The Subtle Way Dating Apps Reinforce Our Racial Biases

Posted on November 23, 2018

Dating apps iconsHUFFINGTON POST – Nov 22 – A new study out of Cornell University suggests that dating app algorithms don't do us any favors as far as sexual racism goes. To conduct the study, the researchers downloaded the 25 top-grossing apps in the iOS app store as of fall 2017, including Tinder, OKCupid, Hinge, Grindr, Meetville and Coffee Meets Bagel. Then they looked for features that could affect users' discriminatory behavior toward other users. This included terms of service, their sorting, filtering and matching algorithms and how users are presented to each other. They found that most apps employ algorithms that cater to users' past personal preferences and the matching history. So if a user had matched with white users repeatedly in the past, the algorithm was more likely to suggest more white people as "good matches" moving forward.

India: Tinder’s Pricing Based On Age Is The Reason To Regulate How Companies Use Data

Posted on June 11, 2018

Tinder pic2HUFFINGTON POST – June 10 – Tinder is charging a 25-year-old Rs 520 per month for its premium service Gold, a 33-year-old woman pays Rs 1,099 and a 36-year-old man pays Rs 1,600 for the identical service. The prices are slightly more for users of Apple devices over Android devices. “Tinder is offering exactly the same services for different prices to different individuals. That is unreasonable,” said Suresh Kumar an advocate with Legal Help Line India. He suggested that users can file a complaint with the Competition Commission Of India and challenge Tinder’s ‘unreasonable’ pricing. But Tinder is not the only company using user’s data to its own advantage. In India, banks are building apps that read client’s text messages, and analyse social media posts to assess loan applications.

Romance Scam Victims Say Facebook Dating Is A Train Wreck In The Making

Posted on May 3, 2018

Facebook scammersHUFFINGTON POST – May 2 – Not everybody is thrilled by Tuesday's announcement that Facebook is planning to run its own dating platform on the site. Facebook has done a poor job of policing its platform and keeping it free from scammers, said multiple victims. "It's a train wreck waiting to happen," said the moderator of Romance Scammers Exposed, a Facebook group that helps victims identify stolen photos used by romance scammers in West Africa, where many online scammers are based. "It's going to be party time in West Africa," said Ruth Grover, who runs ScamHaters, a site that posts warnings about online profiles that appear to be scammers. Facebook said nothing about security and identity verification.

Dating App Transdr Aims To Be A Tinder For Trans People

Posted on April 24, 2018

Transdr promo picHUFFINGTON POST – Apr 24 – The app, which launched last month and is currently free, operates just like Tinder. Transdr's co-founder Sean Kennedy described the app as "a new place for trans people who are looking for serious relationships." Transdr arrives at a time when existing apps have already expanded their services to include trans users. In 2016, Tinder announced an update that made it possible for users to specify gender identities like "transgender," "trans man," "trans woman," and "gender queer." Grindr followed suit last November, offering users customizable gender identity and pronoun fields.

Q&A With eHarmony’s VP Of Content, Jeannie Assimos

Posted on December 19, 2017

Eharmony Jeannie AssimosHUFFINGTON POST – Dec 13 –

Q: VP of Content is so inspirational to many of us. Tell us about your career trajectory.
A: Since I was a kid, I've been interested in telling stories and writing. I pursued a degree in cinema. My career began at Entertainment Tonight (ET). Later I quit and the eharmony job landed in my lap three weeks later. Nine years later, I've learned so much about dating and relationships.

Q: What piqued your interest in the dating and relationship industry?
A: Who isn't interested in telling stories about love, breakups, and dating?

Q: How do you think technology has played a role in modern dating?
A: Technology connects us like never before. It is easier than ever to secure a date.

Q: What are some of the challenges eharmony sees?
A: Getting people to look beyond 2-3 photos and read what a potential match has to say on their profile continues to present itself as a challenge.

Q: How 2nd wave apps are playing a role in modern dating?
A: I welcome all of them. When swiping fatigue sets in, I would hope these people would come and try eHarmony.

Q: What are some of the top dating concerns your users report?
A: 18 to 24 year olds were most worried about not getting responses to the messages. In contrast, 50 to 64 year olds were afraid of being catfished.

Q: What can we do to avoid these things?
A: Know what you are looking for in a partner. If you do find someone online who looks promising, move it to a real-life interaction as soon as possible. Meet someone in a public place, let a few friends know where you are going, and get yourself there.
