“The Dating Ring” Brings A Plane Full Of NYC Brides To SF

Thedatingring logoBUSINESSWEEK – Mar 7 – On Memorial Day weekend, a plane will land in SF filled with single New York City women who are looking to find love. A startup called The Dating Ring is aiming to raise $50K to solve what it sees as a demographic dilemma: “There are tons more single women in NYC, and tons more single men in SF,” reads the company’s campaign on crowdfunding site, Crowdtilt. For $20, NYC women could win a free flight to SF. Donations of $1,250 guarantee the full package: a flight to SF, housing for four nights, three dates, two parties, and three private 30-minute matchmaking and date-coaching sessions via Skype. Bay Area bachelors can pay $20 to attend the party, or $100 for a ticket to the more refined cocktail party.

Spark Networks Is A Heartbreak For Investors

Sparknetworks logo new Jan 13USA TODAY – Mar 6 – Spark Networks fizzled 19% to $4.66 last week after the company said 2014 could be a tough year for ChristianMingle and JDate. Shares are down ~50% from its May 2013 peak of $9.25 a share. The company is in a proxy fight with hedge fund Osmium Partners, which has amassed a 14% stake in the company and is proposing a slate of directors and says the company needs better management.

Tinder logoSEEKING ALPHA – Mar 6 – IAC is a majority shareholder in Tinder. From 100M daily profile views in August 2013, Tinder is expected to hit 1B daily profile views in April. The beauty of Tinder is its simplicity. An average user is said to spend 60 minutes per day on Tinder. It is difficult to estimate the addressable market for Tinder. The global online dating market is estimated to total ~$4B annually. Assuming that Tinder would capture 5% of this would give it $200M in annual revenue.

Dutch Politicians Join Grindr To Pick Up Votes

Grindr logo new dec 13REUTERS – Two Amsterdam local politicians have uploaded their profiles to Grindr to try and pick up votes for their liberal party ahead of elections later this month. “We are very fond of new technology and new media,” said Jan-Bert Vroege, an openly gay candidate for the D66 party. D66 is a progressive opposition party, which was an early proponent of liberal policies in the Netherlands, including gay marriage, euthanasia and drug tolerance. It ranked third in the most recent national opinion polls.

Spark Networks Q4 Financial Results

Q4 2013 was $17.2M, an increase of 6% YOY. Full year 2013 revenue was $69.4M, a 12% increase compared to 2012. Q4 Net loss was $3.5M, compared to a net loss of $10.5M in Q4 2012.
