ANDROID HEADLINES – Jan 19 – Match.com pulled its Alexa skill for Amazon's Echo speakers and other compatible devices less than 48 hours following its launch and shortly after it became clear the service meant to provide users with dating tips delivers advice that many may find controversial. The skill itself provided general dating tips but also covered advice about sexual interactions. Inquiries about whether to have intercourse on the first date were often met with tongue-in-cheek responses such as "only if you must," as were questions on how many drinks to have, to which the skill suggested a user's alcohol consumption should be inversely proportional to the level of attractiveness of their date.

Match Partners With Amazon’s Alexa
POPSUGAR – Jan 17 – Amazon's Alexa has a new skill – "Match First Date What Ifs". The new Match skill on Alexa answers all of users 'what ifs' of the first date so they can go in feeling prepared and confident. The partnership between Match and Alexa is now available on all Alexa-powered devices, and was built using data from Match's annual Singles in America poll. Here are a couple of the questions (and their subsequent snarky answers) that Alexa will add to her mammoth library once users enable the skill:
What if I can't wait to text them after the date?
Text them as soon as you like. But if you're trying to play it cool, two days is the sweet spot.
What if they want to have sex?
If you do too, do them. If you don't, DO YOU.
Now Is The Hottest Time Of The Year For Online Dating
MARKETWATCH – Jan 6 – In the New Year, the online dating industry sees a surge in users. Zoosk typically sees a 20% jump in users in the first two weeks of the year and eHarmony sees a similar increase. Grindr and other gay apps usually experiences a 30% to 50% increase in users. Match.com sees a 60% surge in new members between Christmas Day and Valentine's Day. "Many singles sit around the family dinner table during the holidays and think, 'Maybe it would be better to have a partner'," said Mark Brooks, editor of Online Personals Watch. "That's when they start hitting dating sites in droves and go on dates before the indigestion sets in." It may also be more polite to arrange dates in the New Year rather than during the holidays, especially with family around. "They're going to be around for you long after your relationships," he says. With the constant stream of happy holiday photographs over social-networking sites, experts say the pressure to be in a romance this time of year has never been so intense. "There's an onslaught of images of family and togetherness," says Pepper Schwartz, author of "Dating After 50 for Dummies" and a love and relationship ambassador for AARP.

The Disruptive Influence Of Apps On Gay Bars
FINANCIAL TIMES – Dec 12 – Dating apps mean LGBT people do not need physical spaces to meet one another. A recent survey from Match.com suggested that 70% of gay relationships start online, compared with 50% for heterosexual men. The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, south London's oldest surviving gay venue, faced an uncertain future two years ago as developers eyed its prime location; it is situated in one of the capital's real estate hotspots. "Without doubt the dating apps have had a detrimental impact on how people meet each other," says James Lindsay, chief executive of the RVT. English Heritage granted the building a Grade II listing, which means it is of special historic or architectural interest. But it does not remove the unfavourable economics of running a gay venue.

Brands Losing Nearly 27% Of Paid-Search Clicks To Affiliates
SEARCH MARKETING DAILY – Nov 23 – Affiliate sites have had a love-hate relationship with advertisers for decades, but recently these marketers are becoming more aggressive in capturing and directing the search traffic through their sites. AdGooroo analyzed paid-search clicks on 164 non-branded online dating keywords running through desktop campaigns, including "dating sites," "online dating" and "best dating site" from Sep 1 through Nov 12, 2017. The average cost per click for the online dating keyword group during the month came in at $3.67, but the affiliate sites averaged a far higher CPC at $6.36, according to AdGooroo data. In theory, advertisers believe affiliates who send traffic to the brand's site drive up their cost of acquisition, said Jim Leichenko, director of marketing at AdGooroo. AdGooroo points to three sites in particular. Capturing a combined 26.7% of all clicks on the dating keywords, Top10BestDatingSites.com ranked No. 1 with a 10.5% click share. Consumer-Rankings.com came in at No. 3 with 8.3% click share. TheTop10Sites.com at No. 4 came in with a 7.9% click share, beating all other advertisers except for Match.com, which ranked at No. 2 with an 8.9% click share.
