Funky Feature Requests From OKCupid’s Users

Posted on October 27, 2017

Okcupid funky requests vaultOKCUPID BLOG – Oct 26 – OkCupid's support team is always receiving unsolicited requests for new OkCupid features. Here are a few of the funkiest feature requests.

  • Filter by hair or eye color
  • Taking someone to "OkCupid court"
The idea was that if someone rejects you – or ignores your messages – you could pay a fee to take them to an OkCupid 'court' – or otherwise punish accounts for not responding.
  • Auto-block people with "taco" in their username
Every so often, someone will spot the 'trend' that members with 'taco' in their username might actually be spam accounts, and sometimes they are. However, plenty of awesome people on OkCupid have this word in their username.
  • Yelp-style reviews of members
Why it didn't make the cut: Revenge reporting
  • Deleting drunk messages from another person's inbox

Researchers Say It Is Easy To Hack Tinder, OkCupid, And Others

Posted on October 26, 2017

Kasperskylab logoGIZMODO – Oct 25 – Using exploits ranging from simple to complex, researchers at the Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab say they could access users' location data, their real names and login info, their message history, and even see which profiles they've viewed. They tested Tinder, Bumble, OKCupid, Badoo, Mamba, Zoosk, Happn, WeChat and Paktor. Most apps have minimal HTTPS encryption, making it easy to access user data. The researchers say they have already sent their findings to the respective apps' developers.

OKCupid Filters Its Users By Planned Parenthood Support

Posted on September 12, 2017

Okcupid planned parenthoodNEWSBUSTERS – Sep 11 – OKCupid is filtering its users by support for Planned Parenthood, because a "shared cause is sexy" even when it's America's largest abortion provider. OKCupid advertised a "new profile badge" to help users "filter for Planned Parenthood supporters" for a month. To have the badge placed on their profile, daters must declare support of government funding for the abortion giant. Earlier this year, Bumble raised $50K for them. According to Planned Parenthood's most recently published annual report, the organization performed 328,348 abortions and received $554.6M in "government health services grants and reimbursements" for the year 2015 – 2016.

Liberals And Conservatives Can’t Even Use The Same Dating Apps

Posted on August 29, 2017

Trumpsingles screenshot smallMARKETWATCH – Aug 28 – When David Goss, co-founder of TrumpSingles.com, first started his dating site for supporters of President Donald Trump, he didn't know how far it would go. But a year later, the country is more divided than ever, and the app is thriving. It has gained ~52k members since Trump has been in office. In February 2017, OkCupid added Trump-related questions to its compatibility survey and found 72% of people thought supporting the president was a deal breaker in relationships. eHarmony has seen the number of users willing to date people of other political stripes shrink dramatically in recent months.

Q&A With OkCupid CEO Elie Seidman

Posted on August 14, 2017

OkCupid CEO Elie Seidman croppedWALL STREET JOURNAL – Aug 13 – After being named CEO of OkCupid in May 2016, Elie Seidman revamped the design of the app to include in-depth info about users and requiring them to answer questions about political beliefs.

Q: What has been the most difficult part about transitioning to CEO of an online dating site?
A: The real question when I started was, what is the core of this brand? The challenge that I saw was how consumers and customers conceptualize the category. We put our focus into "substance over selfies" – connecting based on shared sensibilities.

Q: Could you explain the "substance over selfies" focus?
A: We want people to meet someone based on who they are, not what they look like. We let users create their profiles by answering 15 iconic OkCupid questions.

Q: What is the biggest change happening in online dating right now?
A: Swiping apps went through a novelty phase. We're no longer in that phase.

Q: What does OkCupid do about harassment?
A: We have a very large and effective moderation team in the U.S. It combines artificial intelligence and machine learning to look at data points to see what's happening. If there is something a machine can't make a decision on, it gets kicked over to human moderators.

Q: What has been the most surprising online dating behavior you've learned about your users?
A: Dating habits do vary by city. For example, New York is the very worst U.S. city for guys messaging women, who reply to men's messages only 10% of the time.

Q: What is the biggest difference between meeting people online and meeting people in person?
A: There is an ineffable element of chemistry which you can't tell easily online.

Q: Where do big data and algorithms fall short when it comes to love?
A: The thing that we at OkCupid have going for us is that while we cannot replace chemistry, what we can do is find a lot of people with shared sensibility.

OKCupid Removes Decade-old Workaround For Its Paid Version

Posted on July 31, 2017

Okcupid pic with blindersARSTECHNICA – July 28 – OKCupid users no longer see the "visitors" tab, an "A-list" feature that OKCupid introduced in 2009. Among other features, this automatically informs users whenever someone tapped "like" on their profile, even if they haven't "liked" them back. Those who opt not to pay for A-List had a different path towards this kind of discovery: the free "visitors" tab, which listed every user who looked at their profile. In short, a user could look through and see who looked at them. But as of today, OKCupid now only has one option to reveal that information: A-List subscriptions, which cost $19.95 per month or $59.70 as a six-month bundle.
