The Psychology Of Online Dating

Posted on July 19, 2013

Online dating hearts enterWIRED – July 18 – According to stats, 20% of heterosexual couples and ~70% of same-sex couples met online. The usual criticism of online dating is that it's a hive of airbrushed photos and downright lies. A couple of scientific studies come to conclusions that small lies were not merely self-deceptions, but deliberate. On paid sites people tend to be looking for something more serious, they're more keen to progress offline to actual dates and abusive messages are at a minimum. Psychologist Dr Jessamy Hibberd believes that much of the directness in online dating occurs because all interactions are in a "social vacuum". With no mutual friends to avoid alienating, there's less social pressures to keep behaviour in check. There could also be "grass is greener" attitude inherent in online dating. "We see that people are more willing to leave unsatisfying relationships because there's less friction to finding a new person to date. So, average relationship length comes down, but not because people seek that," says OKCupid co-founder and Match.com CEO Sam Yagan.

OkCupid Will Let Users Pay To Promote Themselves

Posted on July 12, 2013

Okcupid promoteBUZZFEED – July 10 – OKCupid quietly launched a new feature that lets users promote themselves across the site for $2. For 10 minutes, promoted users’ profiles are pushed to the front of the queue in all areas of the site: QuickMatch, Locals, “People You Might Like,” etc. OkCupid found that those 10 minutes give users 30 times more exposure than their profiles would have otherwise gotten in the same amount of time.

The Future Of Dating Is Mobile

Posted on June 11, 2013

Okcupid logo aktualniFORBES – June 11 – Sam Yagan, OKCupid co-founder, is convinced that the future is mobile. But even Yagan admits he hasn’t figured it out. “There’s no effective app for hetero hookups, Yagan notes. One of the two apps Yagan’s most keen on tackling is dating through your social graph. That’s what Tinder, the mobile dating startup that Yagan’s IAC/InterActiveCorp Hatch Labs incubated, is doing. Tinder is now a standalone company and IAC/InterActiveCorp is its lead investor. Tinder guys say they’re innovating on the whole process of dating itself. They’ve all experienced difficulties around meeting new people and agree that rejection sucks.

Star Apps: OKCupid co-Founder Christian Rudder

Posted on June 3, 2013

Okcupid christian rudderCNET NEWS – May 31 - Christian Rudder is a Harvard graduate who's helped launch and sell two successful companies – SparkNotes, in 1999, which sold to Barnes & Noble; OKCupid, in 2004, which sold to Match.com.

Q: What's so special about the OKCupid app?
A: It's a gateway from the OKCupid site to your phone.

Q: Talk to us about some of its best features.
A: We have location-based stuff. Compared to other dating apps, we have deeper profiles.

Q: Any thoughts on other, more hookup-based apps like Grindr, Tindr, and BangWithFriends?
A: Some people are looking for a quick hookup, some for someone to date, and some are looking to get married. OKCupid's app offers you the opportunity to find all of those things.

Q: How have mobile apps changed the online dating space?
A: The location-based factor. The goal of any dating site is for people to meet up in person, and this makes it a lot easier.

Q: How did OKCupid capture that much sought-after market?
A: Not intentionally. I think it's because we designed the product to be savvy and more cutting-edge.

Q: What software is involved in collecting data for the OKTrends blog?
A: MySQL, Excel, and Python.

Sam Yagan On Mixergy

Posted on April 1, 2013

Okcupid sam yagan 2012MIXERGY – Mar 4 – Sam Yagan, the CEO of Match and CEO/Founder of OKCupid.com interviewed
with Andrew Warner on Mixergy, which helps people 'learn from proven
entrepreneurs.'

Sam thought one of his biggest failures was in
2007 when the OKCupid team spent a year trying to
internationalize OKCupid.  They thought it
would be possible to take the OKCupid recipe and extend it but did a bad
job with the technology and business and tried to do it on the cheap
and didn't hire the right talent.

Sam talks about the importance of being straight and critical in the startup environment.  Some love
it, some don’t.

The OKCupid blog worked because it really put OKCupid in the center of conversations
happening around the country.  "You could
talk about an online dating site at work, and with family."  The blog proved that online dating could be cool.

He focused on high risk, high return bets when adding new features
to OKupid.  They would try
something new every couple of months.  If they had a couple of winners a
year that would be great, and would result in 'step-function growth.'
e.g. OKCupid Journals/blogs.  was a fail.
Only a very small portion of users used them, and they tended to be
inhabited by trolls.

Sam states that his personal aim is to have “…learned and experienced a lot.
I’ll probably be an entrepreneur again.”

The Average Woman Has Average Looks. The Average Man Is Unsightly

Posted on March 11, 2013

WSJ – Mar 10 – OkCupid asks male and female users to rate the attractiveness of members of the opposite sex on a six-point scale, in which 0 is the least attractive and 5 is the most. ThFemale attractiveness graphe light line in the nearby chart shows the distribution of female attractiveness as rated by men. As you can see, it is close to a normal distribution–call it the belle curve. That is, the average woman's looks are "medium," or 2.5. Male beauty turns out to be distributed quite abnormally. Women rate an incredible 80% of guys as worse-looking than medium. One possibility is that women are simply pleasanter to look at than men. The OkCupid ratings measure how men see women and how women see men.The heavy lines in the two charts
Male attractiveness graphmeasure the behavior of the rating sex. When it comes to actual messaging, women shift their expectations only just slightly ahead of the curve, which is a healthier pattern than guys' pursuing the all-but-unattainable. And what the divergence between the charts really shows is that looks matter far less to women than to men. That women remain interested in men at all, despite finding most of us aesthetically repugnant, suggests that the attraction has some other basis. It is men's looks that are socially constructed, while female beauty is a force of nature.
