Inside Dating-App Bumble’s Bid For Global Domination
VOGUE – Apr 18 – Bumble began as a dating app with a simple concept: Give women the agency to dictate their own relationships and overturn the dynamics of online courtship by letting them make the first move. The app, which now includes BumbleBFF and BumbleBizz, claims ~50M users, and adds half a million more every week. Bumble is profitable, in the range of $200M in revenue last year. The app is active in 150 countries, but the company has been especially focused of late on India. Bumble has plans to open physical meet-up spaces, start producing Netflix-style content, even introduce a beauty line – all of this while weighing a public offering (an IPO would make Wolfe Herd the youngest female CEO of a publicly traded company).
Apps Like Bumble Offer A Way Forward for Print Magazines
FORBES – Apr 10 – The rapid decline of print was hard to watch. Now tech brands have repurposed print magazines as their own branded marketing channels. They're not just placing the ads, they're running the actual publications. A lifestyle magazine is an effective way for a startup to communicate its values and weave itself into the physical world. Uber, Facebook and Airbnb are just a few of the big tech companies that have given print a shot. Dating app Bumble announced its print magazine last week.
Bumble Is Getting Into Publishing Business
ADWEEK – Apr 5 – Bumble is launching Bumble Mag, a lifestyle publication, in partnership with Hearst Magazines' branded content studio, HearstMade. The first issue will be available Friday and feature entrepreneur, model and Bumble user Lauren Chan on its cover. The editorial team plans to include actual users of the app throughout the magazine to expand the brand and connect with users offline, said Clare O'Connor, Bumble's editorial director. The 100-page debut issue will include sections familiar to Bumble users: "You First," "You + BFFs," "You + Dating" and "You + Bizz." The magazine features celebrity interviews, product guides and features on hot topics with contributions from Serena Williams, Bumble creative directors Erin and Sara Foster, and Away co-founder Jen Rubio.
Badoo, Owner of Bumble, Pays Women 33% Less Than Men
BLOOMBERG – Apr 4 – One year after U.K.-based businesses were forced to report their gender pay gap, there has been some change from tech companies, but not all of it in the right direction. Facebook is now paying female staff less on average, but has hired more women in senior positions. Amazon.com, which still employs about the same number of men and women in top jobs, has improved the gap in average pay, while Uber and WeWork both revealed a sizable pay gaps. Dating app maker Badoo, which also operates the female-focused Bumble service, pays women 33% less than men, and women occupy 14% of top jobs at the company.
Whitney Wolfe Testifies in Favor of Digital Sexual Harassment Bill
STATESMAN – Mar 26 – Whitney Wolfe Herd, founder and CEO of Austin-based Bumble, urged a panel of lawmakers on Monday to support a measure that would criminalize the sending of unsolicited nude or sexual photos. Executives of Bumble worked with Rep. Morgan Meyer, R-Dallas, to file House Bill 2789 earlier this month. The effort marked the company's first time lobbying for legislation at the statewide level, a Bumble spokeswoman said. The measure would make it a Class C misdemeanor – punishable by a fine up to $500 – to send a lewd photo without the consent of the recipient. The bill includes content sent via text message, social media or online dating apps.
Bumble Eager to Fund More Women Entrepreneurs
BIZWOMEN – Mar 30 – Bumble is accepting applications from startups seeking capital from its investment fund. Investments range from $5K – $250K. Bumble has invested in four more companies, including Houston-based Alice, which uses artificial intelligence to help entrepreneurs grow their businesses and acts as a virtual startup accelerator.
Bumble to Host 2nd Annual March Madness, Beer Pong Party
PATCH.COM – Mar 26 – Bumble has scheduled its 2nd annual March Madness Watch Party + Beer Pong Tournament for Saturday, March 30, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Parlor & Yard, 601 W 6th St. March Madness games will be on display throughout the place. A mini Pong tournament consisting of eight teams between 2 tables will take place, with the winners of each table playing in the championship for a prize pack courtesy of Bumble.

PCMAG – Mar 25 – PCMag surveyed dating-app preferences across the US. Tinder was the most popular, winning 27 states. Match was the most popular in 17 states, and Bumble came in third. PCMag has surveyed ~2K US consumers.
