Women Today Are Rejecting Traditional Dating Standards

Posted on February 6, 2017

Okcupid logo aktualniOKCUPID BLOG – Feb 6 – Data proves that women are continuously gaining confidence in dating, and beyond. OkCupid discovered that only 20% of single women on the site believe that men should be the heads of their households. That's down from 30% in 2008. Additionally, single women are feeling way less obligated to maintain social standards of beauty, too. Women are ~15% more likely to ask someone they like a lot out on a date than women a decade ago. Women who send the first message on OkCupid are 2.5 times more likely to receive a response than men who do.

Uber Might Be The Next Big Dating App

Posted on February 6, 2017

Uberpool1DAILYCALLER – Feb 3 – Uber filed a patent showing that it is exploring technology that would allow passengers to share rides through the UberPool feature with people who have certain similarities. In order to do this, Uber wants to "access social media data" and then "identify common links" between customers, according to the patent. The filing comes as a surprise since Uber updated its "Community Guidelines" in December to clamp down on sexual harassment. One of the new rules was the banning of flirting.

Mark Brooks: Oh God no! Does anyone want to comment on why this is such an inherently bad idea. Matching for networking is great. Matching for dating is a dud that will get Uber into hot water quickly. Uber has picked up some key people from the dating industry btw. Aaron Schildkrout was co-founder of HowAboutWe, which was acquired by Match in 2014 and he now works with Ed Baker who is VP Product and Growth at Uber and was previously CEO of Friend.ly which was acquired by Facebook in 2011. (Full Disclosure: Friend.ly is a former client of Courtland Brooks)

Top iOS Dating Apps Are Exposing Users Personal Life To Hackers

Posted on February 6, 2017

Dating apps2WIRED.CO.UK – Feb 3 – The more personal data a company has on its customers, the bigger the risk if it is hacked. A Wired investigation has found some of the dating apps are leaking Facebook details, sharing birthdates and taking precise location details. These were Happn, Hookup Now, AnastasiaDate, and AffairD. The analysis also highlighted the amount of personal data being collected by MeetMe and specific location data being gathered by Once. Happn is supposed to only reveal a person's first name, but it also leaks a person's Facebook ID. Happn acknowledged there was a flaw and said: "We are working on a solution where Happn would act as a proxy, preventing users from being able to identify other users' Facebook IDs in the future." Once was shown to be gathering highly specific location data. The company said it would evaluate whether it needed to collect close location data and remove this feature if it wasn't required. AnastasiaDate allows for a person's date of birth to be visible, despite not being displayed on their profile. During analysis, MeetMe sent data to one advertiser "110 times during a five-minute period while clicking different buttons in the app". Much of this data was sent when an in-app button was pressed. MeetMe said it provides anonymous advertising IDs to firms, which are widely used across the industry, and that it doesn't share personally identifiable info with advertisers.

Swiss Dating App Blinq Acquired By Outdoor Ad Firm APG|SGA

Posted on February 4, 2017

Blinq screenshotTECH CRUNCH – Feb 3 – The price of the deal wasn't disclosed, but given Blinq's limited traction, it probably wasn't very high. The dating app, that was incorporating beacon proximity technology, and the algorithm to judge physical attractiveness, also develped by the startup, will be both shut down within two weeks. The team will join APG|SGA to help the company to launch a beacon network for a new division that will be developing interactive ads to work in conjunction with the Bluetooth comms tech. The startup had raised ~ $1M since its launch in 2013 and claims 400k registered users.

Tinder Adopts Programmatic Advertising

Posted on February 3, 2017

Facebook audience network1CAMPAIGNLIVE – Feb 3 – Advertisers can now buy Tinder ads programmatically. The dating app has partnered with Facebook's Audience Network. Peter Foster, GM of global advertising at Tinder's parent company Match Group, said that using Facebook's Audience Network will allow them to have high quality, well-targeted ads sold and served by Facebook for any impressions that they don't fill with their direct sales efforts. According to Foster, Tinder has been tripling its direct sales YOY and its sales team could not keep up with the demand. Launched in April 2014, Facebook's Audience Network allows marketers already running ads on Facebook's News Feed to extend their reach through publishers and apps. There are now 4M advertisers on Facebook, but the platform won't disclose how many of those use the Audience Network. The popularity of programmatic advertising has surged in the last year. eMarketer projects that this year, programmatic will represent 73% of all display ad spending. By next year, 75% of all programmatic display ads will be on mobile.
