Love In The Time Of GPS

Posted on February 27, 2013

Mobile-dating1CHICAGO TRIBUNE – Feb 27 – 25.3M people accessed personals sites through mobile devices in Dec, versus 21.3M through a fixed computer, according to comScore. Location-based dating apps have been wildly successful in the gay community (Grindr – 4M users) but slower to catch on among heterosexual daters, likely because women are more wary of announcing their location. SinglesAroundMe, which features a map with drop pins showing where nearby singles are, recently launched an "approximate location" option that lets users displace their coordinates by 1 to 2 miles. Tinder scours a user's Facebook connections to see which friends of friends are single and nearby. MeetMoi sends members a push notification if a match is in the vicinity, getting no more exact than "within .2 miles," and only if both parties agree to chat does the app allow a connection. The app has 3.7M users. Of the 4M active users on OkCupid, half of whom access the site through their mobile phones, 1M have the Locals app. OkCupid also recently launched the mobile app Crazy Blind Date, which sets up a blind date — no photos, no profiles. As with online dating, mobile dating started off catering to people looking for casual relationships, but as it becomes mainstream more serious relationship-seekers are using it as well, said Mark Brooks, an analyst and consultant to the Internet dating industry. "It's more natural, you're out and about," said Brooks, who predicts that dating via mobile phone will change the game profoundly because apps can gather instantaneous feedback about how a date went, resulting in better matches. "People don't really know what they want, so the best way to match people is to look at their behaviors," Brooks said. "Your phone is going to get to know you, it is going to get to know your buying behavior."

OkCupid’s Combosaurus Worries Privacy Advocates

Posted on February 15, 2013

Okcupid partial screenshotHUFFINGTON POST – Feb 15 – Combosaurus, the website that launched in beta last month, tests all the data entered into OkCupid by users to see what clusters together. "OkCupid collects extremely sensitive … medical conditions, drug usage, and sexual preferences," Rainey Reitman, activism director at the the Electronic Frontier Foundation. "Users who share this information are doing so to find relationships, likely not realizing the data will be mined for marketing purposes." "Of course it has advertising potential," said Yagan, who noted the team is still figuring out precisely what they're going to do with the product. "This is a treasure trove. Knowing what things are correlated with what. For instance, when someone buys an iPhone, what are the other 10 things they're likely to want to buy?"

With Apps Dating Got Easier

Posted on February 15, 2013

Spark irish dating siteIRISH TIMES – Feb 14 – Companies such as AnotherFriend, OkCupid, PlentyOfFish and Spark each boast millions of messages, chats and other measures of mobile dating success. “The dating industry is moving massively towards mobile technology, with a huge percentage of users going mobile and using apps,” according to internet dating analyst Mark Brooks. Brooks says location-based mobile technology has had to broaden its scope though, to provide the vicinity as opposed to the exact location of users. “Women didn’t want to give away their exact location and GPS technologies were able to do that, showing where a person was within three metres. Now the more successful mobile dating apps provide vicinity-based services using GPS.” Brooks believes the next step in mobile dating is for the app to ask users how the date went. AnotherFriend.com, a dating site which acquired Maybefriends.com last year, has ~90K active users in any three-month period. ~20% of the site’s users log on from their smartphones, with traffic to the dating site’s app peaking at commuting times. Brian O’Neill, founder of Irish dating site Spark, says: “Some 25%of our 15K users now access the site via their smartphone.” POF has also seen massive growth in terms of apps, with 50% of the site’s Irish users now using the iPhone and android apps on a regular basis – a 250% increase in usage of the site’s mobile apps since 2011.

Dating Sites Remake The Introductions

Posted on January 30, 2013

Tawkify logoBOSTON GLOBE – Jan 29 – Tawkify, a blind-date matchmaking site, bills itself as “the new old way to date.” It is one of several matchmaking start-ups tailored to millennials who seek companionship, but who have no interest in enduring a string of traditional one-on-one dates to find it. “Social club” is how Grouper is billed. Grouper uses members’ Facebook profiles to set up a date between two people — who each invite two friends along, increasing the odds of clicking with someone. MeetCute sends potential matches to a location but doesn’t reveal them to each other, forcing participants to connect with their MeetCute match or with a total stranger. OkCupid just launched Crazy Blind Date, an app that lets users pick a location and a day, then sit back and get paired up someone to go out with. Such casual or creative meet-ups may offer more “guaranteed fun” than the typical dinner or drinks. Making online meet-ups as relaxed as possible could be the way to keep young people on the Web dating scene, said a Northwestern University psychology professor, Eli Finkel, who studies romantic relationships.

How Facebook Graph Search Could Disrupt Online Dating

Posted on January 22, 2013

Facebook graph search pictureMASHABLE – Jan 22 – Last week Facebook reps demonstrated several uses for Graph Search, ranging from recruiting to searching for restaurant recommendations. Then a Facebook employee stood on stage and searched for friends of my friends who are single and living in San Fran. "Facebook is moving in on the essence of online dating," said Dan Slater, author of Love in the Time of Algorithms, a history of online dating and its impact on our culture, which comes out on Thursday. With Graph Search, Facebook members can search for other singles based on their interests, education, age, hometown, current city and more. Kingfish Labs raised $500K in early 2012 to use Facebook for dating, but its first Facebook app, Yoke, struggled to take off. "Facebook Like data was often not fresh or comprehensive enough to serve as a match-making tool", the company says. The stock for IAC, the parent company of Match and OkCupid, dropped by ~ 2% after Facebook announced Graph Search. "For online dating businesses it could either be the best thing ever, or it could be the beginning of the end," Slater says. Facebook could potentially help the industry by removing whatever "cultural barrier" remains for online dating.

OkCupid Launches ‘Crazy Blind Date’ App

Posted on January 15, 2013

Okcupid crazyblinddate screenshotPRESS RELEASE – Jan 15 – Crazy Blind Date (CBD) uses math to set singles up on blind dates with a few hours notice.  “People will say that CBD is too crazy,” said Sam Yagan, OkCupid Co-Founder (CEO Match.com), “But for a whole generation of young singles, it’s going to be a great adventure, and a great complement to traditional online dating.”

Users choose which nights to go on dates. Pick their favorite bar/coffee shop. CBD does the rest and sends a confirmation to both parties. One hour before the scheduled date users can anonymously IM, so they can find each other.  After the date ends, CBD collects feedback. Users can vouch for their date by purchasing CBD “Kudos” for them. This incentivizes good behavior. The more Kudos daters collect, the more dates they get.

“Never before has a dating app allowed singles to pay on a per-date basis, and to vary that payment based on the quality of the date itself,” continued Yagan.

To celebrate the launch of CBD, OkCupid, has named today, “LOVE IS BLIND” day. Every one of the ten million photos on OkCupid has been removed from the site.  Today they'll make their dating decisions based on words and wits alone. (CBD was designed in collaboration with Huge).

About OkCupid Blogging

Posted on January 11, 2013

Okcupid blog logoFORBES – Jan 11 - OkCupid’s most popular blogs
posts were read by millions of people, and that was excluding existing
OkCupid users. Startups who are hoping to fill in the “how do we grow?”
blank by saying “Well, we’ll just write a blog, like OkCupid did.” Maybe
hire a “data scientist.” But:

  • OkCupid’s blog worked because they had sexy data.
  • Christian Rudder, an amazing writer who also studied math at Harvard,
wrote the blog. The posts each took him four to eight weeks of full-time
    work.
