Q&A With DateMy’s 26 Year Old Founder – Rachael Wardle

Posted on December 5, 2014

Datemy Rachael WardleHUFFINGTON POST – Dec 4 – Rachael Wardle, 26, has launched datemy.co.uk, an online matchmaking site that encourages singles' nearest and dearest (sibling, daughter, son) to find them matches and help find love.

Q: How did you get the idea for "Datemy”?
A: I was inspired by a real life matchmaking story. My dad was a single widow when I was growing up. He was set up with a family friend and went on to marry two years later. Datemy was originally going to be a single parent matchmaking platform, but a lot of people know someone single they would love to set up.

Q: How did you get the money for it?
A: I crowd funded datemy back in January on banktothefuture.com.

Q: What is the ambition for the business?
A: For datemy to be an international and profitable brand.

Grindr App’s Worldwide Impact

Posted on November 27, 2013

Grindr logo new dec 13HUFFINGTON POST – Nov 26 – Joel Simkhai, the founder and CEO of Grindr, believes he has an “opportunity to make a difference.” In 2011 he launched Grindr4Equality, an effort to use the app to help create awareness and organize. Grindr is the only option for men in countries like Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan where gay men can go to jail for being who they are. That ability to connect gay men makes Grindr a powerful organizing tool. ~100K Grindr users signed a petition against Russia's “gay propaganda” law and users helped to raise $107K to stop anti-gay legislation in Singapore.

Facebook Graph Search To Remove Online Dating Stigma

Posted on August 20, 2013

Facebook-Graph-SearchHUFFINGTON POST – Aug 19 – Facebook's rollout of "Graph Search" has created uproar in the online dating space. Online dating CEO's, investors and entrepreneurs have become concerned that graph search would do what dating sites traditionally could not — meaningfully connect singles through friends and common interests — and therefore drive traffic away from dating sites. One of the search fields includes "relationship status," which enables you to specially search for "singles," thus making graph search a de facto dating feature. Facebook has actually done a huge favor for the entire online dating industry. Given that only 1 in 5 singles visit a dating site each month, the biggest opportunity for growth for dating sites is to remove the stigma associated with using online dating sites, and thus expose the other 80% of singles to online dating.

Tinder Is Not Without Flaws

Posted on July 12, 2013

Tinder fake profilesHUFFINGTON POST – July 11 – Cybersecurity company Symantec had come across fake Tinder profiles, which spam people and direct them to an apparent porn site designed to take their money. On Tinder you fill out a simple profile and post a few photos of yourself. You are then presented with strangers' profiles one by one and you can swipe the person's profile left to essentially "pass" on them and right to "like" them. If both people "like" one another they are connected through an in-app chat feature. Tinder doesn't currently have any way to report spam in the app. "We are aware of the spammers and have already taken precautions to prevent them from bothering our users," said Tinder spokesperson. People are likely less skeptical of profiles they see on Tinder, since most of the information on someone's profile (name, photos, etc.) come directly from Facebook. In order to make a fake Tinder profile, one first has to make a fake Facebook profile with a fake name and fake photos.

Mornings Are The Best Time To Hit On Someone

Posted on July 9, 2013

Sparkology logoHUFFINGTON POST – July 3 – Sparkology, a dating site for young professionals, examined ~45K initial messages among their members and found out that messages sent between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. are nearly twice as likely to get a response as those sent in the evening. Also those who message in the evening are all competing against each other. Whereas the early birds sneak in and get the recipients undivided attention.

Recent Changes To POF

Posted on June 7, 2013

Pof.com logo use january 2012HUFFINGTON POST – June 5 – Markus Frind is trying to eliminate those on POF who are looking to hook up rather than to find a real relationship. Frind attributes the recent increase in hook up offers to the increase in mobile application use. "We went from 20% mobile to 70% in a year-and-a-half." He relayed that the mobile app use is later at night and more casual with more condensed messages."When men send messages, they try to do it in the minimum amount of words possible," Frind noted. "So what they do is use certain combinations of words. So you pick 30 words and you block those words and you solve the problem." Feedback from his recent email and changes to the site has been overwhelmingly favorable.

Swoon Dating App Connects With Facebook For Speedy Matchmaking

Posted on April 15, 2013

Swoon app logoHUFFINGTON POST – Apr 14 – Swoon launched last month as part of a larger initiative by Tagged to branch out into standalone apps. It launched Android to start, an iOS version is expected in May. Users connect their Facebook account — no questionnaires to fill out, and are flipping through a bunch of Facebook profile photos with first names, ages, mutual friends and mutual interests listed. They flick a card in any direction or hit an 'X' to move to the next one. If they are interested in someone, they hit a giant green checkmark. The other party is notified of interest only if they are interested as well. Another app, Yoke, was based on the same concept, utilizing the Facebook Social Graph and Interest Graph to play matchmaker.

Ashley Madison CEO Noel Biderman Talks Marriage With His Wife

Posted on April 2, 2013

Ashleymadison logo new apr 2010HUFFINGTON POST – Apr 3 – Creator Noel Biderman
has been happily married for 10 years. His wife Amanda was featured on
the company's new billboard campaign.

Q: Amanda, how did you react when Noel first told you about his plan to create an infidelity dating site?

Amanda: Originally, I wanted to make sure it wasn’t an emotional or personal issue.

Noel: She saw the passion in which I wanted to pursue this and she wanted to match that passion. I knew I had a true partner.

Q: Has running a site like AshleyMadison informed how you behave in your own marriage in any way?

Noel: Ironically, I talk about infidelity more than any man on the planet.

Amanda: This business has just made us stronger and more communicative.
