Dating Site Owners – How Do You Sleep At Night?

Posted on August 3, 2010

QuestionMark OPW – Aug 3 – A good friend sent me the following email.

"What are your thoughts of dating sites that use dishonest scams to get members to convert? I signed up to datetallmen.com, out of curiosity, and I got 4 emails from very attractive men, however I had no picture posted. When I went to “who viewed me” it says 0 people have viewed my profile. So noone viewed my profile, yet I have 4 interested handsome men? My conclusion is that this site is sending fake emails to lure members to sign up. I met the owners at the idate, how do they sleep at night? Kinda makes you wonder about this industry."

Your comments please.

Vancouverites Cheat Less: Infidelity Site

Posted on August 3, 2010

Noel biderman ashley madison METRO NEWS – Aug 3 - Noel Biderman, co-founder of Ashleymadison.com, a dating site for married people looking to have an affair, said business is booming everywhere except Vancouver. “It’s either something in the culture or the active nature of the citizens,” he said. He said he saw the opportunity for an infidelity dating site when he learned that 35% of people on singles’ dating sites were married. Infidelity need not be vilified, he said, adding that in some cases, it can actually save a marriage.

Why You Should Pay Attention To How About We Startup

Posted on August 3, 2010

Howaboutwe logo BUSINESS INSIDER – Aug 2 – How About We, a months-old dating service built around proposing and accepting specific date ideas, has been generating an impressive amount of buzz. How About We is a company you should actually pay attention to. Here's why:

– Differentiation. As crowded as the dating industry is, there hasn't been much innovation in the nature of the basic product.
– Great additional revenue possibilities. This featured date proposal takes place at a restaurant for which Groupon-clone BuyWithMe is currently offering a coupon.
– Investors like it.
– There's an obvious early exit. This service has plenty of natural buyers if it catches on.
– Social media. How About We lends itself much more readily to user-driven distribution through social networks.

$100,000 Matchmaker

Posted on August 2, 2010

Category-matchmaking-serviceTIME – Aug 2 – In this economy, it seems unthinkable that people would pay up to six figures just to find a mate. And yet expensive matchmakers are reporting that business is up these days. Janis Spindel, who charges clients between $50,000 and $500,000 a year to find the "woman of their dreams," says membership jumped 41% in 2009 from the year before and is up 46% so far this year. Premier Match, a New York City–based agency where annual membership costs a min of $5,500, logged $1.5M in sales last year, a 30% increase from the previous year. Matchmaking agencies advertise different strengths to attract high-end clients. Barbie Adler, CEO of Selective Search, worked in executive recruitment before she started her agency in Chicago 10 years ago. "My experience has been crucial to looking beyond a résumé to make a good match," she says. Indeed, clients are willing to part with a minimum of $15,000 for Adler to work with them. Other firms take a scientific approach. The British firm Seventy Thirty, which charges its clients a min of $15,000, has a team made up exclusively of psychologists.

Online Dating Sites Are A Treasure Trove For Scientists

Posted on August 2, 2010

Find-love-131059 MERCURY NEWS – Aug 1 – Romance
doesn't lend itself to yardsticks and calculators. But the proliferation
of online sites like Match.com, PlanetOut.com and FarmersOnly.com give
social scientists unprecedented opportunities to study who likes whom,
and why. "But I'm not sure we'll ever find the algorithm that eliminates the
need to actually get to know someone," said one of the new field's
leading researchers, UC Berkeley's Andrew Fiore. Online dating sites reveal the motivated behavior of people actually
seeking real partners, he said. Through "content analysis," researchers can study how people
market themselves.

Among the findings:
– Men
most often make the first move

– Both men and women seek partners who are similar to themselves in
age, education, height, religion, politics and views about smoking
– Women are less open-minded, at least regarding ethnicity
– Both sexes exaggerate a bit. Men add a half-inch to their height;
women miraculously drop five pounds off their weight
– Appearance
matters
