Depending On One Investor Could Lose You A Lot Of Money

Posted on November 30, 2012

Matchcom fran maierINC – Nov 29 - A few years after
its founding Match.com was sold for just a small fraction of its actual
worth. What did one member of the original start-up team learn from the
misadventure? Fran Maier was one of the first half dozen employees to
join the fledgling company, and who took the role of general manager.
Match.com was sold to Cendant for $7M.  Cendant sold it to Ticketmaster
Citysearch Services for $50M just a year and a half later.

Q: What did Maier learn from her intimate insider's view of that colossal error?
A: Confidence
Through Networking - I wish I had gone out and reached out to a broader
range of people to help me figure out not just how to do it but how to
sell it.

Q: What was the other big takeaway of the botched Match.com exit?
A:
Exhaustion can play a big role in poor decision-making. Fighting the
necessary fights for your start-up's future can take a ton of energy,
she learned, and somewhat costly investments in conserving that energy
can really pay off.

Australia’s Digital Heart Stripped Bare

Posted on November 29, 2012

Eharmony-logoIT WIRE – Nov 29 – Technology plays an integral part in how we interact, establish and terminate relationships. The old-fashioned phone call is great, but love is now definitely online and mobile,” said Managing Director of eHarmony Australia, Jason Chuck. Since 2007, the site has been responsible for one in every 50 marriages in Australia over the last five years, which equates to ~11K eHarmony Australia weddings. The site boasts ~ 1.5M registrations. Also with smartphones now being used by 8.8M Australians, 1 in 10 Australians say they have used an SMS to say “I love you” for the first time. Sadly, eHarmony’s research found that the same number of people has been dumped via SMS, email or social media. 1 in 10 Australians has found love online. 35-44 year olds are the most successful as 1 in 6 have found love online.

How DinnerDate.com Takes Online Dating Offline

Posted on November 29, 2012

Dinnerdate andrew connellSOCALTECH – Nov 28 - Andrew Connell is the CEO of DinnerDate.com, a startup which is using the Internet to arrange group dates at local restaurants, to connect people in person and offline.

Q: What's DinnerDate.com?
A: A small group dating. Typically, we put together a table of 10 single people. When people register on DinnerDate.com, they create a short profile and choose to go to a dinner that is advertised.

Q: Where'd the idea for DinnerDate.com come from?
A: We've been around for over a year now. The idea really came from looking at the dating industry online. It was taking people an incredible amount of time to get offline.

Q: What's your background?
A: I was previously at Nokia, and ran Nokia's e-commerce business globally in fourteen markets.

Q: You've been in beta in San Diego, how you're planning on scaling that out to other markets?
A: We've identified ten cities in the U.S. where we'd like to roll out to in 2013. Also we've been approached by companies who would like to white label what DinnerDate.com provides.

Q: What have been the biggest challenges you've found so far in launching?
A: Getting the right type of restaurants, menu, and event structure and secondly figuring out how people are flowing through the site, optimizing conversions in the right places, and really engaging them on that journey.

OkCupid Founder Says His Dating Site Has Created A Blind-Date Algorithm

Posted on November 29, 2012

Okcupid sam yagan nov 2012BUSINESS INSIDER – Nov 27 – OkCupid co-founder Sam Yagan said the company uses data to understand its users, gain insights, and use that data for marketing purposes. He claims that the company knows "quantitatively and anecdotally" that its users find better, more compatible matches on OkCupid than on other dating sites. OkCupid could use its data to set up a date between two people who won't know what the other looks like until they meet in person, a classic blind-date scenario, but arranged by algorithms rather than acquaintances.

Airport Dating

Posted on November 28, 2012

Meetattheairport symbolCNN – Nov 27 – When a delayed flight left Steve Pasternack stranded at Miami Airport in early 2011, he settled into his departure lounge seat and cast a curious eye across his fellow passengers. He launched Meetattheairport.com, a dating site that enables travelers to connect at the departure gate. Since launching in May 2011 the platform has attracted ~20K members worldwide. The concept works by prompting users to enter their personal interests, flight details and departure airport before matching them up with individuals with similar interests and travel arrangements. Pasternack is not alone in exploring the possibility of transforming airports into social meeting places. Vantaa Airport in Helsinki, Finland, recently considered the possibility of introducing an airport speed-dating service.
