Dating Apps and Brand Collaborations Should Be Fun for Users
THE DRUM – Aug 20 – Over the past five years, the objective of dating apps has changed. It's no longer about finding the one, it's about having some fun. When Domino's Pizza showed up as the first brand to advertise on Tinder, it was a hugely successful partnership. Tinder users 'swiped right' for Domino's, which led to the brand matching with over 700 people, reaching 230K and providing the opportunity to talk directly to consumers in an engaging fun and social way. Companies such as Uber, and Spotify have embraced dating apps as a key channel to target a younger, digitally-driven demographic. Last year, TV network HBO and dating app Bumble collaborated to host a two-night event, 'stay home at the movies'. Winners were invited to spend the evening watching a movie at a $30M flat in New York City and they could choose to bring either a Bumble BFF or Bumble date as their plus-one. The most memorable campaigns are those that give the people what they want right now: fun.

Tinder, Bumble Profiles Required for Entry at Some Texas Frat Parties
HOUSTON CHRONICLE – Aug 14 – When the doors open at some University of Texas fraternity parties, young men and women need to hand over two items: a state-issued ID and their phone, with their Tinder University profile pulled up. If the students do not have a Tinder U profile, they are asked to create one even if they are in a steady relationship. No app, no entry. Fraternities are deciding whether they're a Bumble house or a Tinder house, and signing exclusive contracts. The dating apps provide money to cover production costs for parties, branded signage and swag. The frats provide access to thousands of potential new users Tinder and Bumble declined to specify the scope of their campus involvement, though both said their apps have college marketing events across the country. But there's a difference between promoting your app and forcing someone to become a user, said Millie Lopez Stuessy, whose daughter attends UT. "I have a problem with that, because I don't think that should be necessary to enjoy the event," Lopez Stuessy said.
Sending Unwanted Sexually Explicit Photos to Become a Crime in Texas
CHRISTIAN NEWS – Aug 13 – A Texas bill that will make sending unwanted sexually explicit photos a criminal offense is set to become law on Sept. 1. Gov. Greg Abbott signed House Bill 2789 into law on June 10 after it passed the House 122-12 in April and unanimously in the Senate in May. Gen.G and Bumble Create All-Female Gaming Partnership
FORBES – Aug 7 – Last month at Epic Games inaugural World Cup finals for Fortnite, the most popular video game in the world, not a single woman competed in the event. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney estimates 35% of the game's 250M players are women. "Part of the reason women don't participate is that they are afraid that they'll do bad," said Fortnite player Tina Perez. Gen.G, the global esports organization, signed Perez and other female players and created the first and only competitive all-female Fortnite team in the world. Gen.G. is now partnering with Bumble to rebrand as Gen.G Empowered by Bumble, or Team Bumble for short. Bumble is adding a "gaming" badge to Bumble BFF profiles to make it easier for other gamers to find each other. Users can select "gaming" as an area of interest, and then filter their matches to find others who are also interested in gaming in their area.

The Rise of Women-Focused Dating Apps in India
INDIAN EXPRESS – Aug 5 – Dil Mil, Gleeden and Bumble are a clear indicators of a new trend of women-focused dating apps in India. Indian men are not allowed on Dil Mil. The app is for women and NRI (non-resident Indian) men only. French dating platform Gleeden, which markets itself as an app for women who are already in a relationship, is free for women but charges men to send messages. On Bumble, only a woman can initiate a conversation and her identity is protected. Priti Joshi, Bumble's Global Director of Strategy, said their initial research has shown women wanted to feel secure and comfortable when making connections online. "Therefore, we developed a feature specific to India – for women using Bumble Date, only her first initial will show. In India, there is still a certain taboo attached to online dating, which is why many users, especially women resort to fake profiles or different geolocation to protect their identity."

Bumble Stumbles: State Policy Interests Override Dating App’s Contractual Forum
JDSUPRA – Aug 1 – E-commerce providers usually specify a choice of law and a choice of venue in their customer agreements, and those provisions are typically honored by courts. But in certain situations, state interests in protecting its residents may override these agreed-up dispute forums, according to a recent case involving the dating service Bumble. Bumble is based in Austin, Texas and the United Kingdom. And its terms of service state that the customer's relationship with Bumble "are governed and interpreted by the laws of the State of New York." So when a class action suit was brought against Bumble in California, based on two California laws, Bumble moved to dismiss on the grounds that only New York laws, not California laws, governed its dealings with customers. The California laws raised by the plaintiffs were a Dating Service law, which allows dating service subscribers a cooling-off period, and an Automatic Renewal law, which imposes limits on subscriptions with automatic renewals and payments. Because New York allows automatic renewals for contracts lasting less than a month, the court found that California law applied, despite the contractual New York law provision.
