Online Dating Services More than Double Ad Spending in Three Years

MARKETING VOX — Feb 28 — In 2004 (Jan-Nov) total U.S. media spending was $149 million; 2005 (Jan-Nov) $310 million; 2006 (Jan-Nov) $430 million.  (Nielsen Monitor-Plus) In 2006, most dating services companies spent their advertising dollars on Cable TV with $130.6 million in reported ad spending, the Internet ranks second at $127.3 million and Spot TV follows with $75.1 million. Leading the bulk of the TV spending are eHarmony with $110.1 million in total spending and Match with $66.4 million in total spending.

eHarmony clearly has more guys than girls. Given the raunchy TRUE advertising, one would expect a higher representation of males than the 116 scored here.  I think this is because TRUE is using their raunchy advertising in male oriented spots, and also, the edgy ads still manage to attract women.  American Singles scored higher with a 120 for males. The gay sites and PlentyofFish have the highest addiction levels. Yahoo Personals, TRUE, and Mate1 scored a little low for user engagement. All in the 74-78% range. – Mark Brooks

ComScore Networks recently reported that 22% of French Internet users, age 15+, visited online personals sites in December 2006, followed by the British with 20%, and the Americans with 13%. Interestingly, usage of dating sites seems to peak in the summer months in each country; July in the U.K. and U.S. and September in France.

Mobile datingPC WORLD — Feb 13 — Mobile dating is gowing partly because of newer cell phones w/cameras, broadband connections and clearer displays. Tole Hart at Gartner said, "Mobile dating will continue to grow because Internet communities like MySpace and Jumbuck Island will grow." Trilibis said Webdate Mobile surged 23% in the past year to 92,000 registered users. Analysts at Frost & Sullivan put global mobile dating revenues at $31 million in 2005, and is expected to grow to $215 million in 2009. Market research firm, Visiongain, said that ~13% of U.S. dating service members accessed Web sites through their cell phones. Sprint offers Webdate Mobile for $3.99/mo and Jumbuck Island for $3.99/mo. Jumbuck Island said 40,000 unique visitors per day use it's Fast Flirting service worldwide. IceBreaker Inc. debuted Crush or Flush on Jan 16th.

SF GATE — Feb 15 — According to Cingular's latest wireless courtesy and dating survey, 33% of people communicated with their date or mate via text messaging, up 6% over last year. 38% of respondents said that a date answered his or her wireless phone in the midst of a great dinner conversation. 17% reported that a cell phone saved them from an uncomfortable date.  8% said they ended a relationship over rude/offensive wireless behavior.
