Bumble Vulnerabilities – Data of 95M Daters at Risk

Posted on November 16, 2020

Bumble icon 2020FORBES – Nov 16 – Researchers at San Diego-based Independent Security Evaluators discovered that even if they'd been banned from Bumble, they could acquire a wealth of information on its daters. The flaws were fixed earlier this month. For ~6 months since the researchers alerted Bumble they could acquire the identities of every Bumble user. If an account was connected to Facebook, it was possible to retrieve all of their "interests" or pages they liked and pictures and rough location. Bumble's API didn't do the necessary checks or have limits so it was possible to repeatedly probe the server for information on other users. It took six months for Bumble to fix the problems. Bumble rival Hinge had vulnerabilities and the problems were addressed in under a month.

Dating App Usage Is Changing for the Better

Posted on November 11, 2020

Dating apps picturMASHABLE – Nov 11 – Between September and October, according to Apptopia, major dating apps grew considerably. Match grew 21%, OkCupid +21%, and Bumble +16%. Tinder and Hinge grew more modestly. "As people become more isolated, the desire and need to establish some sort of intimacy may also be increasing as a coping mechanism," said Dr. Ash Nadkarni, MD, Associate Psychiatrist and Instructor at Harvard Medical School. New positive dating habits are emerging. Match's CEO, Hosseini foresees singles taking their dating app usage more seriously and Match was already seeing a slower shift from hookup culture to more intentional dating. Match's Singles in America survey, released last month, (5k+ people), found 58% of single app daters shifted toward more intentional dating due to the pandemic. 63% said they're spending more time getting to know potential partners. 70% said they're being more honest in their interactions. 45% of Hinge users reported developing new healthy dating habits during the pandemic, such as being up front about what they want. Hinge dates went up 17% this summer, ghosting went down 27%.

Bumble’s Changes Its “Unmatch” Feature

Posted on November 11, 2020

Bumble unmatchTECH CRUNCH – Nov 10 – Bumble is changing how its "unmatch" feature works in an effort to better prioritize user safety. The change will make it more difficult for a harasser to use the app's unmatch feature in order to avoid having their conversation reported to Bumble's safety team. Before, when either side of a match opted to unmatch the other, the conversation simply would disappear. This, however, could be used by a bad actor to leave a conversation before the victim of their harassment had a chance to report them. The change follows a high-profile story about the dangers with using dating apps, specifically Tinder. As a result of the story, Tinder was updating its reporting mechanism to respond to users in-app or on email and direct them to crisis counseling and survivor support. But Tinder hadn't addressed the key issues with the unmatch feature.

Dating in the Runup to the Election

Posted on October 30, 2020

Okcupid politicsNEW YORK TIMES – Oct 30 – Singles are putting their political affiliations front and center as they search for partners. Some singles want to know if their potential matches are civically engaged, even on a basic level. Others see their dates' politics as indicators of compatibility. In a survey, Bumble found that out of 50 factors women considered in a potential match, politics ranked ninth. (It came in behind smoking habits, family plans, life goals and relationship intent.) 33 to 35% of all users said the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement have made them care more about the political views of their potential match. On OkCupid, politics has become the most popular category. ~1.2M people who use OkCupid said they prefer to date people who share their political views.

Deals During Covid and Investing in Founders Without Meeting IRL

Posted on October 27, 2020

Female founders fund logoFORBES – Oct 27 – VCs now take their pitches over a safely-distanced Zoom call. But VC funding for female founders has dropped to a three-year low. Firms invested ~$434M in Q3, the lowest figure since the Q2 of 2017, according to PitchBook data. The Q2 total also amounts to a 48% drop in funding from Q2, when female founders received $841M across 132 deals. There are VC firms that focus exclusively on female founders, such as Female Founders Fund (FFF). Founded in 2014, the NYC-based firm has raised two funds to date (~$6M and ~$25M) and counts 40+ companies in its portfolio. One deal FFF closed during the lockdown is Lex, a text-based social app for queer, non-binary and trans communities. Other investors that joined in alongside FFF include Peanut's Michelle Kennedy and the Bumble Fund. Through her app, Lex founder Kell Rakowski is reframing the dating experience from a visual-based to a text-based experience, bringing back old-school personal ads to social media. The current version of Lex has zero photos and no swiping. The NYC-based startup recently closed its seed round of $1.5M, which was led by FFF.
