars, and he's probably in finer restaurants. He's advertising the kind of resources that women are looking for from an evolutionary perspective," she said. "Around the world, women go for men who are on the top of the pile." As for women, she said, wealth brings them a greater power to do what they want, whether it's leave a bad relationship or have an affair.

Why You’ll Never Find Real Love Online

Posted on August 19, 2010

Marie claire article MARIE CLAIRE – Aug 18 – A former scientist behind Match.com tells all. After spending a decade at Match.com and Yahoo Personals writing compatibility formulas, psychologist Mark Thompson had fallen out of love with his work.

Q: What made you leave e-dating?
A:  I hated the way we overpromised and underdelivered.  No computer can accurately predict whom you should be with.

Q: But isn't blind dating always hit or miss?
A: Yes, but you don't have to pay $30 a month to be set up by your friend. There's a different set of expectations. When diet companies show someone who lost a bunch of weight in six weeks, they have to say, "Results not typical." eHarmony and other sites should do the same.

Q: Do you think online dating can be fixed?
A: It really depends on people's willingness to come back and tell us why each date didn't work out so the system could get smarter.

Q: Your book is about finding love. Why did you call it Who Should You Have Sex With and not Who Should You Go Out With?
A: Because sex is a huge part of a relationship that people don't always focus on.

Q: But doesn't happiness have more to do with emotional compatibility?
A: Sexual compatibility is a keystone to a relationship's long-term success, and it requires three things: a similar emotional approach; a similar activity level; and a complementary power dynamic.

Q: How can we know if there's chemistry before we have sex?
A: People's public personas often correspond to their sexual personas.
