PlentyofFish Surpasses 10 Zillion Members

Posted on August 29, 2006

Plentyoffish_logo_06PRNEWSWIRE — PlentyofFish had 300,000 users log in this Monday. 10 zillion singles have signed up on PlentyofFish since the site was started in 2003, but unlike many dating sites, the old inactive profiles have been removed. So there's no longer 10 zillion profiles sitting on PlentyofFish. Just the people who are active, that will probably respond.  Mike Jones, CEO of Userplane, which was recently acquired by AOL, said, "since the inception of our relationship with PlentyofFish we have seen unequaled growth in their usage of instant messaging."  Markus Frind commented, "I continually see sites boasting about how many registered members they have. Yes, they may have millions of members registered, but that's to their detriment. We cull and clean out old profiles once they become inactive and unresponsive. Most other sites prefer to keep the old profiles in place for excessive periods. It's good for conversions, but bad for users. I won't do that to my users. I don't have to, we're free."  Markus automated the PlentyofFish site with personality based matchmaking based, not on what people say they want, but rather on what they indicate they want through their search behavior. The PlentyofFish mission is to cut the crap and do the work for singles who want to meet without shelling out hundreds of dollars for services that should be free.

PlentyofFish Larger Than Other Free Dating Services Combined

Posted on August 25, 2006

Logo_plentyoffish_2OPW — Aug 25 — I took a look over PlentyofFish this morning to see Markus is listing PlentyofFish as the, "3rd Largest Dating site in the world, larger than all other free dating services combined."  Looking at the Hitwise rankings…he’s certainly larger than all the other free dating sites combined at this stage, but for the world?  What free dating sites do you know of worldwide?  Your comments please.  I just came across Amoureux which is big in France and makes it’s money off advertising and mobile usage fees.  – Mark Brooks

TrueDater; True or False Profiles

Posted on August 7, 2006

STAR LEDGER — Aug 7 — People can post reviews of their dates on TrueDater.com and also plug in a prospective date to see if anyone else has posted a comment about the person. More than a half million people have used TrueDater since the site launched last year. TreuDater staffers monitor the remarks.  Mark Brooks, onlinepersonalswatch.com, said "I think it answers a definite need in the online dating market."  Brooks said Friendster allows people to write testimonials about a date, but the person being reviewed has to approve it, "so nothing negative gets in." Brooks said TrueDater is the kind of site that makes people think more about their reputation, which is a new issue in online dating. Marcus Frind, founder of plentyoffish.com said both men and women are equally guilty when it comes to fudging profiles. "With women, it's weight; for men, it's height. A third party (giving an assessment) is the simplest way to go."  "You have to be honest," said Moreno, Ph.D. student in social psychology at Rutgers University. "The picture is the hook, it gets you in. You see a cute picture and you click on it. I met one guy for dinner a couple of weeks ago and his picture resembled him, but you would not have been able to pick him out of a crowd based on his picture."  Moreno suggested singles should not upload their best shot. That way dates can be pleasantly surprised on the first meeting. Eric Straus, president of Cupid.com, said "I don't think it adds all that much to the process," he said. "People tend to exaggerate and I think that's the nature of the beast."

AOL Search Data Shows Users Planning to Murder Wife

Posted on August 7, 2006

OPW — Aug 7 — Markus Frind, CEO of PlentyofFish.com, from his blog 'The Paradigm Shift'…

Markus Frind – AOL, http://research.aol.com, released a list of 20 million + searches by 500,000 AOL users.  Contained in this list are social security numbers, credit cards and other personal information.   There are some truly scary things in this database.  There are hundreds of searches from people looking to kill themselves and even more scary are searches from users that seem to be looking to commit murder.

Check out the search history for  user 17556639: how to kill your wife, wife killer, how to kill a wife, poop, dead people, pictures of dead people, killed people, dead pictures, murder photo, steak and cheese, photo of death, death, dead people photos, http://www.murderdpeople.com, decapatated photos, car crashes3, car crash photo.

This is the very data that google won a legal battle to keep from the government. I think because of the data contained in these search results the government is going to be taking a lot closer look at the search industry and things will definitely change. Techcrunch has more on it here.

Mark Brooks: This story made Reuters and the Financial Times earlier today.  I was interviewed for an Associated Press piece on this back in January.  I don't have a problem with the government seeing search data in the aggregate as long as it is completely anonymous and identifying searches are removed from the data (i.e. people searching for their own SS numbers).  Markus thinks AOL, Yahoo and MSN are crazy for passing on the search data to the government because the government will surely use it to create new regulations.  Markus told me via IM "Yahoo and AOL could fall under the definition of social networking as users have a profile and Yahoo even bills their search as 'social search.'  What will lawmakers do?  Will this industry be facing regulation?"  Good point.  Your comments please.

PlentyofFish Speed Dating Record Attempt a Success

Posted on August 1, 2006

PofOPW — July 31 — On July 22nd PlentyofFish attempted to establish a world record for the largest speed dating event held under one roof. I asked Markus how the event went.  It was a success. Markus said, "the hosts will have the count in the next few days, they have to count all the registrations.  Someone at the door counted 251 couples holding hands and leaving at the end of the night. We had too many women so they had to turn a few away." The Guinness world record event rules were incredibly stringent. The whole event had to run like clockwork. Here are the pictures from the event. What’s even more amazing is the teamwork that was required to bring the event together. It was all completed by volunteers. PlentyofFish is the last remaining, absolutely, really, no REALLY, completely free internet dating site. (Others such as OKcupid are mostly free but still have membership options with added features available for a few bucks a month).  It continues to move up the internet dating site rankings and is currently ranked #2 in Canada (Comscore) and #6 in USA (Hitwise). – Mark Brooks

Plentyoffish Attempts Speed Dating World Record

Posted on July 10, 2006

Logo_plentyoffish_1PR NEWSWIRE — July 10 — Free dating site, Plentyoffish.com, stirs Burlington, Ontario singles into action for Guinness world record attempt at the largest speed dating event under one roof. Markus Frind started Plentyoffish.com out of his Vancouver apartment after being frustrated at high priced internet dating alternatives. Markus commented, "I think the top paid dating sites are a little surprised at how my site has grown recently." Markus still runs Plentyoffish as a one man operation and refuses to sell the site, despite several offers in the tens of millions of dollars.

Mark Brooks: Cupid recently attempted and achieved a speed dating record for having 150 parties in 92 cities and nearly 3000 attendees. OPW Post Link. This record is different in that it is under one roof.

Userplane Anonymous Calling

Posted on July 10, 2006

Userplane_2BUSINESS WIRE –July 10 — Expanding the capabilities of its Flash voice and video communication platform, Userplane, a pioneer in community software, announced that its unique Anonymous Calling feature has triggered more than 20,000 calls worldwide during the past 60 days. Userplane Anonymous Calling is now seamlessly enabled for every instant messaging conversation within the Userplane Webmessenger and Webchat client. "The new anonymous calling feature in the Userplane IM has been a great help in building user retention," said Markus Frind, CEO of Plentyoffish. Said Michael Jones, cofounder and CEO of Userplane. "This service enables two users to connect via phone completely anonymously – without giving away any personal information." Userplane will be exhibiting at the 9th Internet Dating Conference in San Francisco on July 13-14th, 2006.

Mark Brooks: Phone Matrix Privatecall is the leading alternative option and can be integrated into instant messaging clients. 'Throw away numbers' are another option. A throw away number should look the same as a regular number i.e. 415-762-8869, not 415-762-8869 ext. 3565.  Also, if I'm dialing from 212-444-1636 then it should be possible for me to call out from this number and have the service mask the number so it looks like I'm calling from 415-762-8869. Watch this space 😉

OPW Interview – Plentyoffish CEO, Markus Frind

Posted on June 30, 2006

Markus_frind_1OPW INTERVIEW — June 30, 2006 — I met Markus at iDate2005 and barely gave him the time of day; a hokey little site called Plentyoffish. I have a lot more respect for him these days. Plentyoffish is free and has snuck up on the Canadian market and has now established itself in the American market. It's #5 on the Hitwise USA rankings for May 2006, no less. (See OnlinePersonalsRankings.com for official international online personals site rankings courtesy of Hitwise, Comscore and Nielsen). Time for another chat with Markus… – Mark Brooks

Why is Plentyoffish a Web 2.0 site?
Because, like other Web 2.0 sites, Plentyoffish is driven by the community. There are one million people who have moderating powers in the Plentyoffish forum and there's several thousand people attending parties all over the country every week. And it's all organized and done by users. So unlike the paid sites, Plentyoffish is run by the users.

I read that you had a check for $900K from Google for two months Ad Sense sales. What sort of pay-per-click (PPC) spend does it take to generate this?
I don't spend more then 10% of my monthly income on advertising. Pretty much the entire thing is viral.  I never did any pay-per-click at the start, not in the first two years and then after that it was just a growing. The community was really built by word of mouth. There was a need for a free site and because no one else was providing it, it just grew like a weed. A lot of people just don't want to pay for dating sites. I'm providing a service for millions of people and it's costing me barely anything. These other sites, they're all just out for people's money.

Does Plentyoffish.com really represent a threat to the dating industry?  Are many of your members also members of paid dating sites?
Well I think it really depends on the market. On cities where there's a lot of wealth and a lot of money, I don't think Plentyoffish will have that deep of a market penetration but in other areas, for instance in Canada, Plentyoffish is by far the largest dating site.  And Lava Life if you look at all the rankings, it's lost about 50% of its traffic in the last year.

People are using three dating sites on average. So right now they're probably using Plentyoffish and two paid dating sites. We won't know until there are two or three other huge free dating sites if the paid dating industry is in trouble.

How many employees do you have? How many uniques a month do you get and how many servers does Plentyoffish.com run on?
Just me, myself and I. Google says it's over 3.4 or 3.5 million uniques a month. I run Google analytics which records all my traffic.

I have five or six servers; one database server, one web server, an image server, a mail server…it's a dating site; it's not rocket science. You don't need thousands of servers.

I have highly optimized the database and the site, so I guess normally everyone else is using two to three hundred servers and I'm doing what they are doing with more complexity on top of it. I've invented stuff like multi-dimensional wheel sieve. I create very advanced algorithms. The more you search and the more you use the site, the more it limits your view of the people you see. So if you only message smokers, then it doesn't matter what pages you're on, you're only going to see smokers. It generates a database on the site that's built around your preferences, which is something that no other dating site is capable of doing yet. It's technically not feasible for them at least using known algorithms. I invented algorithms that no one else thought were feasible.

What you say you want and what you actually want are two different things. It hardly ever corresponds on a dating site. So I just track a user and see what they're actually doing on the site and then show them matches based on their actual surfing preferences. My site is deceptively simple but no one knows just how complex it is under the surface.

Let's go on to the final question. What's your advice for other Web 2.0 start up web entrepreneur's about making money?
Build something useful, simple in ways that people will use. Explore things like Ad Sense, affiliate programs, and just explore ways of making money. Most 2.0 companies will never make a dime and they're not built to make a dime. So I would start looking at how to make money before you even design or think about starting a business.

So what are your goals for 2006 through 2007?
I really don't plan more then three months ahead. Everything always changes constantly but I suppose it would be to incorporate social networking features and to stop Myspace and Facebook from taking over the dating industry. Myspace has 15 million unique log in's a day. The entire dating industry in this space has maybe a million to a million and a half.  And from the polls I've taken on my site, something like 30% of the people use Myspace…the same people who are using the paid dating sites.  User psychology is very weird. People on Myspace say they're not just there to date but actually that's what most of them are there looking for.

Tech Leaders Gather in San Francisco for Supernova2006

Posted on June 29, 2006

Supernova SF CHRONICLE — June 28 — Supernova2006 was produced in concert with the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of business. It brings together such luminaries as Jonathan Schwartz, CEO of Sun and Craig Newmark, of Craigslist. "There's a frenzy of startups," said Markus Frind, founder of PlentyofFish.com, a free one-man online dating service in Vancouver, British Columbia. "How many news readers do you need, or calendars?" he asked, referring to online products that many companies have bet their businesses on. Frind's online dating service faces its own array of competition. But he insisted that he is making a profit from online advertising — as proof, he has posted the image of a $900,000 check from Google on his blog — and declared "I'm probably the only company here making money."
