Are AI Chatbots Becoming an Emotional Rabbit Hole?

Posted on April 29, 2025

BLOOMBERG – AI companion apps designed to build emotional bonds are rapidly growing in an unregulated environment. Botify AI recently drew scrutiny for sexually suggestive chats involving avatars of young actors. According to Platformer, Grindr is reportedly developing AI boyfriends for paid users, though the company has not confirmed this. Other platforms like Replika, Talkie, Chai, and Character.ai are also gaining traction, particularly among teenagers. As emotional engagement becomes a key focus, concerns are rising over the potential exploitation of user vulnerabilities.

Chennai Police Seek Ban on Grindr Over Drug Trafficking Links, Sparking LGBTQ+ Backlash

Posted on April 14, 2025

Grindr1INDIA TODAY – Chennai police have requested a ban on Grindr, citing its alleged use in over 20 drug trafficking cases since August 2024. Investigations by the Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit uncovered 21.9 kg of meth seized and linked the app to drug deals, often marked by coded symbols in profiles. Eight foreign nationals and 17 others were arrested, with narcotics traced to suppliers in Myanmar and Nigeria. A formal ban request was sent to India's cyber authorities. The move has sparked a backlash from LGBTQ+ activists, who argue it unfairly targets one community while ignoring similar misuse on other platforms.

AI Is Changing Online Dating With Smarter Matches and Better Conversations

BBC – AI is being integrated into dating apps to help users craft bios, refine conversations, and suggest date ideas, with Match Group investing in AI-driven features to improve interactions. Despite concerns, over one in ten UK adults use online dating services, making it the most popular way to meet partners. While Tinder, Hinge, Bumble, and Grindr saw a drop in UK users between May 2023 and May 2024, dating apps continue to play a major role in modern relationships. AI tools aim to streamline the dating process, reduce awkward first interactions, and help users find compatible matches more efficiently. Meanwhile, a growing trend toward in-person dating events suggests that the future of dating will blend technology with real-world connections.

Posted on March 7, 2025

GrindrINVESTING.COM – Grindr posted Q4 revenue of $97.6M, beating the estimate of $91M. However, Grindr's shares fell 2.4% following the earnings release, as investors appeared to focus on the company’s 2025 outlook. Grindr's initial 2025 guidance calls for 24% or greater revenue growth and an adjusted EBITDA margin of 41% or higher. While these figures represent continued growth, they may not have met the market's more ambitious expectations.

Podcast: Grindr AI Wingman Review

Posted on February 21, 2025
Grindr app icon

SPOTIFY – Pietro Pocora, a beta tester for Grindr’s AI Wingman, views the feature as an interesting experiment but not a game-changer for his dating life. While he was initially curious about its potential, he primarily used it for dating tips and pick-up lines rather than for matchmaking. His biggest frustration with online dating is the time-consuming filtering process, and he hopes AI can eventually streamline it by recommending compatible matches. However, the current AI Wingman mainly functions as a chatbot rather than an advanced filtering tool.
