Inside Dating-App Bumble’s Bid For Global Domination

Posted on April 21, 2019

Bumble logo whiteVOGUE – Apr 18 – Bumble began as a dating app with a simple concept: Give women the agency to dictate their own relationships and overturn the dynamics of online courtship by letting them make the first move. The app, which now includes BumbleBFF and BumbleBizz, claims ~50M users, and adds half a million more every week. Bumble is profitable, in the range of $200M in revenue last year. The app is active in 150 countries, but the company has been especially focused of late on India. Bumble has plans to open physical meet-up spaces, start producing Netflix-style content, even introduce a beauty line – all of this while weighing a public offering (an IPO would make Wolfe Herd the youngest female CEO of a publicly traded company).

Posted on April 10, 2019

Bumble mag1FORBES – Apr 10 – The rapid decline of print was hard to watch. Now tech brands have repurposed print magazines as their own branded marketing channels. They're not just placing the ads, they're running the actual publications. A lifestyle magazine is an effective way for a startup to communicate its values and weave itself into the physical world. Uber, Facebook and Airbnb are just a few of the big tech companies that have given print a shot. Dating app Bumble announced its print magazine last week.

Bumble whitney wolfe nov 2018STATESMAN – Mar 26 – Whitney Wolfe Herd, founder and CEO of Austin-based Bumble, urged a panel of lawmakers on Monday to support a measure that would criminalize the sending of unsolicited nude or sexual photos. Executives of Bumble worked with Rep. Morgan Meyer, R-Dallas, to file House Bill 2789 earlier this month. The effort marked the company's first time lobbying for legislation at the statewide level, a Bumble spokeswoman said. The measure would make it a Class C misdemeanor – punishable by a fine up to $500 – to send a lewd photo without the consent of the recipient. The bill includes content sent via text message, social media or online dating apps.
