BUSINESS INSIDER – Feb 14 – Data from POF reveals that users spend ~10 minutes creating their profile, on average – but those who spend ~20 minutes are twice as likely to leave the site in a relationship. Users who indicate that they speak a second language receive significantly more messages. One likely reason, said POF data scientist Michael McDermott, is that these people seem more thoughtful and open.

Valentine’s Day: The Most Active Day for dating apps
BUSINESS INSIDER UK – Feb 1 – Dating app Happn says its most active day in the US is February 7, one week before Valentine's Day. This makes sense, in a slightly depressing way. People don't want to have a first day on Valentine's Day. A second date on Valentine's Day seems much more reasonable. Happn also saw a spike in the week after New Year's. New year, fresh start in finding a soul mate, it seems.

BUSINESS INSIDER – Jan 28 – Dating app Hinge now allows users to pay $99-a-month for a personal assistant that will message their dates for them. This new feature is called "Audrey", and is currently in a testing mode.

Three Day Rule Matches Users With Their Ex
BUSINESS INSIDER – Nov 22 – Instead of personality quizzes or a swiping interface, Three Day Rule uses machine learning and facial recognition software to find clients matches. Founded in 2013, the startup believes people are attracted to particular face shapes. It asks clients (who join for upwards of $7k) for photos of their exes, and then pairs them with users in its database who have similar facial structures.

Tinder’s Competitors Are Banking On Its Sleazy Image
BUSINESS INSIDER – Nov 5 – When Tinder launched in 2012, every match felt like an adrenaline rush. But those matches are no longer quite as exciting. A 2016 study looked at the user reviews of 97 dating apps and analyzed how their quality scores have changed over the past year. Tinder experienced the largest YOY decline. In a 2016 survey by Consumers' Research, 13% of Tinder users reported relationships lasting longer than one month. Its photo-based interface probably contributed to its hookup image. Apps like Bumble, Hinge, Happn, Coffee Meets Bagel, Siren, Her are not heavily photo-based. Bumble has a similar interface as Tinder, but doesn't have the reputation of being a hookup app. That's because only women can message their matches first on Bumble. Men seem to like the app because women seem to take more initiative in starting a conversation. Siren, which launched in late 2015, abandons the swipe interface entirely. It features a daily question and a feed that displays users' answers.
It Looks Like Hinge Is Going Back To Freemium Model
BUSINESS INSIDER – Nov 4 – In October, Hinge launched a totally new app focused on relationships (versus hookups). After a free trial everyone on Hinge was supposed to pay $7 per month. Hinge's CEO was shunning the freemium model. He said the people who pay tended to be "power users" of swiping apps. Now it seems that he has changed his mind and is not going to force everyone to pay. This is what the app sent to its users today: "As an Early Member, you've helped create a community of people who want more. To thank you, we'd like to give you Hinge free, forever." What Hinge is offering is a "Basic Membership" with limited features.
Ashley Madison Has A Long Way To Go
BUSINESS INSIDER – Oct 26 – The parent company of Ashley Madison is trying to recover from a terrible year. Now rebranded as ruby Corp., the company formerly known as Avid Life Media is currently under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission. Its new leadership team thinks it can turn all of that negativity around. It took nearly a year for the company to find a new CEO. In March 2016, a corporate headhunter reached out to Rob Segal, a marketer by trade. Since July, Ashley Madison has undergone a number of changes to win users back. One of the most notable is its pivot away from infidelity. Instead of the tagline "Life's short. Have an affair," it's website says simply: "Find your moment." "In the past it was very male-targeted," Segal said, adding that the rebrand was meant to make it more inclusive and "open-minded." The company also implemented Level 1 PCI Compliance for credit card processing, which means it has to undergo annual internal audits onsite and have its network scanned by an outside vendor. Female chat bots are also gone, according to the company.

Most Indian Dating Apps Cater To People Who Are Serious
BUSINESS INSIDER – Oct 26 – Today, online dating is all about swiping left or right on smartphones. Unlike the West, where one night stands is not seen as a social taboo, in India, people browsing dating apps, often look for a long time commitment. "We aren't like Western dating apps, which are primarily for 'hook-ups'. Nor are we traditional desi matrimonial sites. We've tried to remove the taboo from the term 'dating' in the Indian world by associating it with safety and compatibility", said Sachin Bhatia, CEO and Co-Founder of TrulyMadly, a dating app. Another dating app, Woo, has started for people looking for a relationship. Woo has a Trust Score for every user, based on the amount of information a user volunteers to share with the app. This impacts the matches she/he receives. There is also a manual verification system in place to double check profiles.
