PlentyofFish: How One Man Beat The Big Guys

Posted on August 14, 2007

Plentyoffish_logo_2ARCAST.TV — Aug 3 — Ron Jacobs of ARCast TV, a production of the Microsoft Architecture Strategy Team, traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia to interview Markus Frind, the founder of and one-man show behind PlentyofFish.

Ron: Tell me about PlentyofFish.com.

Markus: It’s a free online dating site written in all Microsoft technologies, like ASP.NET and Windows Server.

Ron: Is it doing well?

Markus: We hit 33.5 million page views yesterday on just the site itself and about another million in the forums, so it’s probably one of the biggest sites in the world.

Ron: How’d you pull that off with just one web server and a couple of database servers?

Markus: If you break down 33 million page views a day at peak, you’re only looking at about 5-600 page views a second, which isn’t that difficult to pull off. The most important thing is RAM. The more RAM you have, the better. And as long as you keep database access fast, then you have no issues.

Ron: Most dating sites have fees, but yours is free. How does that work?

Markus: I make money off advertising. Match probably makes $3-400 million a year from subscriptions, but because I don’t have to pay any employees, I can make a decent living for myself.

Ron: Do a few ads on the side of a page really pay?

Markus: When you have 30 million page views a day, you can make money doing anything.

Ron: How do you decide which new features to add to the site?

Markus: I usually just come up with one, put it on the site, and wait to see what the user response is. If it’s great, then I improve it a bit more. If it sucks, I take it down.

Ron: What do you do about site outages?

Markus: If the site goes down, it’s only for like a minute or so. The biggest issues for me have been DNS-related ones. But it’s a free site, so people expect downtime.

Ron: How do you analyze the market without a business analyst?

Markus: I don’t need to hire a bunch of people to tell me common sense. Sometimes I go to other sites to see what they’re doing. I mean, chances are these sites with a couple hundred employees must be doing something right.

Dr Houran’s Interview With Patrick Perrine Of myPartnerPerfect

Posted on August 13, 2007

MypartnerperfectlogoONLINE DATING MAGAZINE — Aug 8 — Patrick Perrine is the President of the newly-launched gay site myPartnerPerfect.

Dr. Jim: Congratulations on your launch, Patrick. Tell us, why did it take so long for someone to establish a site that catered to gays?

Patrick: Thank you. I don't know why it has taken so long for the industry to identify this tremendous opportunity. It was partially because of the eHarmony policy and other relationship sites' lack of service to the gay segment that I founded myPartnerPerfect. For far too long the industry has neglected the gay community and their pursuit of life-partners. Instead, the dating service industry has been flooded with gay sites that only promote hook-ups and short-term encounters. I don't object to sites with that goal, but a very large segment of the gay community is looking for something deeper, that can last a lifetime. That's exactly what the myPartnerPerfect system was designed to do.

Dr. Jim: Do you think all of the recent, negative press around eHarmony is fair, or are these just cheap shots from competitors and a few dissatisfied customers?

Patrick: I think the larger issue being drawn out in the press isn't with the focus of eHarmony's services, but the underlying premise of that focus. Sites like eHarmony will always have a place in the world of online dating and relationships, but it is my hope that myPartnerPerfect can help fill the void in the market and foster many happy and healthy relationships for gay men.

Dr. Jim: What's the difference between a niche site that caters to a specific audience versus a site that is accused of being discriminatory?

Patrick: Wikipedia describes a niche market as "a focused, targetable portion (subset) of a market sector. By definition, then, a business that focuses on a niche market is addressing a need for a product or service that is not being addressed by mainstream providers." eHarmony, in my opinion, essentially started out as a niche site for marriage-oriented heterosexual Christians. Dr. Warren himself attributes much of eHarmony's success to its ties to Focus on the Family, a conservative Christian community. It was only recently that Dr. Warren and eHarmony began distancing themselves from that "niche" market as the site began growing rapidly and they began positioning themselves for the masses. myPartnerPerfect is completely forthwith about the segmented "niche" market we cater to due to the demand in the market that is not being met.

Dr. Jim: In what ways does the culture of your service and site differ significantly from large sites, like Match or Yahoo! Personals, which try to address the dating needs of everyone?

Patrick: myPartnerPerfect is an exclusively gay site that has been designed to cater to gay men. Much like any other niche site, myPartnerPerfect addresses the areas of partner selection that are not only important to our community, but unique to our community. Although there are many similarities between heterosexual and homosexual relationships, there are also many differences in partner selection. Our Partner Perfect Compatibility™ matching system was designed because of the many differences of gay partner selection in the areas of relationship styling, characteristics of partner selection, partner qualities and personalities, and above all else, cultural and sexual lifestyle considerations.

Dr. Jim: From your experience and research, are gays more interested in compatibility testing (and perhaps long-term relationships) than other groups? If so, why might this be?

Patrick: I wouldn't say that gay men are more interested or less interested in compatibility testing than the general population. I think that gay men are a very discerning population of consumers and demand the very "best of breed" of anything they patron and that's why myPartnerPerfect has developed the Partner Perfect Compatibility™ matching system.

Dr. Jim: What does a customer really get for his money at your site — what are the compelling features that can't be found elsewhere?

Patrick: In addition to the unique Partner Perfect matches presented to the user by our matching system, members can search the database with 5 different customized browsing tools (including our Deal Breaker Search, our Partner Perfect Search, and our Custom Search). We also have unique profile customization tools, a monthly gay-relationship eNewsletter, private matchmaking services, anonymous phone calling, our myProfilePartner™ personal profile advice and review services, monthly socials and singles mixers, weDate!™ group dinners, and our a la carte menu to select the features that are most important to the user who is not yet ready to commit to a full Premium Membership.

Sexologist, Yvonne Fulbright – Interview

Posted on August 12, 2007

Yvonne_head_shotOPW INTERVIEW — Aug 12, 2007 — Online dating services are in the business of love, which also makes them part of the sex business. Here’s my interview with sexologist Yvonne Fulbright, author of Sex with Your Ex & 69 Other Things You Should Never Do Again, and Touch Me There! A Hands-On Guide to Your Orgasmic Hot Spots (http://www.yvonnekfulbright.com) – Mark Brooks

What is your background? How did you become a sexologist?
My interest in sexuality education started early on, as a sixth grader. I had just moved to the U.S. from Iceland and was the first girl in my class to have developed. As a result, I wound up dealing with conflicting messages – positive ones from my Icelandic mother and negative ones from my American peers’ parents.  Although my upbringing suggested that my body changing was a perfectly normal part of growing up and becoming a woman, American society, in general, made it seem as if something was wrong or dirty or perverted with a 10-year old already sporting breasts.

This discrepancy inspired me to take advantage of an opportunity I had in school to give a presentation on the female reproductive system to my sixth grade class. I did it to educate and empower and, of course, learn more about what was going on with me. The day I captured my classmates’ attention, I just knew at that point that I had found some sort of calling and passion. Nothing moves an audience like sex, and I learned that when I was eleven years old.

Later on, I completed an undergraduate major of psychology and sociology, with psychology seemingly the one way to study sex at the college level. I then went to the University of Pennsylvania for a Master’s in Human Sexuality Education. I took a couple of years off to work at the American Medical Students Association and to get some public health experience, before going on to New York University for a Ph.D. Because the master’s degree in sex education was not being warmly received by most employers, I thought that going for a Ph.D. in International Community Health Education, with a sexual health focus would allow me to be more marketable, but at the same time stay true to my sexual education interest.

What role does sexuality play in short-term versus long-term compatibility?
In the short term, from kissing to sex, sexual expression really tells you a lot about someone. For instance, you can quickly tell if your partner is selfish and only into his/her own gratification, or if he or she is a giver, making sure that you’re satisfied and that the whole experience isto be a pleasurable one. Also in the short term, there’s a sexual chemistry specifically. A lot of times I get asked the question, “I like this person, but there’s no chemistry. What should I do?” I would say in the majority of cases, the chemistry does not come with time. It tends to be pretty immediate. Because of how Mother Nature made us, we tend to know earlier rather than later whether somebody is going to be sexually attractive to us.

With that said, it’s also the sexual chemistry that is going to make for the intrigue that will make for the long-term compatibility. Sex might make you hold on longer even when a relationship isn’t going well. It’s that powerful of a force.

How good of a job are online dating sites doing in educating their customers about sexuality issues?
I think at least a couple of the sites are getting better. Whether it’s due to public demand or social responsibility, more sites are using established resources in the field. They are incorporating expert sexologists, versus self-proclaimed ones, and attracting editors from the sex ed business. This latter turning point is especially huge because an editor without legitimate knowledge about sexuality doesn’t have the sexual savvy to really be in charge of the content, to know whether it’s right or wrong or even if it’s appropriate or not. Oftentimes, this lack of education can lead to a reinforcement of stereotypes and misconceptions, like those along the lines of Mars/Venus. It’s still a favorite topic, but because of recent efforts, I don’t think it’s as bad as it used to be.

I also think the dating sites are doing a better job of finding a balance between PG and R-rated content. They’re recognizing that we are sexual adult beings and need content that’s sexy and realistic.

How can online dating sites address and handle sexuality while maintaining credibility and class in their advertising?
They need to acknowledge sexuality without exploiting it in the content. When you promote sex as the reason to meet people, you’re objectifying your clients and pretty much throwing out any chance of them treating each other with great respectability. Some of the sites, like True, advocate looking beyond a person’s looks, but then use women who basically look like Hooters girls in their ads. Sex certainly sells, but it only sells to certain people. Again, know who you want to attract. Sites like these may wind up having more males sign up, but a lot of the females will be turned off by a site that appears to be full of women who don’t look like them. In attracting some customers, these sites may end up losing others.

In this society, we certainly sexualize the females more than the males. But there’s a way to have visual be erotic and sensual without necessarily being sexual. When sites push sex too much, I actually think it comes off cheesy.

What reliable sex education resources are available to consumers online?
I would recommend sexualhealth.com. It has been around for at least a decade, was established by a couple of sexologists, and has sex experts on the panel. Loveandhealth.ifriends.net has a lot of good articles and a great Q&A section. It, too, is written by experts. I also like goaskalice.com, which is based out of Columbia University’s health center. It is really good, has a whole bank of information, and is geared more towards younger people.

Mark Brooks: Some dating services are putting up little street signs to drive traffic. They cost $2-3 each and…just don't get caught putting them out at 3am!
