Q&A With Dmitry Volkov About His Art Installation At Burning Man

Posted on September 13, 2017

Dmitry volkovHUFFINGTON POST – Sep 11 – Burning Man attracts a wide range of people who are enthusiastic about experiencing one of the most moving, spiritual and unforgettable experiences of their lives. One of these people is Dmitry Volkov, an owner of Social Discovery Ventures (AnastasiaDate.com & AsianDate.com), investor and organizer of the OraculeTang camp at this year's Burning Man festival. The OraculeTang camp has been featured by Business Insider as one of the most incredible art installations at this year's Burning Man festival. Four large, inflatable figures of green aliens, ranging from 4.5m to 12m tall, represented the sacral objects for all the aliens and the Burners who believe in the existence of extraterrestrial life, and who worship alien civilizations.

Q: Who are you and what do you do for a living?
A: I'm an entrepreneur, investor, philosopher and contemporary art collector.

Q: What brought you to Burning Man?
A: I had heard about Burning Man many times. I became certain that I wanted to go when visiting my friend and philosopher, D. Dennett. One of Dennett's friends shared the story of Burning Man with me as well as his experiences out on The Playa.

Q: What inspired you to build the OraculeTang camp and what does it represent?
A: In 2015 we brought a gigantic robotic orangutang – OraculeTang. He was both an animal and a robot. The idea was to build a non-organic, intelligent animal that could communicate with humans. This year's Burning Man theme was all about radical inclusion – where people with different and alternative lifestyles come together and embrace each other's differences.

Q: You had recently met Dalai Lama. How was this experience and has it given you any new visions?
A: This relates to one of my philosophy projects. For many years, I have tried to contribute to developing bridges between philosophers in Russia and Western analytic philosophers. The Greenland conference I organized in 2014 is an example of this. The project I am doing with Dalai Lama is an attempt to stretch our hand to the East. Buddhists have developed a lot of very valuable ideas in ethics, as well as metaphysical ideas, like the concept of self as fiction. I think this is both interesting and worth exploring further.

Work Life Balance Q&A With eHarmony CEO, Grant Langston

Posted on September 2, 2017

Eharmony grant langston officialHUFFINGTON POST – Aug 29 –

Q: What does your day look like?
A: There is no typical day in my life. Some days I have 10 meetings, and each is about a completely different part of the business. My first activity every day is crafting my calendar. John Wooden said, "Make every day your masterpiece," and that is brilliant advice.

Q: What are your work life balance goals?
A: I'm a big believer in the stoic philosophy of only being focused on the things that you control. I can't control whether people use eHarmony, but I can drive our staff to make our apps work better, match better, and be easier to use. To be truly effective in my role, I need to spend time with my children. I have to exercise and stay physically strong. Stephen Covey called it "sharpening the saw". If you're going to work every day with a dull saw, you're not doing anyone any good.

Q: How has your work life balance changed throughout the years?
A: I can remember in my 20's being in the grip of a terrible depression. I went to see a psychologist. I told her that my real passion was making music, and I just wanted an undemanding day-job to make money for expenses. She said, "This is why you're depressed." She told me that I had plenty of mental and physical energy to work an engaging job in the daytime and play music at night. It completely changed my life.

Q: Do you have any tips for balancing career, kids, and the marriage?
A: People like to say, "Marriage takes work." I think that's crazy. Marriage takes attention. My best advice for work and family is simple…When I'm at work. I'm at work. I don't chat with my wife or friends at work. But when work is over…I'm not working!

An Exclusive Dating App Leverages APIs And Algorithms To Help Daters Succeed

Posted on August 17, 2017

Theinndercircle logo 2017HUFFPOST – Aug 16 – The concept of swiping has gotten old and hasn't proven to be the most effective. Entrepreneur, David Vermeulen, recognized the lack of features in many dating apps on the market. He launched The Inner Circle, an exclusive dating app that considers applicants based on their Facebook and LinkedIn profiles. The app uses a face-recognition algorithm to detect the highest quality photos from a user's Facebook profile. A major goal of The Inner Circle is to help bring back actual human interactions. Under the app's "discover section" users can click on events to see a list of upcoming events in their city.

Dating For Money May Actually Work

Posted on July 25, 2017

Dating for moneyHUFFINGTON POST – July 25 – It is said money doesn't buy happiness, but it does result in experiencing happiness. Economists from Case Western University were able to prove that increased household earnings caused improved emotional well-being. 75% of women in a ForbesWoman survey said they would turn down a marriage proposal from a man who is unemployed. Neil Clark Warren, founder of eHarmony.com famously proclaimed, "A couple needs to be within one standard deviation of each other in intelligence (10 points in either direction)". Intelligence strongly correlates with income, which is certainly a key underlying component of dating service The League.

Talking Online Dating with eHarmony’s New CEO

Posted on July 24, 2017

Eharmony grant langston officialHUFFINGTON POST – July 18 – Grant Langston took over the helm of eHarmony last year.

Q: How do you see the current state of the industry?
A: There is a kind of fatigue that sets in with swiping services. Lots of casual people pedaling around exchanging "Hey, What's Up?" texts. The number of actual dates is, often, pretty low. I think most people want to know that the app or service they're using is going to give them a better result than meeting someone in a bar. That's the premise for our business.

Q: What are some of the challenges?
A: eHarmony is a 17-year-old tech company and that alone is a challenge. Our communication platform was antiquated. We trashed it and built a new system that is faster and helps create more communication between people.

Q: What makes eHarmony different?
A: eHarmony is built on science. Looking forward, I think people are going to want to understand why they are being matched to someone. eHarmony is also leading the industry in background verification.

Q: You worked your way up the corporate ladder to become the CEO. Do you have any advice for executives hoping to follow in your footsteps at their respective organizations?
A: Every company and every CEO I know wants three things from employees…. energy, execution, and ideas. You want to be an excellent source of these.

The Fears Involved In Launching An App

Posted on February 28, 2017

Dateplay logoHUFFINGTON POST – Feb 24 – Vana Koutsomitis released her dating app DatePlay on Valentine's Day in the App Store. "It was absolutely terrifying. There was still so much to fix", she says. The team sat down with one of their mentors and told him about all their issues. They were considering postponing the launch yet again. He said: "Just get on with it and release the app! It is never going to be perfect." One of the biggest issues that early stage startups phase is running out of cash before gaining traction. Each delay that you have is costly and the more time you spend working on the app, the more money you spend. Pull the trigger and launch your product! Even if it's not completely ready.

Q&A With Tinder India’s CEO Taru Kappoor

Posted on February 16, 2017

Tinder taru kapoor1HUFFINGTON POST – Feb 15 – Tinder's acceptance in India led to a spurt of similar Indian apps like TrulyMadly and Woo.

Q: What's is the dominant perception around Tinder in India?
A: In the past 18 months, we have noticed a rapid evolution. There has been a surge in interest, most definitely. However, most Indians still find online dating apps creepy.

Q: The global image of Tinder is that of 'the hookup app', did you try to change that for India?
A: We believe that Tinder is a platform to make connections.

Q: Why did you come up with that 'sanskaari' ad for the app?
A: It's just an ad showing a girl going on a Tinder date and her mom is okay with it. That video, like several other efforts we are making, is meant to make online dating normal in India.

Q: Why did Tinder decide to launch in India?
A: We opened our office in India in 2016. But people were already using Tinder by then. We had decided to take the plunge in the country because India has always had an online matrimony market, not so much a online dating market.

Sapio: A New App That Makes Matches Based On IQ

Posted on February 9, 2017

Sapio logoHUFFINGTON POST – Feb 9 – Kristin Tynski, her wife Kelsey Libert, her twin brother Dan Tynski, and her brother-in-law Nick Santillo started dating app Sapio for sapiosexuals. Sapiosexual translates to a person who finds intelligence to be a sexually attractive quality in others. Coming from an LGBTQ family, Kristin wanted a dating app that wasn't only for straight people and that "focused more on the mind and the heart than simply on looks." The most notable facet of Sapio is the Question Explorer, which is filled with 300 open-ended questions in 21 categories. Tynski says that the more questions users answer, the more their visibility grows with others who care about the same things.
